Oto-traumatic effects of computer simulated magnetic coil impulse noise: analysis of mechanisms.

The brief impulse noise artifacts of 1.0 ms or less generated by some magnetic coils used in extracranial magnetic stimulation may induce acoustic trauma. We investigated the effects of these magnetic coil acoustic artifacts (MCAA) on the inner ear by exposing rabbits to computer stimulated impulse noise designed to mimic the impulse noise of the coil in spectrum and acoustic energy. The simulated impulse noise stimuli (50 impulses) were varied in maximum peak sound pressure (160, 157, and 155 dB re: 20 muPascal), rise-time (100 microseconds and 1,000 microseconds) and duration. The frequency

Contralateral auditory stimulation and otoacoustic emissions: a review of basic data in humans.

The influence of contralateral auditory stimulation on otoacoustic emissions (OAE), spontaneous OAE, evoked OAE and acoustic distortion products, can be summarized as follows: (1) alteration (mainly a decrease) of OAE amplitude; (2) alteration of response spectrum (upward shift frequency of SOAE); (3) alteration of phase; (4) effect dependent on intensity of contralateral stimulation; (5) effect inversely dependent on intensity of ipsilateral stimulation; (6) frequency specificity of the suppressive effect. Involvement of the medial olivocochlear bundle is highly probable but one cannot exclud

[Brain stem auditory evoked potentials in tumors of the posterior parts of the 3d ventricle and pineal gland].

Dynamic studies (one to six times) of stem generated potentials (SGP) to acoustic stimulation were conducted in 32 patients with tumors of the posterior parts of the third ventricle and the pineal gland. In tumors of this localization, the SGP underwent pathological changes in 90% of cases: the response latency increased, its amplitude reduced more or less coarsely (even to complete abaissement of the peaks), and the time intervals between the peaks increased. Dynamic studies of SGP to acoustic stimulation may help the surgeon in making the diagnosis and prove valuable in appraising the functi

Grafting and electrical stimulation of the auditory nerve in cats.

The effect of implanting wire electrodes into the cochlea is limited by the deficit of nerve fibers in most diseases of the cochlea. Therefore, in a series of experiments it was tried, for the first time, to direct new outspreading nerve fibres into the afferent acoustic nerve by grafting a motor nerve to it. A second series of experiments should demonstrate the possibility of direct electrical stimulation of the eighs nerve by implanting wire electrodes via the transoccipital approach. The electrically evoked potentials, recorded at the auditory cortex, were compaired to potentials evoked by

Ontogenetic shifts in sound production and shared sonic mechanisms in two priacanthid fishes.

Sound production in teleost fishes relies on diverse anatomical adaptations, yet convergent mechanisms involving extrinsic sonic muscles acting on the swim bladder are widespread. This study investigates the acoustic and morphological features of two priacanthid species, Indo-Pacific glasseye Heteropriacanthus carolinus and moontail bullseye Priacanthus hamrur to explore interspecific similarities in sound production. Using recordings and anatomical analyses, we show that both species rely on a forced-response mechanism, where the contraction rate of fast sonic muscles determines the fundament

Neural-linguistic analysis for Alzheimer's detection: A deep learning approach informed by cognitive neuroscience.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that disrupts cognitive function across multiple domains, particularly affecting language networks and speech production pathways in the brain. Patients demonstrate symptoms including aphasia, reduced syntactic complexity, and diminished verbal fluency that reflects underlying neural pathology in language-related cortical areas. Current detection methods rely on resource-intensive neuroimaging, invasive biomarker sampling, and extensive neuropsychological testing, creating substantial barriers to early diagnosis. While resear

Neurophysiological Contributions to Dysphonia: The Role of Cortical Silent Periods in AdLD.

OBJECTIVE: Adductor laryngeal dystonia (AdLD) is a task-specific focal dystonia characterized by involuntary vocal fold hyperadduction and impaired voice quality. While reduced cortical inhibition is a hallmark of AdLD, its relationship to acoustic measures of voice dysfunction remains unclear. This study investigated whether intracortical inhibition, as measured by the cortical silent period (cSP) from the laryngeal motor cortex (LMC), is associated with cepstral peak prominence (CPP), a quantitative acoustic marker of voice harmonic periodicity. METHODS: Thirty-two participants (17 AdLD, 15

Possible predictors of apneic-events during sleep: advanced snoring sound analysis.

PURPOSE: Snoring is the most common symptom in patients experiencing obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and is reported by up to 94% of those affected. It has already been extensively proven that snoring of patients with OSA acoustically differs significantly from habitual snoring. For this study, snoring in patients with OSA is analyzed by its different components: pitch, formants (F1-F3), formant-ratio F2/F1, harmonic-noise-ratio (HNR), spectral energy ratio (SER). The objective of this study is to determine whether one or more acoustic parameters exhibit significant alterations or distinctive fe

The shaky voice of aging localized to the larynx: dissociation of frequency and amplitude tremor.

Aging is associated with structural and functional changes of the vocal folds that may result in presbyphonia, often perceived as a weak or shaky voice. However, the quantitative characterization of underlying age-related vocal tremor across the adult lifespan remains limited. This cross-sectional study investigated the characteristics of vocal tremor across the adult lifespan using automated acoustic analysis. A total of 291 native speakers aged 18-94 years were recruited and underwent perceptual voice evaluation and acoustic analysis during sustained phonation of the vowel /a/. Vocal tremor

Vocal Fold Onset and Its Effect on the Spectral Envelope.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to examine the acoustic implications of using aspirated, well-coordinated, coup de la glotte, and hard glottal onset methods, in order to compare and contrast the radiated acoustic spectra. A numeric classification system is introduced to reduce terminological confusion. METHOD: Singers trained in bel canto singing style were asked to sing 5-second samples on 3 predetermined pitches comprising the low, middle, and high range in male and female voices. Each participant was instructed and trained to sing the three pitches with four difference onset types.

Noise barriers as a mitigation measure for highway traffic noise: Empirical evidence from three study cases.

Noise barriers are path interventions between noise sources and human receivers used mainly along road corridors to improve the acoustic environment for affected residents. Despite their widespread use, the impact of these interventions on community perception is still insufficiently investigated. This paper presents findings from a longitudinal study evaluating the efficacy of noise barriers in three residential areas alongside highways, compared to a reference case in a relatively quiet area. Noise exposure was objectively quantified via acoustic measurements and noise modelling, while socio

Cortical tracking of formant modulations derived from silently presented lip movements and its decline with age.

The integration of visual and auditory cues is crucial for successful processing of speech, especially under adverse conditions. Recent reports have shown that when participants watch muted videos of speakers, the phonological information about the acoustic speech envelope, which is associated with but independent from the speakers' lip movements, is tracked by the visual cortex. However, the speech signal also carries richer acoustic details, for example, about the fundamental frequency and the resonant frequencies, whose visuophonological transformation could aid speech processing. Here, we

Microvascular decompression for typical trigeminal neuralgia: Personal experience with intraoperative neuromonitoring with level-specific-CE-Chirp® brainstem auditory evoked potentials in preventing possible hearing loss.

BACKGROUND: Permanent hearing loss after posterior fossa microvascular decompression (MVD) for typical trigeminal neuralgia (TTN) is one of the possible complications of this procedure. Intraoperative brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs) are used for monitoring the function of cochlear nerve during cerebellopontine angle (CPA) microsurgery. Level-specific (LS)-CE-Chirp® BAEPs are the most recent evolution of classical click BAEP, performed both in clinical studies and during intraoperative neuromonitoring (IONM) of acoustic pathways during several neurosurgical procedures. Characterization of copulatory courtship song in the Old World sand fly species Phlebotomus argentipes.

Acoustic communication in the form of courtship and mating songs are often involved in reproductive isolation between species of Diptera, such as Drosophila, mosquitoes and sand flies. The patterns of courtship songs in New World sand fly species evolve quickly under sexual selection; and therefore, represent an important trait that can be used as a marker to study the evolution of species complexes and may aid identification of sibling species with a complex. The ability to identify vector species within species complexes is of critical importance for effective and efficient vector control pr

Using Crowdsourced Listeners' Ratings to Measure Speech Changes in Hypokinetic Dysarthria: A Proof-of-Concept Study.

Purpose Interventions for speech disorders aim to produce changes that are not only acoustically measurable or perceptible to trained professionals but are also apparent to naive listeners. Due to challenges associated with obtaining ratings from suitably large listener samples, however, few studies currently evaluate speech interventions by this criterion. Online crowdsourcing technologies could enhance the measurement of intervention effects by making it easier to obtain real-world listeners' ratings. Method Stimuli, drawn from a published study by Sapir et al. ("Effects of intensive voice t

Pitch as the Main Determiner of Italian Lexical Stress Perception Across the Lifespan: Evidence From Typical Development and Dyslexia.

The study deals with the issue of lexical stress perception in both a developmental (comparing children and adults with typical development) and a clinical perspective (comparing typically developing children and children with dyslexia). The three parameters characterizing the acoustic profiles of words and non-words in a certain language are duration, pitch and intensity of its syllables. Based on (sparse) previous literature on Italian and other European languages, it was expected that syllable duration would be the parameter predominantly determining the perception of stress position. It wa
