A case of recurrent abscess on the left anterior neck due to a left piriform sinus fistula is presented. It is known that a piriform sinus fistula may cause acute suppurative thyroiditis, and also that it induces the recurrent anterior cervical abscess described in this case. Here, we suggest that barium swallow is an important aid to diagnosis cases of recurrent cervical abscess.

A patient developed sepsis syndrome with shock 7 h after an anaesthetic for a shoulder replacement. Tracheal intubation had been difficult and required the use of a stylet and gum-elastic bougies. A gastrografin swallow subsequently demonstrated an oesophageal perforation and mediastinitis was diagnosed at surgical exploration. She survived after a prolonged period of intensive care treatment.

Lymphangiomas are benign congenital tumors that frequently result in macroglossia. Tongue involvement may lead to airway obstruction, swallowing difficulties, mandible-dental deformities, and speech disturbances. This case report demonstrates the many difficulties in diagnosis and management. Reduction in tongue size with preservation of motor and sensory function is best accomplished by wedge resection of the tip of the tongue.

Early changes in reflux oesophagitis are difficult to assess on radiological criteria (Torrance, 1973). The later manifestations, particularly with stricture formation, are best assessed by barium swallow. Apart from stricture formation, marked reflux oesophagitis with coarsened folds may lead to a mistaken diagnosis of varices or carcinoma. The various radiological appearances that have been encountered are described.
