Larvicidal, antioxidant and biotoxicity assessment of (2-(((2-ethyl-2 methylhexyl)oxy)carbonyl)benzoic acid isolated from Bacillus pumilus against Aedes aegypti, Anopheles stephensi and Culex quinquefasciatus.

Mosquitoes are a vector for many dreadful diseases known for their public health concern. The continued use of synthetic insecticides against vector control has led to serious environmental impacts, human health problems, and the development of insect resistance. Hence, alternative mosquito control methods are needed to protect the environment and human health. In the present study, the bioefficacy of (2-(((2-ethyl-2 methylhexyl)oxy)carbonyl) benzoic acid isolated from Bacillus pumilus were tested against Aedes aegypti, Culex quinquefasciatus and Anopheles stephensi. The isolated bioactive com…

Effect of Early Bacillus Calmette-Guerin Vaccination of Pediatric Severe Combined Immunodeficiency Patients on the Outcome of Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation Using a Reduced-Intensity Conditioning Regimen.

The eminence of Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) vaccine in newborn vaccination programs has been conspicuous throughout the years, especially in low-income developing countries where tuberculosis is prevalent; however, application of the BCG vaccine is not without constraints, especially in patients afflicted with immunodeficiency diseases, such as severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID). The present study aimed to evaluate whether the administration of BCG vaccine at birth could improve the outcomes of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) in pediatric patients with SCID. In this stud…

A missed opportunity: birth registration coverage is lagging behind Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) immunization coverage and maternal health services utilization in low- and lower middle-income countries.

BACKGROUND: Civil registration and vital statistics (CRVS) systems lay the foundation for good governance by increasing the effectiveness and delivery of public services, providing vital statistics for the planning and monitoring of national development, and protecting fundamental human rights. Birth registration provides legal rights and facilitates access to essential public services such as health care and education. However, more than 110 low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) have deficient CRVS systems, and national birth registration rates continue to fall behind childhood immunizatio

Pretreatment With Inactivated Bacillus Calmette-Guerin Increases CD4+CD25+ Regulatory T Cell Function and Decreases Functional and Structural Effects of Asthma Induction in a Rat Asthma Model.

Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) has been shown to have therapeutic effects on asthma through CD4+CD25+ regulatory T cells (Tregs). We sought to assess pretreatment with inactivated BCG on CD4+CD25+ Tregs and its functional and structural effects in rat asthma model. The rat asthma model was established using ovalbumin (OVA) sensitization and challenge. Ten rats were pretreated with BCG prior to OVA and received continued BCG injections during OVA challenge (BCG+OVA group), 10 rats were treated with OVA alone (OVA group), and 10 rats were treated with saline (control group). After 9 weeks, hista…

Effect of an exotoxin from Bacillus thuringiensis on deoxyribonucleic acid-dependent ribonucleic acid polymerase in nuclei from adult Sarcophaga bullata. Unusual behaviour of eukaryotic polymerases to inhibitors.

The DNA-dependent RNA polymerase activities in nuclei isolated from adult Sarcophaga bullata are unusual in their responses to metal ions, ionic strength and inhibitors. There is an activity that is sensitive both to rifamycin and to alpha-amanitin. The activity is less sensitive to Bacillus thuringiensis exotoxin than is larval polymerase, and low concentration of exotoxin provoke a slight stimulation.

Biochemical characterization of the mannojirimycin biosynthetic enzymes reveals metal ion- and pH-dependent catalysis in Bacillus atrophaeus MBLB1156 isolated from red fermented bean curd (Hong fu ru).

1-Deoxynojirimycin (DNJ) and its C2 epimer, 1-deoxymannojirimycin (DMJ), are pharmaceutically relevant iminosugars. Although the gabT1-yktc1-gutB1 gene cluster has been implicated in the biosynthesis of mannojirimycin (MJ), a common precursor of DNJ and DMJ, the coordinated biochemical properties of the pathway enzymes remain poorly understood. Here, we isolated a DMJ-producing strain, Bacillus atrophaeus MBLB1156, from Hong fu ru and identified a gabT1-yktc1-gutB1 cluster by whole-genome sequencing. Comparative genomic analysis of 99 Bacillus genomes further revealed that the cluster of MBLB1…

Bioremediation of diesel-contaminated saline soil and enhancement of microbial salinity tolerance by a biosurfactant-producing Bacillus subtilis AHV-KH11 and external surfactant application: bio-toxicity assessment.

A biosurfactant-producing isolate, Bacillus subtilis AHV-KH11, was used for the biodegradation of diesel-contaminated saline soils. In addition to naturally occurring diesel contamination, the collected soil samples were artificially contaminated with diesel oil at concentrations ranging from 1000 to 5000 mg kg- 1 of soil. The operational parameters investigated in our experiment were the initial seed volume (5-20 mL), soil moisture content (100-300%), external surfactants (rhamnolipid and Tween 80), and salinity levels (0.5-2%). The results indicated that diesel biodegradation was optimized a…

An integrated microbial genome-wide association studies-based characterization of nitric oxide homeostasis by probiotic Bacillus subtilis on aging and neurodegeneration using Caenorhabditis elegans and mouse models.

Microbial nitric oxide (NO) metabolism plays a critical role in regulating host redox homeostasis, yet its probiotic relevance remains largely unexplored. In this study, we performed a genome-wide phenotypic screen of 3984 Bacillus subtilis 168 (B. subtilis 168) gene deletion strains in Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans), identifying 12 core genetic factors linked to aging modulation. Among these, nosA (nitric oxide synthase) and yojO (putative nitric oxide reductase) were prioritized for validation based on their consistent host phenotypic effects and defined roles in NO regulation. Treatmen…
