OBJECTIVE: Nasal obstruction is considered to be one of the risk factors for obstructive sleep apnea, together with a high arched narrow palate, elongated uvula, malocclusion, and tongue and tonsil size. The impact of nasal obstruction on sleep apnea is controversial, however, and its relation to sleep quality is rarely discussed. The purpose of this study was to investigate the independent effect of nasal obstruction on sleep quality.
METHODS: Sixty-nine patients with nasal obstructive symptoms and without sleep apnea episodes were enrolled from September 2018 to August 2019, and compared be

Purpose Previous research has identified seizures, intellectual disability, learning disability, pervasive developmental disorder, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder as coexisting disabilities frequently seen in children who stutter (CWS). The observation that those conditions are affected by sleep has incited the present study, which aimed to explore if sleep problems are also more frequent in CWS. Method Data was obtained from the 2012 National Health Interview Survey. Children included in the analysis were those whose caregivers answered definitively whether or not the sample chil

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a chronic progressive neurodegenerative disease, closely associated with aging. It is considered incurable due to both late diagnosis and symptomatic treatment, which is able to alter neither molecular mechanisms of sleep disruption nor the neurodegenerative processes, developing with aging and PD progression. In the present study, we assess the therapeutic potential of a novel chaperone inducer U-133 (acetyl 2,3,7-tris-O-glucoside echinochrome) in the preclinical stage of PD modelled in aged rats by the inhibition of the proteasomal system in the brain. U-133 is a

BACKGROUND: Sleep disturbance is common after a mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) in children, yet its biology is poorly understood. We aimed to explore sleep-related problems (SRPs), sleep-activity patterns, and endogenous melatonin production in children with different recovery trajectories following mTBI. We hypothesized that children with delayed recovery would have more SRPs and abnormal sleep-activity patterns, which would correlate with lower overnight melatonin production.
METHODS: In this prospective controlled cohort study, we enrolled 83 children with persistent symptoms, 26 child

Sleep quality varies widely across individuals, especially during normal aging, with impaired sleep contributing to deficits in cognition and emotional regulation. Sleep can also be impacted by a variety of adverse events, including childhood adversity. Here we examined how early life adverse events impacted later life sleep structure and physiology using an animal model to test the relationship between early life adversity and sleep quality across the life span. Rat pups were exposed to an Adversity-Scarcity model from postnatal day 8-12, where insufficient bedding for nest building induces m

BACKGROUND: There is a need for rigorous measures of sleep in children with Down syndrome as sleep is a substantial problem in this population and there are barriers to obtaining the gold standard polysomnography (PSG). PSG is cost-prohibitive when measuring treatment effects in some clinical trials, and children with Down syndrome may not cooperate with undergoing a PSG. Minimal information is available on the validity of alternative methods of assessing sleep in children with Down syndrome, such as actigraphy and parent ratings. Our study examined the concurrent and convergent validity of di

Previous research found an association between sleep disturbances and cognitive deficits on the one hand, and between increased cortisol levels and poor cognitive performance on the other hand. We hypothesized that cortisol may, at least partially, mediate the link between sleep disturbances and cognitive impairment (CI). We analyzed data from 440 nondemented subjects aged ≥65 years (72.4 ± 4.5 years old, 55.7% women) participating at the population-based CoLaus/PsyCoLaus study, who underwent cognitive evaluation, complete polysomnography and cortisol measures during the day. Subjects with CI

Multiple system atrophy is a progressive neurodegenerative disease characterized by the association of autonomic failure and a movement disorder that consist of either a hypokinetic movement disorder or a cerebellar syndrome or both. In addition to these core characteristics other movement disorders (e.g. dystonia, myoclonus, spasticity), and neuropsychiatric symptoms (e.g. depression, cognitive dysfunction) may occur in the course of the disease and can severely impair patients' quality of live. To date no causal therapy is available and therefore symptomatic treatment plays a pivotal role in

In a French prison, most inmates reported not being satisfied with their sleep. Life habits between good and bad sleepers were not significantly different except for television and smoking. The most frequently reported symptom of insomnia was several awakenings at night, and the most frequently cited etiologies were rumination of thoughts and noise. Most patients reported that their sleeping problems began or worsened after incarceration. A quarter of the inmates were following a hypnotic treatment, and most of these treatments began in prison. Only 42% of patients were satisfied with its effe

Efavirenz is part of the first-line treatment for HIV patients including those in South Africa with approximately 50% experiencing neuropsychiatric side effects. A systematic review of papers reporting neuropsychiatric side effects with efavirenz published between January 2001 and December 2014 was performed, to provide guidance. 13 articles were reviewed. Patient ages ranged between 37 to 41 years, with a high percentage males. Scales used to measure incidence and severity of side effects were varied; with disease severity or stage not reported. Patients with psychoses were excluded. Most com

INTRODUCTION: Previous studies of patients with end-stage renal disease have examined the role of fluid shifts on apnea-hypopnea episodes, but the association between volume overload and patient-reported sleep quality or duration has not been well-established.
METHODS: We studied the association between predialysis bioimpedance spectroscopy-derived volume estimates and self-reported sleep quality and duration in 638 patients in the United States Renal Data System ACTIVE/ADIPOSE study receiving hemodialysis from 2009 to 2011. We used questionnaires to assess self-reported sleep duration and qu

Prazosin is increasingly being used off-label to treat nightmares in patients with posttraumatic stress disorder. The literature about the psychiatric adverse effects of prazosin is very limited. We present a case in which low-dose prazosin was associated with nightmares and sleep disturbances in an elderly patient without previously diagnosed mental illness or coexisting environmental risk factors for nightmares. Insomnia and hallucinations are listed as some of the rare side effects of prazosin by the manufacturer. Prazosin could be associated with rare psychiatric adverse effects and sleep

Fibromyalgia is characterized by chronic widespread pain, fatigue and nonrestorative sleep. Polysomnography showed reduced short-wave sleep and abnormal alpha rhythms during nonrapid eye movement sleep in patients with fibromyalgia. However, sleep dysfunction might be pathogenic in fibromyalgia since myalgia and fatigue could be induced in healthy individuals by disrupting sleep. Poor sleep quality was a major risk factor for the subsequent development of chronic widespread pain in healthy pain-free individuals. Sleep disruption leads to impairment of the descending pain inhibition pathways. A

BACKGROUND: Sleep deficiency is a major public health problem. There are limited human data on whether sleep duration or disruption are risk factors for prostate cancer.
METHODS: We prospectively followed 32,141 men in the Health Professionals Follow-Up Study who reported their typical sleep duration in 1987, 2000, and 2008. We identified 4,261 incident prostate cancer cases, including 563 lethal cases through 2010. Sleep disruption was assessed in 2004 among 19,639 men, with 930 prostate cancer cases (50 lethal) identified from 2004 to 2010. Cox proportional hazards models were used to evalu
