Prolonged, Controlled Daytime versus Delayed Eating Impacts Weight and Metabolism.

A delayed eating schedule is associated with increased risk of obesity and metabolic dysfunction in humans.1-9 However, there are no prolonged, highly controlled experimental studies testing the effects of meal timing on weight and metabolism in adults with a body mass index (BMI) of 19-27 kg/m2.10-18 Twelve healthy adults (age: 26.3 ± 3.4 years; BMI: 21.9 ± 1.7 kg/m2; 5 females) participated in a randomized crossover study in free-living conditions. Three meals and two snacks with comparable energy and macronutrient contents were provided during two, 8-week, counterbalanced conditions separat

Comorbid depressive and anxiety symptoms and frailty among older adults: Findings from the West China health and aging trend study.

BACKGROUND: Depression and anxiety are two common mental disorders in older people. Studies have reported that depression is strongly associate with frailty, but few studies focus on anxiety disorder and comorbid two mental disorders. In this study, we aimed to identify associations between comorbid depressive and anxiety symptoms with frailty in older adults. METHODS: 4,103 community-dwellings adults aged 60 and older from the baseline of the West China Health and Aging Trend (WCHAT) study were included. Frailty was measured by the Fried frailty phenotype criteria. The 15-item Geriatric Depr

Sarcopenia Definitions and Outcomes Consortium (SDOC) Criteria are Strongly Associated With Malnutrition, Depression, Falls, and Fractures in High-Risk Older Persons.

OBJECTIVES: Sarcopenia Definitions and Outcomes Consortium (SDOC) provides cut-points based on muscle weakness (low grip strength) and slowness (poor gait speed) for low-risk populations; however, it is unknown if these criteria apply to high-risk populations. We examined the association between SDOC criteria and important health status indicators in high-risk older persons. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: 356 community-dwelling older persons (median age: 79 years, interquartile range: 73, 83; 75.2% women) attending a falls and fractures clinic in Melbourne, Australi

Association Between Uric Acid and N-Terminal Pro-B-Type Natriuretic Peptide in Patients With Unstable Angina Pectoris.

BACKGROUND: The association between uric acid and N-Terminal Pro-B-Type Natriuretic Peptide (NT-proBNP) in patients with unstable angina pectoris (UAP) is unclear. METHODS: We recruited 260 patients with UAP admitted to the first affiliated Hospital of Guangxi Medical University from February 2018 to August 2018. According to the level of uric acid, patients were divided into 4 groups (Q1 = 48.00-305.00 μmol/L; Q2 = 310.00-405.00 μmol/L; Q3 = 408.00-513.00 μmol/L; Q4 = 514.00-4330.00 μmol/L). The differences of NT-proBNP between groups and the relationship with cardiac function were compared.

Examining and adapting the information-motivation-behavioural skills model of medication adherence among community-dwelling older patients with multimorbidity: protocol for a cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: Multimorbidity is highly prevalent among older patients and has been shown to be associated with poor health outcomes and lower quality of life. Adherence to medication treatments is essential in order to maximise the efficacy of treatments and improve health outcomes. However, nearly half of the older patients with multimorbidity fail to adhere to their medications, which can result in an increased risk of adverse health events, lower quality of life and higher healthcare cost. Only a few studies have explored the underlying mechanism and influencing factors of medication adhere

Comparative effectiveness of direct admission and admission through emergency departments for children: a randomized stepped wedge study protocol.

BACKGROUND: Approximately 2 million children are hospitalized each year in the United States, with more than three-quarters of non-elective hospitalizations admitted through emergency departments (EDs). Direct admission, defined as admission to hospital without first receiving care in the hospital's ED, may offer benefits for patients and healthcare systems in quality, timeliness, and experience of care. While ED utilization patterns are well studied, there is a paucity of research comparing the effectiveness of direct and ED admissions. The overall aim of this project is to compare the effect

The effect of the glucosylceramide synthase inhibitor lucerastat on cardiac repolarization: results from a thorough QT study in healthy subjects.

BACKGROUND: Fabry disease is a rare inherited glycosphingolipid storage disorder caused by deleterious mutations in the GLA gene coding for the lysosomal enzyme α-galactosidase A. The glucosylceramide synthase inhibitor lucerastat is an iminosugar with potential to provide oral substrate reduction therapy in Fabry disease, regardless of the patient´s underlying mutation. Since lucerastat exhibits systemic exposure and many patients with Fabry disease suffer from rhythm and conduction abnormalities its effects on cardiac repolarization were evaluated in a thorough QT study. METHODS: In Part A

Age and time-of-day differences in the hypothalamo-pituitary-testicular, and adrenal, response to total overnight sleep deprivation.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: In young men, sleep restriction decreases testosterone (Te) and increases afternoon cortisol (F), leading to anabolic-catabolic imbalance, insulin resistance, and other andrological health consequences. Age-related differences in the hypothalamo-pituitary-testicular/adrenal response to sleep restriction could expose older individuals to greater or lesser risk. We aimed to evaluate and compare the 24-h and time-of-day effect of sleep restriction on F, luteinizing hormone (LH), and Te in young and older men. METHODS: Thirty-five healthy men, aged 18-30 (n = 17) and 60-80 (n =1

Grapefruit juice enhances the systolic blood pressure-lowering effects of dietary nitrate-containing beetroot juice.

AIMS: Dietary nitrate from sources such as beetroot juice lowers blood pressure (BP) via the nitrate-nitrite-nitric oxide (NO) pathway. However, NO and nitrite are inactivated via reoxidation to nitrate, potentially limiting their activity. Cytochrome P450-3A4 inhibition with troleandomycin prevents nitrite re-oxidation to nitrate in rodent liver. Grapefruit juice contains the CYP3A4 inhibitor furanocoumarin. We therefore hypothesized that grapefruit juice would enhance BP-lowering with beetroot juice by maintaining circulating [nitrite]. METHODS: We performed a randomized, placebo-controlled

Effects of Casein Hydrolysate Ingestion on Thermoregulatory Responses in Healthy Adults during Exercise in Heated Conditions: A Randomized Crossover Trial.

Food ingestion has been shown to affect thermoregulation during exercise, while the impact of protein degradant consumption remains unclear. We investigated the effects of casein hydrolysate ingestion on thermoregulatory responses during exercise in the heat. In a randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind, crossover trial, five men and five women consumed either 5 g of casein hydrolysate or placebo. Thirty minutes after ingestion, participants cycled at 60% VO2max until voluntary exhaustion wearing a hot-water (43 °C) circulation suit. Exercise time to exhaustion, body core temperature, for

Older People Living in Nursing Homes: An Oral Health Screening Survey in Florence, Italy.

The oral health state plays an important role in the concept of 'elderly frailty', since institutionalized older people are prone to suffering from bad oral conditions. The aim of this study is to assess the state of oral health in the older residents of nursing homes and to measure its potential association with the cognitive state, the degree of functional autonomy, and the malnutrition risk. Methods: We enrolled 176 subjects from 292 residents in five nursing homes in Florence. For each subject, we performed the Malnutrition Universal Screening Tool, the Pfeiffer test, the Minimum Data Set-

Influence of methazolamide on the human control of breathing: A comparison to acetazolamide.

NEW FINDINGS: What is the central question of this study? Acetazolamide and methazolamide both reduce hypoxic pulmonary vasoconstriction equally, but methazolamide does not impair skeletal muscle function. The effect of methazolamide on respiratory control in humans is not yet known. What is the main finding and its importance? Similar to acetazolamide after chronic oral administration, methazolamide causes a metabolic acidosis and shifts the ventilatory CO2 response curve leftwards without reducing O2 sensitivity. The change in ventilation over the change in log PO2 provides a more accurate m
