OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association between hand dermatitis (HD) and occupational exposure to CS(2) and to determine whether combined exposure to CS(2) and H(2)SO(4) exhibits a higher risk of HD.
METHODS: In all, 110 subjects from a rayon factory were recruited and their exposure was classified into CS(2) exclusively, H(2)SO(4) exclusively, combined exposure, and nonexposure control based on workers' job characteristics. Defects in the mitochondrial energy generating system in patients with a mitochondrial myopathy are known to be localized in various enzyme complexes involved in energy production. Such a defect may exist at the level of mitochondrial creatine kinase (Mi-CK). We report the case of a 76-year-old white man with a diffuse, well-differentiated lymphocytic lymphoma at the base of his tongue. Although serum electrophoresis, immunoelectrophoresis, and immunofixation showed he had a biclonal IgA kappa and IgM kappa gammopathy, biopsy of the tumor showed a positive immunoperoxidase response only for IgM kappa. A neurophysiological study was carried out to examine peripheral neurotoxicity of extremely low levels of CS2, that is, less than 2 ppm (TWA-8hr) among Chinese viscose rayon workers. Protein electrophoresis was performed on the lavage effluent of dogs after isolated jejunal (N = 7) or transverse colon (N = 5) injuries and after sham operations (N = 5). The beta-globulin fraction was significantly elevated in the bowel-injured dogs as compared with the sham model. Protein electrophoresis may provide a useful diagnostic marker of hollow visceral injury.

Urine from 348 patients of a hospital for the mentally handicapped in Wessex was screened for abnormalities of aminoacid and mucopolysaccharide excretion. Persistent aminoacid abnormalities were found in 16 patients: two had phenylketonuria and one a severe variant form of hyperphenylalaninaemia (dihydropteridine reductase deficiency). In sera with positive latex tests for rheumatoid factors, the immunoglobulin class of the antiglobulins is influenced by the quantity of immunoglobulins present in the serum. Sera with 7S antiglobulins have high levels of IgG and IgA immunoglobulins. 22S complexes tend to be found in sera with high levels of IgM immunoglobulins. These findings suggest that the occurrence of antiglobulins and 22S complexes may be influenced by the hypergammaglobulinemia.

The degradation of yeast tRNASer with eight different exonuclease preparations from four snake venoms was investigated.
