Protective effect of total flavonoids of Engelhardia roxburghiana Wall. leaves against radiation-induced intestinal injury in mice and its mechanism.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Irradiation-induced intestinal injury (RIII) often occurs during radiotherapy in patients, which would result in abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and even death. Engelhardia roxburghiana Wall. leaves, a traditional Chinese herb, has unique anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor, antioxidant, and analgesic effects, is used to treat damp-heat diarrhea, hernia, and abdominal pain, and has the potential to protect against RIII. AIM OF THE STUDY: To explore the protective effects of the total flavonoids of Engelhardia roxburghiana Wall. leaves (TFERL) on RIII and

Biokinetics, dosimetry, and radiation risk in infants after 99mTc-MAG3 scans.

BACKGROUND: Renal scans are among the most frequent exams performed on infants and toddlers. Due to the young age, this patient group can be classified as a high-risk group with a higher probability for developing stochastic radiation effects compared to adults. As there are only limited data on biokinetics and dosimetry in this patient group, the aim of this study was to reassess the dosimetry and the associated radiation risk for infants undergoing 99mTc-MAG3 renal scans based on a retrospective analysis of existing patient data. Consecutive data were collected from 20 patients younger than

Prevalence of thyroid nodules in an occupationally radiation exposed group: a cross sectional study in an area with mild iodine deficiency.

BACKGROUND: Thyroid nodules and thyroid cancer occur more frequently in people exposed to radiation for therapeutic purposes, and to nuclear fallout. Furthermore, it is known that a moderate degree of iodine deficiency may be responsible for an increased prevalence of thyroid nodules, while it is suspected that radiation exposure could induce changes in thyroid autoimmunity. The iodine intake of people resident in Bari, S. Italy, is mildly deficient, which could be presumed to cause a higher prevalence of thyroid pathology. This study was conducted to evaluate the prevalence of thyroid nodules

Intraoral manganese superoxide dismutase-plasmid/liposome (MnSOD-PL) radioprotective gene therapy decreases ionizing irradiation-induced murine mucosal cell cycling and apoptosis.

BACKGROUND: Single or multiple intraoral administrations of manganese superoxide dismutase-plasmid/liposomes (MnSOD-PL) to C3H/HeNHsd mice receiving single fraction or fractionated ionizing irradiation to the head and neck region have been shown to significantly decrease mucosal ulceration, weight loss and to improve survival. MATERIALS AND METHODS: To elucidate the mechanism of irradiation protection by MnSOD-PL and explore possible additive or synergistic protective effects with Amifostine (WR2721), mice received a single fraction of 19, 22.5, 25 or 30 Gy, or 24 fractions of 3 Gy irradiatio

Activated forms of H-RAS and K-RAS differentially regulate membrane association of PI3K, PDK-1, and AKT and the effect of therapeutic kinase inhibitors on cell survival.

The abilities of mutated active RAS proteins to modulate cell survival following exposure to ionizing radiation and small molecule kinase inhibitors were examined. Homologous recombination in HCT116 cells to delete the single allele of K-RAS D13 resulted in a cell line that exhibited an approximately 75% reduction in basal extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2, AKT, and c-jun-NH2-kinase 1/2 activity. Transfection of cells lacking K-RAS D13 with H-RAS V12 restored extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2 and AKT activity to basal levels but did not restore c-jun-NH2-kinase 1/2 phosphorylat

The effects of radiofrequency fields on cell proliferation are non-thermal.

The number of reports on the effects induced by radiofrequency (RF) electromagnetic fields and microwave (MW) radiation in various cellular systems is still increasing. Until now no satisfactory mechanism has been proposed to explain the biological effects of these fields. One of the current theories is that heat generation by RF/MW is the cause, in spite of the fact that a great number of studies under isothermal conditions have reported significant cellular changes after exposure to RF/MW. Therefore, this study was undertaken to investigate which effect MW radiation from these fields in comb

The use of recombinant DNA techniques to study radiation-induced damage, repair and genetic change in mammalian cells.

A brief Introduction is given to appropriate elements of recombinant DNA techniques and applications to problems in radiobiology are reviewed with illustrative detail. Examples are included of studies with both 254 nm ultraviolet light (u.v.) and ionizing radiation (i.r.) and the review progresses from the molecular analysis of DNA damage in vitro through to the nature of consequent cellular responses. The section on the Molecular distribution of DNA damage (section 2) focuses on the use of defined DNA molecules to assess the nature, sites and frequency of radiation damage. Recombinant DNA tec

Estimation of Effective Dose Received by Caregivers During [18F]FDG PET/CT Studies.

Caregivers who assist patients during [18F]FDG PET/CT are exposed to ionizing radiation, particularly when close physical support is required. Limited real-world data are available about the actual doses received by caregivers during routine clinical practice. This study aimed to estimate effective doses received by caregivers and determine whether exposures remained below the 1-mSv dose constraint recommended by the Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency for caregivers during diagnostic procedures, consistent with International Commission on Radiological Protection recommen

From Modified Haller Index to a Novel Patented Anatomical Measurement Device: Engineering Development, Validation, and Clinical Applications of Non-Invasive Thoracic Morphometry.

Thoracic morphology is increasingly recognized as an important determinant of cardiopulmonary phenotype, influencing cardiovascular mechanics, respiratory physiology, and the interpretation of diagnostic imaging findings. Although the radiological Haller Index (HI) remains the reference standard for quantifying pectus excavatum severity, its dependence on computed tomography and ionizing radiation limits widespread clinical implementation, particularly in settings requiring serial evaluations. To overcome these limitations, the Modified Haller Index (MHI) was developed as a simple, non-invasiv

Dose-specific transcriptional responses in thyroid tissue in mice after (131)I administration.

INTRODUCTION: In the present investigation, microarray analysis was used to monitor transcriptional activity in thyroids in mice 24 h after (131)I exposure. The aims of this study were to 1) assess the transcriptional patterns associated with (131)I exposure in normal mouse thyroid tissue and 2) propose biomarkers for (131)I exposure of the thyroid. METHODS: Adult BALB/c nude mice were i.v. injected with 13, 130 or 260 kBq of (131)I and killed 24h after injection (absorbed dose to thyroid: 0.85, 8.5, or 17 Gy). Mock-treated mice were used as controls. Total RNA was extracted from thyroids and

Gamma-ray-induced cell killing and chromosome abnormalities in the bone marrow of p53-deficient mice.

Resistance to the lethal effects of ionizing radiation has been demonstrated in a wide variety of cell types with defects in the p53 gene (thymocytes, splenic B and T cells, in vitro hemopoietic colony-forming cells and intestinal cells of the mouse, embryo cells of the rat, and human Burkitt's lymphoma cells). In contrast, Slichenmeyer et al. (Cancer Res. 53, 4164-4167, 1993) found no evidence of resistance in fibroblasts derived from p53 null mice. The aim of our study was to compare the radiation response of hemopoietic colony-forming cells (in vitro CFC) and of fibroblastoid colony-forming

Medical diagnostic x rays and thyroid cancer.

BACKGROUND: Diagnostic x rays are the largest man-made source of exposure to ionizing radiation for the general population. Whether there are meaningful cancer risks associated with such exposures is unclear. Most previous case-control studies have relied on recalled histories of x rays, and there is concern that completeness and accuracy of recall might differ between cancer case and control subjects. PURPOSE: The present study used information recorded prospectively in hospital charts to address the relationship between medical diagnostic x rays and risk of thyroid cancer. METHODS: The Swe

Fetal death and congenital malformation in babies born to nuclear industry employees: report from the nuclear industry family study.

BACKGROUND: There is some concern about the genetic effects of exposure to low-level ionising radiation, but the evidence is sparse and conflicting. Most work has concentrated on cancer in offspring and little has been done on adverse reproductive outcome. We aimed to assess whether the offspring of men and women who are occupationally exposed to ionising radiation are at increased risk of fetal death and congenital malformation. METHODS: We analysed pregnancies reported by an occupational cohort of nuclear industry workers in the UK, employed at establishments operated by the Atomic Energy A

Non-fluoroscopic navigation systems for radiofrequency catheter ablation for supraventricular tachycardia reduce ionising radiation exposure.

INTRODUCTION: The use of non-fluoroscopic systems (NFS) to guide radiofrequency catheter ablation (RFCA) for the treatment of supraventricular tachycardia (SVT) is associated with lower radiation exposure. This study aimed to determine if NFS reduces fluoroscopy time, radiation dose and procedure time. METHODS: We prospectively enrolled patients undergoing RFCA for SVT. NFS included EnSiteTM NavXTM or CARTO® mapping. We compared procedure and fluoroscopy times, and radiation exposure between NFS and conventional fluoroscopy (CF) cohorts. Procedural success, complications and one-year success

[Radiation-induced tumors of the nervous system in man].

The risk of developing a tumor of the nervous system in humans is analysed in several studies of populations, exposed to ionising radiation for medical reasons, or exposed to military or occupational radiation. The main data come from series of patients who underwent radiotherapy during childhood: a high incidence of tumors of the nervous system is found after irradiation of one to a few grays as treatment of a benign disease (especially tinea capitis), as well as after irradiation at higher doses of a few tens of grays for the treatment of cancer (in particular cerebral irradiation in acute l

Effects of Tumor-like assay conditions, lonizing radiation, and hyperthermia on immune lysis of tumor cells by cytotoxic T-lymphocytes.

Cytotoxic T-lymphocytes (CTL's) harvested from mixed splenic lymphocyte cultures (DBA/2 + C57BL) were tested for their ability to lyse allogeneic P815 mastocytoma cells under various tumor-like assay conditions, with or without previous exposure to ionizing radiation or hyperthermia (43 degrees). There was little or no decrease of immune cytolysis when CTL's were assayed by 51Cr release under tumor-like conditions (plateau-phase target cells, low pH, or anoxia) or after irradiation, but cytolytic activity was greatly reduced when CTL's were exposed to heat; 45 min of hyperthermic treatment dec

Tracking ultrafast non-adiabatic dissociation dynamics of the deuterated water dication molecule.

We applied reaction microscopy to elucidate fast non-adiabatic dissociation dynamics of deuterated water molecules after direct photo-double ionization at 61 eV with synchrotron radiation. For the very rare D+ + O+ + D breakup channel, the particle momenta, angular, and energy distributions of electrons and ions, measured in coincidence, reveal distinct electronic dication states and their dissociation pathways via spin-orbit coupling and charge transfer at crossings and seams on the potential energy surfaces. Notably, we could distinguish between direct and fast sequential dissociation scenar
