Disturbances in sleep/wake cycle are a common complaint of individuals with Huntington's disease (HD) and are displayed by HD mouse models. The underlying mechanisms, including the possible role of the circadian timing system, are not well established. The BACHD mouse model of HD exhibits disrupted behavioral and physiological rhythms, including decreased electrical activity in the central circadian clock (suprachiasmatic nucleus, SCN). In this study, electrophysiological techniques were used to explore the ionic underpinning of the reduced spontaneous neural activity in male mice. We found th

Central auditory processing in humans was investigated by comparing the perceptual effects of temporal parameters of electrical stimulation in auditory midbrain implant (AMI) and cochlear implant (CI) users. Four experiments were conducted to measure the following: effect of interpulse intervals on detection thresholds and loudness; temporal modulation transfer functions (TMTFs); effect of duration on detection thresholds; and forward masking decay. The CI data were consistent with a phenomenological model that based detection or loudness decisions on the output of a sliding temporal integrati

Two crucial processes preceding voluntary action are determining the time for movement initiation and planning of the specific sequence of motor output. In this study we aimed to differentiate the neural activity related to motor timing and motor sequencing and to examine over what time periods they contribute to premovement activity during the readiness for voluntary action. Eighteen participants performed self-initiated voluntary finger movements in a readiness potential paradigm, both during EEG measurement and during fMRI. The finger movement task involved three conditions: (1) simple repe

Substantial evidence implicates dopaminergic neural systems in the occurrence of polydipsia in both animals and humans. Two experiments were conducted in order to specify the behavioral mechanisms whereby manipulation of dopaminergic neural transmission can affect scheduled-induced polydipsia (SIP). The role of dopamine D1 and D2 receptors was investigated by comparing the behavioral effects of dopamine D1 agonists (SKF 38393 and SKF 82958) and antagonists (SCH 23390 and SKF 83566) to those of a dopamine D2 agonist (quinpirole) and antagonist (haloperidol) by using an animal model of excessive

A survey was conducted of the results of mid-trimester diagnostic amniocenteses in the Oxford Region from 1974 to 1981. The survey used data relating to all 4357 singleton pregnancies in which an amniocentesis was performed during this period. Follow-up information on outcome was obtained in respect of 4284 (98 per cent) pregnancies. A cell culture to determine karyotype and an alpha-fetoprotein determination was carried out in all cases. From 1974 to 1981 amniocenteses became increasingly common, rising from 2 to 32 per 1000 births. The most common indication for amniocentesis was a high risk

Spinal cord injury (SCI) induces a detrimental secondary inflammatory cascade driven largely by pro-inflammatory M1 macrophages, which impedes neural repair. Tetramethylpyrazine (TMP), a bioactive alkaloid from Ligusticum chuanxiong, has shown promise in modulating neuroinflammation. In this study, Sprague-Dawley rats subjected to thoracic contusion SCI received daily intraperitoneal TMP at 60 mg/kg or 80 mg/kg for 7 days. TMP treatment significantly improved hindlimb motor function, as evidenced by higher Basso-Beattie-Bresnahan (BBB) locomotor scores from day 7 through day 28 post-injury and

This review summarizes a growing collection of data on adult neurogenesis in various vertebrate species, with a focus on teleost fish and mammals. Teleost fish serve as exceptional models for studying the dynamics of the cell cycle and the functions of adult neural stem progenitor cells (aNSPCs) throughout the central nervous system (CNS). New information about the characteristics of cells in various areas of the telencephalon of non-model objects-juvenile masu salmon Oncorhynchus masou and chum salmon Oncorhynchus keta-during postembryonic ontogenesis and after traumatic injury expands the cu

OBJECTIVE: Peripheral nerve stimulation is a drug-free alternative for chronic pain management, suppressing nociception through gating mechanisms in the spine. However, excitation through electrical stimulation does not easily discriminate between sensory and motor fibers or their functional subtypes, and can cause off-target effects. Targeted optogenetic inhibition may be a more selective method to suppress nociceptive activity directly while leaving neighboring fibers unaffected.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this study, the chloride-specific light-gated ion pump halorhodopsin (enhanced Natrono

The abnormal heart conduction, known as arrhythmia, can contribute to cardiac diseases that carry the risk of fatal consequences. Healthcare professionals typically use electrocardiogram (ECG) signals and certain preliminary tests to identify abnormal patterns in a patient's cardiac activity. To assess the overall cardiac health condition, cardiac specialists monitor these activities separately. This procedure may be arduous and time-intensive, potentially impacting the patient's well-being. This study automates and introduces a novel solution for predicting the cardiac health conditions, spec

Whole-body vibration (WBV) is a physical stimulation method that transmits mechanical oscillations to the entire body through a vibration platform or device. Biokinetic and epidemiologic studies have shown that prolonged exposure to high-intensity WBV increases health risks, primarily to the lumbar spine and the nervous system connected to it. There is currently insufficient evidence to demonstrate a quantitative relationship between vibration exposure and risk of health effects. The positive effects of WBV on increasing muscle strength and improving balance and flexibility are well known, but

Background: Typical cauda equina syndrome (CES) presents as low back pain, bilateral leg pain with motor and sensory deficits, genitourinary dysfunction, saddle anesthesia and fecal incontinence. In addition, it is a neurosurgical emergency, which is essential to diagnose as soon as possible, and needs prompt intervention. However, unilateral CES is rare. Here, we report a unique case of a patient who had unilateral symptoms of CES due to cancer metastasis and was diagnosed through electromyography. Methods: A 71-year-old man with diffuse large B cell lymphoma (DLBCL) suffered from severe pain

INTRODUCTION: Joubert syndrome (JS) is a recessive disorder characterized by a congenital malformation of the mid-hindbrain and a large spectrum of clinical features including optic nerve morphologic abnormalities. The function of the visual pathways, including the optic nerve, can be objectively evaluated by visual evoked potential (VEP) recordings. Our work aims to employ VEP to evaluate the neural conduction along the visual pathways in JS patients with or without optic nerve morphologic abnormalities (ONMA).
METHODS: In this observational and prospective study, 18 children with genetic di…

Oligodendrocyte myelination depends on actin cytoskeleton rearrangement. Neural Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome protein(N-Wasp) is an actin nucleation factor that promotes polymerization of branched actin filaments. N-Wasp activity is essential for myelin membrane wrapping by Schwann cells, but its role in oligodendrocytes and CNS myelination remains unknown. Here we report that oligodendrocytes-specific deletion of N-Wasp in mice of both sexes resulted in hypomyelination (i.e., reduced number of myelinated axons and thinner myelin profiles), as well as substantial focal hypermyelination reflected by

The present study describes the fabrication of polyaniline-silk fibroin (PASF) nanocomposite-based nerve conduits and their subsequent implantation in a rat sciatic nerve injury model for peripheral nerve regeneration. This is the first in vivo study of polyaniline-based nerve conduits describing the safety and efficacy of the conduits in treating peripheral nerve injuries. The nanocomposite was synthesized by electrospinning a mixture of silk fibroin protein and polyaniline wherein the silk nanofibers were observed to be uniformly coated with polyaniline nanoparticles. Blinking reflex was elicited by acoustic stimulus to investigate the reflex pathway in the encéphalo isolé cat. Reflex responses were recorded using electromyography (EMG) of the orbicularis oculi. The investigation was as follows: After stimulation by a loud click sound, the EMGs of the orbicularis oculi were elicited bilaterally. Latencies were 17-20 msec on the ipsilateral side, and 19-21 msec on the contralateral side. By electrical stimulation of the peripheral nerve in the cochlea and the acoustic nerve EMGs were also obtained. The latencies of the electrical stimulation responses correl

Deglutition syncope, also known as swallow syncope, is a neurally mediated reflex syndrome. The common intervention of the heart, esophagus, and stomach by the vagus nerve is central to its pathogenesis, whereby swallowing causes inhibition of the cardiac conduction system. It is most commonly associated with disorders of the esophagus, both organic and functional. Herein we describe the case of a 48-year-old man presenting with transient syncopal episodes that occurred while eating caused by an intrathoracic stomach due to a hiatal hernia.
