Effect of slice thickness on liver lesion detection and characterisation by multidetector CT.

The purpose of our study was to compare the effectiveness of 3.2 mm, 5 mm and 7.5 mm slice thicknesses in the detection and characterisation of liver lesions found on CT in patients with known or suspected malignant disease. 110 patients underwent portal phase imaging using four-slice MDCT. Two blinded observers independently read hard copy images at each slice thickness. The size and location of each lesion detected was recorded by each observer on a diagram of liver segmental anatomy. Each lesion was characterised as benign, malignant or indeterminate in nature. A diagnostic confidence score

Vertebral shape: automatic measurement with dynamically sequenced active appearance models.

The shape and appearance of vertebrae on lateral dual x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scans were statistically modelled. The spine was modelled by a sequence of overlapping triplets of vertebrae, using Active Appearance Models (AAMs). To automate vertebral morphometry, the sequence of trained models was matched to previously unseen scans. The dataset includes a significant number of pathologies. A new dynamic ordering algorithm was assessed for the model fitting sequence, using the best quality of fit achieved by multiple sub-model candidates. The accuracy of the search was improved by dynamically

Corpus callosum abnormalities in psychopathic antisocial individuals.

CONTEXT: Psychopathic antisocial individuals have previously been characterized by abnormal interhemispheric processing and callosal functioning, but there have been no studies on the structural characteristics of the corpus callosum in this group. OBJECTIVES: To assess whether (1) psychopathic individuals with antisocial personality disorder show structural and functional impairments in the corpus callosum, (2) group differences are mirrored by correlations between dimensional measures of callosal structure and psychopathy, (3) callosal abnormalities are associated with affective deficits, a

CT angiography of the hepatic and pancreatic circulation.

Multidetector computed tomography angiography (MDCTA) is an established, noninvasive, and effective imaging method to evaluate the liver and the pancreas primarily for neoplasm staging and presurgical planning. However, its role has also extended into a variety of other clinical indications. Technological advances in MDCT scanners and post processing now offer new opportunities with CTA, but the challenges of protocol optimization should be confronted appropriately to meet the new expectations. In this review, we focus on the technical details with MDCTA protocols for liver and pancreas and br

Artificial Intelligence to Assist in Exclusion of Coronary Atherosclerosis During CCTA Evaluation of Chest Pain in the Emergency Department: Preparing an Application for Real-world Use.

Coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) evaluation of chest pain patients in an emergency department (ED) is considered appropriate. While a "negative" CCTA interpretation supports direct patient discharge from an ED, labor-intensive analyses are required, with accuracy in jeopardy from distractions. We describe the development of an artificial intelligence (AI) algorithm and workflow for assisting qualified interpreting physicians in CCTA screening for total absence of coronary atherosclerosis. The two-phase approach consisted of (1) phase 1-development and preliminary testing of an a

Post-PET ultrasound improves specificity of 18F-FDG-PET for recurrent differentiated thyroid cancer while maintaining sensitivity.

BACKGROUND: Positron emission tomography (PET) using fluor-18-deoxyglucose (18F-FDG) with or without computed tomography (CT) is generally accepted as the most sensitive imaging modality for diagnosing recurrent differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) in patients with negative whole body scintigraphy with iodine-131 (I-131). PURPOSE: To assess the potential incremental value of ultrasound (US) over 18F-FDG-PET-CT. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Fifty-one consecutive patients with suspected recurrent DTC were prospectively evaluated using the following multimodal imaging protocol: (i) US before PET (pre-U

History of cardiac computed tomography: single to 320-detector row multislice computed tomography.

Since the introduction of computed tomography (CT) over 30 years ago, the challenge of imaging the beating heart has been a driving force in the innovation of cardiac CT. Imaging the anatomy and physiology of the heart demands temporal, spatial and contrast resolution is arguably greater than for any other organ system in the body. Great progress has been achieved in using CT to evaluate coronary artery stenosis and plaque composition. In addition, techniques to evaluate cardiac function, including myocardial perfusion, regional ventricular wall motion, systolic thickening, ejection fraction,

Advanced hepatic vasculobiliary imaging segmentation and 3D reconstruction as an aid in the surgical management of high biliary stenosis.

BACKGROUND: Three-dimensional (3D) models are increasingly used to help surgeons, guiding them through the complex hepatic vasculobiliary anatomy. The biliary tract is a relatively untapped territory with only a few case reports described in medical literature. Our aim is to present an innovative 3D reconstruction methodology for biliary imaging and surgical planning, applied to a case of iatrogenic biliary stricture, with fusion of segmented CT and MRI images. CASE PRESENTATION: A selected case of Bismuth type III iatrogenic biliary stenosis for 3D planning. CT and MR studies were acquired w

Optical coherence tomography-verified morphological correlates of high-intensity coronary plaques on non-contrast T1-weighted magnetic resonance imaging in patients with stable coronary artery disease.

AIMS: Coronary high-intensity plaques (HIPs) with a high plaque-to-myocardial signal intensity ratio (PMR) on non-contrast T1-weighted imaging in patients with stable coronary artery disease (CAD) are associated with future coronary events. To characterize the morphological substrate of HIP, we performed a correlative optical coherence tomography (OCT) study. METHODS AND RESULTS: We examined 137 lesions in 105 patients with stable angina pectoris or silent myocardial ischaemia scheduled for percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) using a 3 T magnetic resonance scanner. Pre-interventional OCT

Role of diffusion-weighted MRI in acute pyelonephritis: a prospective study.

BACKGROUND: Imaging is vital in diagnosis of complicated pyelonephritis and has been traditionally performed by computed tomography (CT). However, CT with contrast agents cannot be performed in patients with renal failure. Diffusion-weighted (DW) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has the potential to overcome this disadvantage. PURPOSE: To prospectively evaluate the accuracy of quantitative apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) values to differentiate nephritis from renal abscesses in patients with pyelonephritis. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Forty-two patients with clinical and laboratory diagnosis

DTI registration in atlas based fiber analysis of infantile Krabbe disease.

In recent years, diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) has become the modality of choice to investigate white matter pathology in the developing brain. To study neonate Krabbe disease with DTI, we evaluate the performance of linear and non-linear DTI registration algorithms for atlas based fiber tract analysis. The DTI scans of 10 age-matched neonates with infantile Krabbe disease are mapped into an atlas for the analysis of major fiber tracts - the genu and splenium of the corpus callosum, the internal capsules tracts and the uncinate fasciculi. The neonate atlas is based on 377 healthy control subj

Organ volume by computed tomography correlates with longitudinal axis on ultrasound in patients with Gaucher disease.

OBJECTIVES: Although ultrasonography (US) may be recommended for repeat assessments of spleen and liver volumes, it is less readily used than magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography (CT) because of concerns of accuracy and reproducibility. In monitoring spleen and liver volumes for Gaucher disease where volume changes underlie management decisions, in experienced hands, US has a place because some patients are evaluated for decades and sometimes several times annually. The purpose of this survey was to ascertain whether one can maximize the efficiency of US imaging by use of one US

Pre- and postoperative evaluation of partial anomalous pulmonary venous return: by 3-dimensional cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging and cardiovascular computed tomography.

The pre- and postoperative evaluation of anomalous pulmonary venous return usually requires multiple invasive and noninvasive tests in order to obtain complete anatomic and functional data. Conversely, in a single setting, either cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging or cardiovascular computed tomography can sufficiently reveal this information in adult patients. Herein, we present the cases of 2 patients with partial anomalous pulmonary venous return who underwent preoperative and postoperative evaluation by either method alone, and we discuss the benefits and limitations of each techniqu

Indocyanine green videoangiography (ICGV)-guided surgery of parasagittal meningiomas occluding the superior sagittal sinus (SSS).

BACKGROUND: Maximal safe resection is the goal of correct surgical treatment of parasagittal meningiomas, and it is intimately related to the venous anatomy both near and directly involved by the tumor. Indocyanine green videoangiography (ICGV) has already been advocated as an intra-operative resourceful technique in brain tumor surgery for the identification of vessels. The aim of this study was to investigate the role of ICGV in surgery of parasagittal meningiomas occluding the superior sagittal sinus (SSS). METHOD: In this study, we prospectively analyzed clinical, radiological and intra-o

Automatic landmarking of cephalograms using active appearance models.

There have been many attempts to further improve and automate cephalometric analysis in order to increase accuracy, reduce errors due to subjectivity, and to provide more efficient use of clinicians' time. The aim of this research was to evaluate an automated system for landmarking of cephalograms based on the use of an active appearance model (AAM) that contains a statistical model of shape and grey-level appearance of an object of interest and represents both shape and texture variations of the region covered by the model. Multi-resolution implementation was used, in which the AAM iterate to
