Evaluating antimicrobial prescriptions in primary health care across an entire Brazilian city through the analysis of electronic medical records: where public health and data science converge.

BACKGROUND: Exploring records from entire cities to make decisions, particularly within public health systems, remains challenging. METHODS: This study investigates the public health data of São Caetano do Sul (SCS), in Brazil, to uncover patterns of antimicrobial prescriptions for infectious diseases using electronic health system records from primary care. Data science techniques such as preprocessing, transformation, loading, and analytics were also applied to achieve this goal. RESULTS: From January to September 2023, a total of 575,616 records of medical appointments were analyzed, and

Intracranial stenosis prediction using a small set of risk factors in the Tromsø Study.

Intracranial atherosclerotic stenosis (ICAS) refers to a narrowing of intracranial arteries due to plaque buildup on the inside of the vessel walls restricting blood flow. Early detection of ICAS is crucial to prevent serious consequences such as stroke. Here we apply three different machine learning methods, such as support vector machines, multi-layer perceptrons and Kolmogorov-Arnold Networks to predict ICAS according to sparse risk factors from blood lipids and demographic data, including smoking habits, age, sex, diabetes, blood pressure lowering and cholesterol-lowering drugs and high-de

Towards a prescribing monitoring system for medication safety evaluation within electronic health records: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Medical care can fail for various reasons: diseases can remain undetected and their severity misjudged, therapies can be incorrectly dosed or ineffective, and therapies can trigger new conditions or adverse drug reactions (ADR). To manage the complexity of changing patient circumstances, data-driven techniques play an increasingly important role in monitoring patient safety and treatment success. Therefore, clinical prediction models need to consider longitudinal factors ("Prescribing Monitoring") to ensure clinically meaningful results and avoid misclassification in the dynamic he

Chaos-MLP: Chaotic Transform MLP-Like Architecture for Medical Images Multi-Label Recognition Task.

The theory of "three-stage prevention" in view of the body constitution is the key technology of modern Chinese medicine for "Preventive Treatment of Diseases". In particular, automated body constitution recognition (BCR) is an integral part of intelligent Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), which is extremely valuable for disease prevention and diagnosis. Actually, BCR is a challenging multi-label recognition task by the TCM composite constitution theory. First, two new databases are constructed, one is a multi-label facial body constitution (MFBC), and another is a multi-label tongue body co

BACKGROUND: Adherence with Anti-Retroviral Therapy (ART) reduces viral load, as well as HIV-related morbidity and mortality. Despite the expanded availability of ART, non-adherence remains a series problem, leads increased viral load, a decline CD4 cell count, and the development of drug resistance. HIV care is currently showing promise with the use of machine learning algorithms for early prediction of future non-adherence. However, as to researcher's Knowledge, there was limited research supporting this evidence in the country. Therefore, the primary aim of this study was to predict ART adhe

Machine learning-based prediction model for patients with recurrent Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia.

BACKGROUND: Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia (SAB) remains a significant contributor to both community-acquired and healthcare-associated bloodstream infections. SAB exhibits a high recurrence rate and mortality rate, leading to numerous clinical treatment challenges. Particularly, since the outbreak of COVID-19, there has been a gradual increase in SAB patients, with a growing proportion of (Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) MRSA infections. Therefore, we have constructed and validated a pediction model for recurrent SAB using machine learning. This model aids physicians in promptl

Data privacy-aware machine learning approach in pancreatic cancer diagnosis.

PROBLEM: Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is considered a highly lethal cancer due to its advanced stage diagnosis. The five-year survival rate after diagnosis is less than 10%. However, if diagnosed early, the five-year survival rate can reach up to 70%. Early diagnosis of PDAC can aid treatment and improve survival rates by taking necessary precautions. The challenge is to develop a reliable, data privacy-aware machine learning approach that can accurately diagnose pancreatic cancer with biomarkers. AIM: The study aims to diagnose a patient's pancreatic cancer while ensuring the conf

Autonomous fetal morphology scan: deep learning + clustering merger - the second pair of eyes behind the doctor.

The main cause of fetal death, of infant morbidity or mortality during childhood years is attributed to congenital anomalies. They can be detected through a fetal morphology scan. An experienced sonographer (with more than 2000 performed scans) has the detection rate of congenital anomalies around 52%. The rates go down in the case of a junior sonographer, that has the detection rate of 32.5%. One viable solution to improve these performances is to use Artificial Intelligence. The first step in a fetal morphology scan is represented by the differentiation process between the view planes of the

Interpretable CNN-Multilevel Attention Transformer for Rapid Recognition of Pneumonia From Chest X-Ray Images.

Chest imaging plays an essential role in diagnosing and predicting patients with COVID-19 with evidence of worsening respiratory status. Many deep learning-based approaches for pneumonia recognition have been developed to enable computer-aided diagnosis. However, the long training and inference time makes them inflexible, and the lack of interpretability reduces their credibility in clinical medical practice. This paper aims to develop a pneumonia recognition framework with interpretability, which can understand the complex relationship between lung features and related diseases in chest X-ray

A Dual-Branch Framework With Prior Knowledge for Precise Segmentation of Lung Nodules in Challenging CT Scans.

Lung cancer is one of the deadliest cancers globally, and early diagnosis is crucial for patient survival. Pulmonary nodules are the main manifestation of early lung cancer, usually assessed using CT scans. Nowadays, computer-aided diagnostic systems are widely used to assist physicians in disease diagnosis. The accurate segmentation of pulmonary nodules is affected by internal heterogeneity and external data factors. In order to overcome the segmentation challenges of subtle, mixed, adhesion-type, benign, and uncertain categories of nodules, a new mixed manual feature network that enhances se

Patient values in patient-provider communication about participation in early phase clinical cancer trials: a qualitative analysis before and after implementation of an online value clarification tool intervention.

BACKGROUND: Patients with advanced cancer who no longer have standard treatment options available may decide to participate in early phase clinical trials (i.e. experimental treatments with uncertain outcomes). Shared decision-making (SDM) models help to understand considerations that influence patients' decision. Discussion of patient values is essential to SDM, but such communication is often limited in this context and may require new interventions. The OnVaCT intervention, consisting of a preparatory online value clarification tool (OnVaCT) for patients and communication training for oncol

Reduced-dose deep learning iterative reconstruction for abdominal computed tomography with low tube voltage and tube current.

BACKGROUND: The low tube-voltage technique (e.g., 80 kV) can efficiently reduce the radiation dose and increase the contrast enhancement of vascular and parenchymal structures in abdominal CT. However, a high tube current is always required in this setting and limits the dose reduction potential. This study investigated the feasibility of a deep learning iterative reconstruction algorithm (Deep IR) in reducing the radiation dose while improving the image quality for abdominal computed tomography (CT) with low tube voltage and current. METHODS: Sixty patients (male/female, 36/24; Age, 57.72 ±
