The human rewards network is a complex system spanning both cortical and subcortical regions. While much is known about the functions of the various components of the network, research on the behavior of the network as a whole has been stymied due to an inability to detect signals at a high enough temporal resolution from both superficial and deep network components simultaneously. In this paper, we describe the application of magnetoencephalographic imaging (MEG) combined with advanced signal processing techniques to this problem. Using data collected while subjects performed a rewards-relate

The juxtacapsular nucleus of the anterior division of the BNST (jcBNST) receives robust glutamatergic projections from the basolateral nucleus of the amygdala (BLA), the postpiriform transition area, and the insular cortex as well as dopamine (DA) inputs from the midbrain. In turn the jcBNST sends GABAergic projections to the medial division of the central nucleus of the amygdala (CEAm) as well as other brain regions. We recently described a form of long-term potentiation of the intrinsic excitability (LTP-IE) of neurons of the juxtacapsular nucleus of BNST (jcBNST) in response to high-frequen

The ability to image the newborn brain during development has provided new information regarding the effects of injury on brain development at different vulnerable time periods. Studies in animal models of brain injury correlate beautifully with what is now observed in the human newborn. We now know that injury at term primarily results in grey matter injury while injury in the premature brain predominantly results in a pattern of white matter injury, though recent evidence suggests a blurring of this distinction . These injuries affect how the brain matures subsequently and again, imaging has

The Bereitschaftspotential (BP) is a slow negative-going cortical potential associated with preparation for volitional movement. Studies since the 1960s have provided evidence for a BP preceding speech-related volitional motor acts. However, the BP associated specifically with phonation [corrected] has not to date been systematically investigated. The current investigation utilizes a novel experimental design to address methodological confounds typically found in studies of movement-related cortical potentials, to demonstrate the existence and localization of generators for the voice-related c

PURPOSE: Ninety percent of patients with tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) have epilepsy. Identification of epileptogenic areas can be difficult and studies are needed to characterize the epileptogenic network in more detail.
METHODS: Five children with TSC and focal epilepsy were studied using simultaneous EEG and functional MRI recordings. Tubers were marked by a neuroradiologist on the anatomical MRI. Spike-associated BOLD (blood oxygenation level-dependent) responses were superimposed with lesions.
RESULTS: Thirteen different types of interictal epileptiform discharges (IED) were analyzed

Functional neuroimaging and studies of brain-damaged patients made it possible to delineate the main components of the cerebral system for word reading. However, the anatomical connections subtending the flow of information within this network are still poorly defined. Here we study the connectivity of the Visual Word Form Area (VWFA), a pivotal component of the reading network achieving the invariant identification of letter strings, and reproducibly located in the left lateral occipitotemporal sulcus. Diffusion images and functional imaging data were gathered in a patient who developed pure

Periventricular leukomalacia (PVL) is the predominant form of brain injury and the leading known cause of cerebral palsy and cognitive deficits in premature infants. The number of low-birth-weight infants who survive to demonstrate these neurologic deficts is increasing. Magnetic resonance imaging-based neuroimaging techniques provide greater diagnostic sensitivity for PVL than does head ultrasonography and often document the involvement of telencephalic gray matter and long tracts in addition to periventricular white matter. The neuropathologic hallmarks of PVL are microglial activation and f

Neurons in the medullary reticular formation (MRF) of the rat receive a vast array of urogenital inputs. Using select acute and chronic spinal cord lesions to identify the location of the ascending neural circuitries providing either direct or indirect inputs to MRF from the penis, our previous studies demonstrated that the dorsal columns and dorsal half of the lateral funiculus convey low- and high-threshold inputs, respectively. In the present study, the gracile nucleus was targeted as one of the likely sources of low-threshold information from the penis to MRF. Both electrophysiological rec

Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and fiber tracking have been used to measure the fiber structural connectivity in humans in a non-invasive manner. However, low sensitivity is a principal limitation of these methods, causing a large number of possibly missing fiber tracts (FTs). Here we studied how the spatial resolution affects the sensitivity of the fiber tracing by rescaling data to different resolutions. Our data suggest that the spatial resolution can change the degree of the asymmetric cross-callosal connections in the lower visual field (loVF) compared to the upper visual field (upVF). Am

The dorsolateral column of the mesencephalic periaqueductal grey (PAGdl) differs from its adjacent columns in terms of afferent and efferent connections and the distribution pattern of different histochemical substances. Functionally, PAGdl is associated with aversive and defensive behaviours, but in an earlier study of this laboratory [E.M. Klop et al. (2005) J. Comp. Neurol., 492, 303-322], it was found that PAGdl specifically receives input from the nucleus prepositus hypoglossi, which plays a role in oculomotor control. In search for other oculomotor-related brainstem structures projecting

We review cough from premature birth, mature neonatal life, in childhood and adult life, and in old age. There is a regrettable lack of definitive studies, but many clues in the literature. The cough reflex seems weak in premature infants, but develops with maturity. It is pronounced in childhood, but there seem to be no studies comparing its strength then with that in adulthood. In old age the cough may weaken, as indicated by the prevalence of aspiration pneumonia. These changes are presumably related to the development and degeneration of the afferent and central nervous pathways for cough,

Studies dedicated to the repair of peripheral nerve focused almost exclusively on motor or mechanosensitive fiber regeneration. Poor attention has been paid to the metabosensitive fibers from group III and IV (also called ergoreceptor). Previously, we demonstrated that the metabosensitive response from the tibialis anterior muscle was partially restored when the transected nerve was immediately sutured. In the present study, we assessed motor and metabosensitive responses of the regenerated axons in a rat model in which 1 cm segment of the peroneal nerve was removed and immediately replaced by

Pheromone recognition in insects is thought to involve distinct receptor proteins in the dendritic membrane of antennal sensory neurons. We have generated antibodies directed against a peptide derived from the sequence of the candidate pheromone receptor HR13 from Heliothis virescens. The antibodies specifically labelled the cell bodies of a distinct neuron population housed in male-specific pheromone-sensitive sensilla. Combining antibody staining with in situ hybridization the reactive cells were found to express the HR13 gene. In addition, dendrites projecting into sensilla hairs as well as

Successful axon function is vital to the overall performance of the central nervous system (CNS). White matter (WM) axons are dependent on constant supply of oxygen and glucose to transmit signals with high fidelity. The optic nerve is a pure WM tract composed of completely myelinated axons while corpus callosum (CC) slices contain both gray and WM portions of the brain with a mixture of myelinated and unmyelinated axons. Axon function in both WM tracts is resistant to anoxia with a subset of axons able to survive exclusively on energy generated by glycolysis. In mouse optic nerves (MONs), rem

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of hip proprioceptors on soleus stretch reflex excitability in standing humans. A custom-made device to stretch the ankle extensors was mounted on the lower leg portion of a gait orthosis and was used to elicit stretch reflex responses while standing. Six subjects with motor complete spinal cord injury (SCI) and six spinal intact subjects were placed in the orthosis, and stretch reflex responses were elicited when static and/or dynamic hip joint angle changes were imposed. We found that static hip extension significantly enhanced the str

Orexinergic neurones in the perifornical lateral hypothalamus project to structures of the midbrain, including the substantia nigra and the mesopontine tegmentum. These areas contain the mesencephalic locomotor region (MLR), and the pedunculopontine and laterodorsal tegmental nuclei (PPN/LDT), which regulate atonia during rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. Deficiencies of the orexinergic system result in narcolepsy, suggesting that these projections are concerned with switching between locomotor movements and muscular atonia. The present study characterizes the role of these orexinergic projectio

The motor symptoms of Parkinson's disease (PD) are thought to result from increased inhibitory outflow from the basal ganglia to the pallidal receiving areas of thalamus (ventral oral anterior and posterior-Voa,Vop). To test this hypothesis, we examined the firing rates of neurons in pallidal and cerebellar receiving areas of thalamus in five PD patients and compared them to those of neurons in comparable regions of motor thalamus in two other patient groups where hyperactivity of GPi is not believed to occur [essential tremor (ET), pain]. Neuronal recordings were made during microelectrode-gu

The importance of space-specific single-unit activity for hippocampal formation (HF)-mediated learning and memory in rodents has been extensively studied, yet little is known about how the unit findings in rodents generalize to other vertebrate species. We report a first assessment of the space-specific single-unit activity recorded from the HF of homing pigeons as they moved through a plus maze for food reward. Rate maps of pigeon HF single-unit activity typically revealed multiple regions (2-5 per cell) of increased activity (on average, 2.5 times higher than other regions of the maze) that

Contour integration in low-level vision is believed to occur based on lateral interaction between neurons with similar orientation tuning. How such interactions could arise in the brain has been an open question. Our model suggests that the interactions can be learned through input-driven self-organization, i.e., through the same mechanism that underlies many other developmental and functional phenomena in the visual cortex. The model also shows how synchronized firing mediated by these lateral connections can represent the percept of a contour, resulting in performance similar to that of huma
