BACKGROUND: Granulocyte-colony stimulating factor (G-CSF) is used in cancer patients to treat chemotherapy-induced neutropenia (CIN). However, G-CSF poses few risks. Despite the regular use of G-CSF in CIN management, there is a paucity of published data on its safety profile in the management of CIN in India. Hence, the present study was designed to demonstrate the safety profile of G-CSF in patients with CIN.
METHODS: A prospective observational study was conducted over a period of 5 months enrolling 100 cancer patients aged from 18 years to 70 years. Patients with a diagnosis of CIN who re

Fibromyalgia (FM) is an idiopathic chronic disease characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain, hyperalgesia and allodynia, often accompanied by fatigue, cognitive dysfunction and other symptoms. Autoimmunity and neuroinflammatory mechanisms have been suggested to play important roles in the pathophysiology of FM supported by recently identified interferon signatures in affected individuals. However, the contribution of different components in the immune system, such as the B-lymphocytes, in the progression to FM are yet unknown. Furthermore, there is a great need for biomarkers that may

OBJECTIVES: Myofascial pain syndrome (MPS) is a regional pain syndrome that causes pain due to hyperirritable trigger points in the musculoskeletal system. Trapezius is one of the most commonly affected muscles in MPS. We aimed to evaluate the efficacy of an ultrasound-guided interfascial block of the trapezius muscle in patients with MPS.
METHODS: The records of patients who underwent an ultrasound-guided interfascial block of the trapezius between November 2019 and October 2020 were retrospectively examined. The pain levels of the patients were evaluated with the numeric rating scale (NRS).…

Acute haematogenous osteomyelitis (AHO) remains a cause of severe illness among children with the possibility of long-term consequences for growth and development. Previous research on sequelae from AHO rarely considers outcomes more than 2 years following treatment. This study aims to establish the quality of life of patients diagnosed with AHO in childhood up to 13 years after diagnosis, evaluating the impact on social, emotional, physical, and school function. Children treated for AHO between 2008 and 2018 at a tertiary referral centre in New Zealand were identified. Paediatric Quality of L

BACKGROUND: Neutralizing anti-granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) autoantibodies (AAbs) have been increasingly recognized to predispose healthy individuals to disseminated cryptococcosis. However, studies have only considered patients with central nervous system (CNS) infection. No longitudinal study has captured the disease spectrum and clinical course.
METHODS: We prospectively enrolled adults without human immunodeficiency virus infection who had disseminated or unusual cryptococcosis. We compared the demographics, clinical features, kinetics of serum cryptococcal ant

BACKGROUND: Pectoralis major is the most common muscle transfer procedure to restore joint function after subscapularis tears. Limited information is available on how the neuromuscular system adjusts to the new configuration, which could explain the mixed outcomes of the procedure. The purpose of this study is to assess how muscles activation patterns change after pectoralis major transfers and report their biomechanical implications.
METHODS: We compare how muscle activation change with subscapularis tears and after its treatment by pectoralis major transfers of the clavicular, sternal, or b

Pannexin 3 (PANX3) is a member of the pannexin family of single membrane channel-forming glycoproteins. Originally thought to have a limited localization in cartilage, bone, and skin, PANX3 has now been detected in a variety of other tissues including skeletal muscle, mammary glands, the male reproductive tract, the cochlea, blood vessels, small intestines, teeth, and the vomeronasal organ. In many cell types of the musculoskeletal system, such as osteoblasts, chondrocytes, and odontoblasts, PANX3 has been shown to regulate the balance of proliferation and differentiation. PANX3 can be induced…

Inherited metabolic disorders (IMDs ) are a rare and diverse group of metabolic conditions mainly caused by enzyme deficiencies, and in some of these, hormonal dysfunction is a relatively common complication. It may present in childhood and subsequently hormonal replacement is required throughout their life. Endocrinopathies can be a presenting symptom of an IMD in adulthood, which should be suspected when associated with multiorgan involvement (neurological, musculoskeletal or liver, etc.). A single IMD can affect any gland with hypogonadism, adrenal insufficiency, diabetes mellitus and thyro

BACKGROUND Osteosarcoma is a common malignant tumor of musculoskeletal stromal cells. Osteosarcoma clinical behavior depends mostly on the histologic grade, the site of primary tumor, the response to chemotherapy, and the presence of pulmonary metastases. The aim of this study was to knockout SHOX CNE9/10 in U2OS osteosarcoma cells and to analyze the effects on cell growth and apoptosis. MATERIAL AND METHODS U2OS cells with CNE9 knockout and U2OS cells with CNE10 knockout were established via the CRISPR/Cas9 system. Sanger sequencing was used to detect the success of the knockdown experiment.

Peripheral neuropathy, a common neurologic problem encountered by family physicians, can be classified clinically by the anatomic pattern of presenting symptoms and, if indicated, by results of electrodiagnostic studies for axonal and demyelinating disease. The prevalence of peripheral neuropathy in the general population ranges from 1% to 7%, with higher rates among those older than 50 years. Common identifiable causes include diabetes mellitus, nerve compression or injury, alcohol use, toxin exposure, hereditary diseases, and nutritional deficiencies. Peripheral neuropathy is idiopathic in 2

Women postpone childbirth to an age when morbidity is higher and fertility has decreased and yet the knowledge of mothers' morbidity related to age remains scarce. Swedish national register data from the Medical Birth Register and National Patient Register was used to investigate the incidence of diseases listed in the International Classification of Diseases, version 10 (ICD-10) in women who gave birth 2007-8. The index group consisted of women 40 years of age or older (n = 8 203) were compared to a control group of women, younger than 40 years (n = 15 569) at childbirth. The period studied w

Lower extremity powered exoskeletons with crutch support can provide upright mobility to persons with complete spinal cord injury (SCI); however, crutch use for balance and weight transfer may increase upper extremity (UE) joint loads and injury risk. This research presented the first exoskeleton-human musculoskeletal model to estimate upper extremity biomechanics, driven by 3D motion data of persons with complete SCI walking with an exoskeleton and crutch assistance. Forearm crutches instrumented with strain gauges, force plates, and a 3D motion capture system were used to collect kinematic a

Biofilm-associated implant-related bone and joint infections are clinically important due to the extensive morbidity, cost of care and socioeconomic burden that they cause. Research in the field of biofilms has expanded in the past two decades, however, there is still an immense knowledge gap related to many clinical challenges of these biofilm-associated infections. This subject was assigned to the Biofilm Workgroup during the second International Consensus Meeting on Musculoskeletal Infection held in Philadelphia USA (ICM 2018) (https://icmphilly.com). The main objective of the Biofilm Workg
