Efficacy and safety of indomethacin 0.1% eye drops compared with ketorolac 0.5% eye drops in the management of ocular inflammation after cataract surgery.

PURPOSE: To determine whether indomethacin 0.1% eye drops are at least as effective as ketorolac 0.5% eye drops in treating ocular inflammation following cataract surgery. METHODS: Prospective, multicenter, investigator-masked, parallel-group, randomized, active-controlled clinical trial. Cataract patients were randomized in a 1:1 ratio to receive indomethacin or ketorolac administered QID for 3 weeks beginning 1 day before surgery. The primary end-point was aqueous flare measured by laser flare meter at postoperative Days 1 and 7. Secondary end-points included retinal thickness, slit lamp an

Hyperopic shift from posterior migration of hydrophilic acrylic intraocular lens optic.

UNLABELLED: Two cases that developed a delayed hyperopic shift in refraction following implantation of a single-piece hydrophilic intraocular lens (IOL) are described. The haptics of the Akreos Adapt IOL were flexed anteriorly by capsular contraction, leaving a marked gap between the optic and the anterior capsule. A third case that had marked capsule phimosis and similar anterior flexion of the haptics but with a stable refraction is also described. In this case, the anterior and posterior leaves of the capsule fused peripherally and the IOL optic position was normal. The effective power of a

Influence of spherical intraocular lens implantation and conventional laser in situ keratomileusis on peripheral ocular aberrations.

PURPOSE: To measure the effect of spherical intraocular lens (IOL) implantation and conventional myopic laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) on peripheral ocular aberrations. SETTING: Visual and Ophthalmic Optics Laboratory, School of Optometry, and Institute of Health and Biomedical Innovation, Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane, Australia. METHODS: Peripheral aberrations were measured using a modified commercial Hartmann-Shack aberrometer across 42 degrees x 32 degrees of the central visual field after spherical IOL implantation and after conventional LASIK for myopia. The resul

Outcomes of 25-gauge vitrectomy for proliferative diabetic retinopathy.

BACKGROUND: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of 25-gauge transconjunctival sutureless vitrectomy (25-G TSV) in the management of vitreoretinal complications of proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR). METHODS: A retrospective review of a noncomparative interventional case series including 200 eyes of 164 consecutive patients who underwent 25-G TSV for the management of PDR was performed. The main outcome measures were preoperative and postoperative visual acuity and intraocular pressure (IOP), the surgical success rate, and intraoperative and postoperative complications. All cases had a f

PURPOSE: To assess efficacy, safety, predictability, and stability after clear lens extraction (CLE) with multifocal diffractive intraocular lens (IOL) implantation. DESIGN: Prospective, nonrandomized, masked observational case series (self-controlled). PARTICIPANTS: Two hundred twenty-four eyes of 112 consecutive patients after CLE with bilateral AcrySof ReSTOR Natural IOL implantation. Eyes were divided into myopic (mean spherical equivalent [SE], -6.01+/-2.71 diopters [D]) and hyperopic (mean SE, +3.86+/-2.52 D) groups. Speed of capsular bend formation at the optic edge of acrylic, silicone, and poly(methyl methacrylate) lenses.

PURPOSE: To evaluate how and how fast a capsular bend is created clinically at the optic edge of an intraocular lens (IOL) after cataract surgery. SETTING: Jinshikai Medical Foundation, Nishi Eye Hospital, Osaka, Japan. METHODS: Capsular bend formation was observed by slitlamp after maximum pupil dilation in 45 eyes of 45 patients with senile cataract. Fifteen eyes each received an AcrySof MA60BM acrylic (Alcon), PhacoFlex II SI-40NB silicone (Allergan), or UV26T poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) (Menicon) IOL. Examining the correlation of lymphangiogenesis biomarkers with clinical condition in Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD).

The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and lymphangiogenesis biomarkers, namely LYVE-1, Podoplanin, VEGF-C, VEGFR-2 and VEGFR-3. This prospective and interventional study includes 30 patients with AMD which may be dry or wet type and 30 controls for whom vitrectomy and phacoemulsification was indicated due to additional pathologies (epiretinal membrane, macular hole, retinal detachment, and cataract). 0.1-0,2 ml of aqueous humor and 0.5-1 ml of vitreous sample was taken during the operations. Before the operations 1 tube serum wa…

Intra-population differences of apolipoproteins in the aqueous humor.

BACKGROUND: Evidence suggests that proteins related to lipid metabolism, such as apolipoproteins, play an important role in the maintenance … rimary open angle glaucoma (POAG). METHODS: AH samples were collected from 231 patients undergoing phacoemulsification or glaucoma incisional surgery at the Medical College of Georgia, Augusta University and subsequently analyzed via LC-MS/MS. The number of peptide spectrum matches (PSMs) for each protein was used as a semi-quantitative measure of relative protein l …

Univariate regression analysis of age, gender, cup-disc ratio, previous phacoemulsification, diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia, preoperative number of glaucoma medications/treatment duration/intraocular pressure (IOP), and GMII showed age and GMII to be possible predictors of treatment failure. On subsequent multivariate analysis, only …

Cataract Surgery Destabilises Temporary the Tear Film of the Ocular Surface.

BACKGROUND: Symptoms due to dry eye in the form of keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS) are often seen after cataract surgery. We investigated the influence of cataract surgery on tear film stability on the ocular surface. MATERIAL AND METHODS: 60 eyes of 60 patients who underwent cataract surgery were included in a prospective study in 2017 at the Eye Hospital in Hanoi (Vietnam National Institute of Ophthalmology). The mean age of the patients was 65 ± 10 years. The phacoemulsification was performed under topical anaesthesia by a clear corneal incision and implantation of a foldable IOL. The par…

Prevalence of diabetes and diabetic macular edema in patients undergoing senile cataract surgery in Italy: The DIabetes and CATaract study.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study is to determine the prevalence of diabetes and diabetic macular edema in patients undergoing senile cataract surgery in Italy. METHODS: It is a prospective, multicenter, cross-sectional study. Thirteen ophthalmic units equally distributed across the Italian territory have been involved in the study. For a period of 3 months, all subjects undergoing phacoemulsification received an Optical Coherence Tompgraphy (OCT) scan and were screened for the anamnestic presence of diabetes. In addition, five selected units collected blood samples from all their patient…

AIM: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of the excimer laser correction of the residual refractive errors after cataract extraction with intraocular lens (IOL) implantation in uncommon cases. METHODS: Totally 24 patients with high residual refractive error after cataract surgery with IOL implantation were examined. Twenty-two patients had a history of phacoemulsification and IOL implantation, and two had extra-capsular cataract extraction with IOL implantation. Detailed examination of preoperative medical records was done to explain the origin of the post-cataract refractive errors. All pati…
