Modulation of Perception or Emotion? A Scoping Review of Tinnitus Neuromodulation Using Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation.

BACKGROUND: Tinnitus is the phantom perception of sound and can have negative effect on the quality of life. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a noninvasive neuromodulation technique, which can increase or decrease the cortical excitability in the brain region to which it is applied. tDCS has been used for tinnitus research since 2006. OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether tDCS affects tinnitus perception, related emotion, or both, and the potential implications for tinnitus management. METHODS: A scoping review was undertaken using the methods proposed by Arksey and O'Malley. Af…

Audibility, speech perception and processing of temporal cues in ribbon synaptic disorders due to OTOF mutations.

Mutations in the OTOF gene encoding otoferlin result in a disrupted function of the ribbon synapses with impairment of the multivesicular gl … sists of the SP, with no prolonged potential. Cochlear implants restore hearing sensitivity, speech perception and neural CAP by electrically stimulating the auditory nerve fibers. These findings indicate that an impaired multivesicular glutamate release in OTOF-related disorders leads to abnormal auditory nerve fiber activation and a consequent impairment o …

Caregiver Perception, Self-efficacy, and Knowledge of Methadone Tapers for Children With Iatrogenic Opioid Abstinence Syndrome.

Background: There are no definitive guidelines regarding the management of iatrogenic opioid abstinence syndrome (IOAS), but methadone tapers are one common approach. Methadone tapers can be complex for caregivers to manage, and there is a paucity of data about caregiver experiences administering medication tapers postdischarge. Objective: The primary objective was to describe caregiver perception, self-efficacy, and knowledge of administering methadone tapers. Secondary objectives included an assessment of the change in self-efficacy and knowledge of methadone and IOAS before and after discha…

Association of single nucleotide polymorphisms of ABCB1, OPRM1 and COMT with pain perception in cancer patients.

Pain perception is influenced by multiple factors. The single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of some genes were found associated with pain perception. This study aimed to examine the association of the genotypes of ABCB1 C3435T, OPRM1 A118G and COMT V108/158M (valine 108/158 methionine) with pain perception in cancer patients. We genotyped 146 cancer pain patients and 139 cancer patients without pain for ABCB1 C3435T (rs1045642), OPRM1 A118G (rs1799971) and COMT V108/158M (rs4680) by the fluorescent dye-terminator cycle sequencing method, and compared the genotype distribution between groups …

Black-on-black secondary occlusive IOL implantation to alleviate enigmatic light perception through a black IOL.

UNLABELLED: A 61-year-old woman presented with an 18-year history of a debilitating ghosting phenomenon and light perception in her right eye following implantation of a Morcher black intraocular lens (IOL) for intractable diplopia. On 5 occasions, she was referred to hospital ophthalmology, repeatedly requesting right optic nerve transection to alleviate the symptoms. The mechanism of light perception across the occlusive IOL remained enigmatic, preventing appropriate management. Morcher occlusive IOLs transmit high levels of near infrared (IR) light, which may cause light perception under ph…

Is the perception of dysphonia severity language-dependent? A comparison of French and Italian voice assessments.

In this cross-language study, six Italian and six French voice experts evaluated perceptually the speech of 27 Italian and 40 French patient … preted as being due to different voice pathologies in the patient groups. It was concluded that the perception of the overall grade of dysphonia and breathiness is not language-dependent, whereas the significant difference in the perception of roughness may be related to a perception/adaption process.

Defining face perception areas in the human brain: a large-scale factorial fMRI face localizer analysis.

A number of human brain areas showing a larger response to faces than to objects from different categories, or to scrambled faces, have been identified in neuroimaging studies. Depending on the statistical criteria used, the set of areas can be overextended or minimized, both at the local (size of areas) and global (number of areas) levels. Here we analyzed a whole-brain factorial functional localizer obtained in a large sample of right-handed participants (40). Faces (F), objects (O; cars) and their phase-scrambled counterparts (SF, SO) were presented in a block design during a one-back task

Dissociated α-band modulations in the dorsal and ventral visual pathways in visuospatial attention and perception.

Modulations of occipito-parietal α-band (8-14 Hz) power that are opposite in direction (α-enhancement vs. α-suppression) and origin of generation (ipsilateral vs. contralateral to the locus of attention) are a robust correlate of anticipatory visuospatial attention. Yet, the neural generators of these α-band modulations, their interdependence across homotopic areas, and their respective contribution to subsequent perception remain unclear. To shed light on these questions, we employed magnetoencephalography, while human volunteers performed a spatially cued detection task. Replicating previous…

Prefrontal cortex based sex differences in tinnitus perception: same tinnitus intensity, same tinnitus distress, different mood.

BACKGROUND: Tinnitus refers to auditory phantom sensation. It is estimated that for 2% of the population this auditory phantom percept severely affects the quality of life, due to tinnitus related distress. Although the overall distress levels do not differ between sexes in tinnitus, females are more influenced by distress than males. Typically, pain, sleep, and depression are perceived as significantly more severe by female tinnitus patients. Studies on gender differences in emotional regulation indicate that females with high depressive symptoms show greater attention to emotion, and use les

Predictors of poor perinatal outcome following maternal perception of reduced fetal movements--a prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Maternal perception of reduced fetal movement (RFM) is associated with increased risk of stillbirth and fetal growth restriction (FGR). RFM is thought to represent fetal compensation to conserve energy due to insufficient oxygen and nutrient transfer resulting from placental insufficiency. OBJECTIVE: To identify predictors of poor perinatal outcome after maternal perception of reduced fetal movements (RFM). DESIGN: Prospective cohort study. METHODS: 305 women presenting with RFM after 28 weeks of gestation were recruited. Demographic factors and clinical history were recorded an…
