Decoding phonation with artificial intelligence (DeP AI): Proof of concept.

OBJECTIVE: Acoustic analysis of voice has the potential to expedite detection and diagnosis of voice disorders. Applying an image-based, neural-network approach to analyzing the acoustic signal may be an effective means for detecting and differentially diagnosing voice disorders. The purpose of this study is to provide a proof-of-concept that embedded data within human phonation can be accurately and efficiently decoded with deep learning neural network analysis to differentiate between normal and disordered voices. METHODS: Acoustic recordings from 10 vocally-healthy speakers, as well as 70

A Novel Understanding of Phocidae Hearing Adaptations Through a Study of Northern Elephant Seal (Mirounga angustirostris) Ear Anatomy and Histology.

The most conspicuous aural adaptation in northern elephant seals (NES) is complete absence of an auricle and a tortuous collapsed external acoustic meatus. The NES epitympanic recess contains massive ossicles immersed in the middle ear cavernous sinuses. Engorgement of the cavernous sinuses would make ossicles fully buoyant during deep diving. NES have a comparatively larger cochlear nerve, which carries a significantly larger number of axons than in terrestrial mammals, which would give them auditory ability similar to the obligate marine mammals such as cetaceans. Our calculations show that

Non-invasive stimulation of the auditory feedback area for improved articulation in Parkinson's disease.

INTRODUCTION: Hypokinetic dysarthria (HD) is a common symptom of Parkinson's disease (PD) which does not respond well to PD treatments. We investigated acute effects of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) of the motor and auditory feedback area on HD in PD using acoustic analysis of speech. METHODS: We used 10 Hz and 1 Hz stimulation protocols and applied rTMS over the left orofacial primary motor area, the right superior temporal gyrus (STG), and over the vertex (a control stimulation site) in 16 PD patients with HD. A cross-over design was used. Stimulation sites and protoco

Analysis of voice quality in patients with late-onset Pompe disease.

BACKGROUND: Pompe disease is a progressive metabolic myopathy. Disease progression is characterized, among other features, by progressive dysfunction of the voice apparatus. The aim of this study was to employ electroglottographic, acoustic and nasalance measurement methods on patients with late-onset Pompe disease in order to provide detailed information on the effect of the disease on voice quality. Voice quality is the key factor for estimating the effectiveness of ERT in late-onset Pompe disease. The study compared clinical phoniatric examination with electroglottographic, acoustic and nas

Vibro-EAS: a proposal for electroacoustic stimulation.

HYPOTHESIS: In situ evaluation of the vibration performance of a hybrid system for intracochlear fluid stimulation, constructed from a floating mass transducer (FMT) coupled to an electric acoustic stimulation (EAS) cochlea implant (CI) electrode. BACKGROUND: EAS uses both CI technology to restore severe-to-profound hearing loss at high frequencies and acoustic amplification for mild-to-moderate hearing loss in the low-to-mid frequency range. More patients with residual hearing are becoming candidates for EAS surgery because of the improved techniques for hearing preservation. Most patients w

The "Fingerprint" of Cancer Extends Beyond Solid Tumor Boundaries: Assessment With a Novel Ultrasound Imaging Approach.

GOAL: Abnormalities of microvascular morphology have been associated with tumor angiogenesis for more than a decade, and are believed to be intimately related to both tumor malignancy and response to treatment. However, the study of these vascular changes in-vivo has been challenged due to the lack of imaging approaches which can assess the microvasculature in 3-D volumes noninvasively. Here, we use contrast-enhanced "acoustic angiography" ultrasound imaging to observe and quantify heterogeneity in vascular morphology around solid tumors. METHODS: Acoustic angiography, a recent advance in con

Molecular profile of cochlear immunity in the resident cells of the organ of Corti.

BACKGROUND: The cochlea is the sensory organ of hearing. In the cochlea, the organ of Corti houses sensory cells that are susceptible to pathological insults. While the organ of Corti lacks immune cells, it does have the capacity for immune activity. We hypothesized that resident cells in the organ of Corti were responsible for the stress-induced immune response of the organ of Corti. This study profiled the molecular composition of the immune system in the organ of Corti and examined the immune response of non-immune epithelial cells to acoustic overstimulation. METHODS: Using high-throughpu

Allergy and brain tumors in the INTERPHONE study: pooled results from Australia, Canada, France, Israel, and New Zealand.

PURPOSE: A history of allergy has been inversely associated with several types of cancer although the evidence is not entirely consistent. We examined the association between allergy history and risk of glioma, meningioma, acoustic neuroma, and parotid gland tumors using data on a large number of cases and controls from five INTERPHONE study countries (Australia, Canada, France, Israel, New Zealand), to better understand potential sources of bias in brain tumor case-control studies and to examine associations between allergy and tumor sites where few studies exist. METHODS: A total of 793 gli

Spatial overlap of combined electroacoustic stimulation determines the electrically evoked response in the guinea pig cochlea.

HYPOTHESIS: Limiting spatial overlap between electrical stimulation (ES) and acoustical stimulation (AS) in the cochlea reduces the effects of AS on electrically evoked auditory nerve activity. BACKGROUND: Some hybrid cochlear implant systems have a regular array, whereas others have short arrays that spatially segregate ES from AS. AS settings in hybrid implants may also affect electroacoustic interaction. METHODS: ES (900 μA) was delivered in the high-frequency part of the cochlea, and the electrically evoked compound action potential (eCAP) was recorded to assess auditory nerve activity.

Sensitivity to structure in the speech signal by children with speech sound disorder and reading disability.

PURPOSE: Children with speech sound disorder (SSD) and reading disability (RD) have poor phonological awareness, a problem believed to arise largely from deficits in processing the sensory information in speech, specifically individual acoustic cues. However, such cues are details of acoustic structure. Recent theories suggest that listeners also need to be able to integrate those details to perceive linguistically relevant form. This study examined abilities of children with SSD, RD, and SSD+RD not only to process acoustic cues but also to recover linguistically relevant form from the speech

Avian species differences in susceptibility to noise exposure.

Previous studies of hair cell regeneration and hearing recovery in birds after acoustic overstimulation have involved relatively few species. Studies of the effects of acoustic overexposure typically report high variability. Though it is impossible to tell, the data so far also suggest there may be considerable species differences in the degree of damage and the time course and extent of recovery. To examine this issue, we exposed four species of birds (quail, budgerigars, canaries, and zebra finches) to identical conditions of acoustic overstimulation and systematically analyzed changes in he

Mobile phone use and brain tumour risk - COSMOS, a prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Each new generation of mobile phone technology has triggered discussions about potential carcinogenicity from exposure to radiofrequency electromagnetic fields (RF-EMF). Available evidence has been insufficient to conclude about long-term and heavy mobile phone use, limited by differential recall and selection bias, or crude exposure assessment. The Cohort Study on Mobile Phones and Health (COSMOS) was specifically designed to overcome these shortcomings. METHODS: We recruited participants in Denmark, Finland, the Netherlands, Sweden, and the UK 2007-2012. The baseline questionnai

Influence of sigmoid plate and dura mater on vascular wall displacement, vibroacoustic/hydroacoustic sources characteristics, and frequency-loudness assessments of venous pulsatile tinnitus: A coupled-computational fluid dynamics study combining transcanal recording investigation.

Investigations of pulsatile tinnitus (PT) caused by sigmoid sinus wall anomalies (SSWAs) using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) have recently increased in prevalence. However, accurate modeling of anatomical structures regarding sigmoid plate dehiscence and acoustic sources of PT remains lacking. This study incorporates coupled CFD techniques, micro-computed tomography, and scanning electron microscope to reveal the vibroacoustic and hydroacoustic sources and displacement characteristics of the transverse-sigmoid sinus system. Furthermore, the in vivo transcanal-recording technique combined

Optimal Strategy for HIFU-Based Renal Sympathetic Denervation in Canines.

Background: The association between the treatment efficacy and safety of high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU)-based renal sympathetic denervation (RDN) and the acoustic energy dose applied has not been fully studied and may provide important understanding of the mechanism that led to failure of the WAVE IV trial. The objective of this study was to externally deliver different HIFU doses to canines for RDN treatment and to investigate the optimal energy dose for HIFU-based RDN. Methods: Thirty canines were divided into five RDN groups according to dose of acoustic energy applied, and a sham
