Functional MRI studies in disruptive behaviour disorders.

Aggressive or antisocial behaviours with violations of social rules are the main features of disruptive behaviour disorders (DBDs), which are developmental diseases and include conduct disorder and oppositional defiant disorder. In the last decade, several efforts have been made to shed light on the biological underpinnings of DBDs. In this context, the main findings of functional magnetic resonance imaging studies in DBD are reported here. There are indications of neural dysfunctions in response to affective stimuli, especially regarding medial and orbitofrontal prefrontal cortex and connecte

Myringoplasty (A review of 365 operations).

A series of 365 cases of tympanic membrane repair by the same surgeon is analysed, comparing the results of different techniques and grafting materials. A detailed study of 206 of these cases employing the underlay technique with temporal fascia is reported. In this group a graft take rate of 91.4 per cent in dry ears, and of 89.3 per cent in all cases, was achieved. Various factors liable to influence the success rate are analysed and discussed. No cases of conductive or sensori-neural hearing loss resulting from the operation were encountered.

Mo2Ti2C3/CeO2/Neurotrophin-3 MXene Hydrogel Combined with Electrical Stimulation Promotes Functional Recovery by Activating the Biogenesis and Fusion of Mitochondria in Spinal Cord Injury.

Traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI) initiates a pathological cascade dominated by mitochondrial dysfunction and unregulated oxidative stress, collectively generating an inhibitory lesion microenvironment that abrogates endogenous neural regenerative capacity. Herein, we fabricate a multifunctional conductive hydrogel scaffold by incorporating Mo2Ti2C3 MXene nanosheets, hollow CeO2 nanoparticles, and neurotrophin-3 (NT-3) within a crosslinkable matrix. When paired with exogenous electrical stimulation (ES), this combinatorial therapeutic platform synergistically activates two core mitochondrial

Microstate Analyses to Study face Processing in Healthy Individuals and Psychiatric Disorders: A Review of ERP Findings.

Microstates represent brief periods of quasi-stable electroencephalography (EEG) scalp topography, offering insights into dynamic fluctuations in event-related potential (ERP) topographies. Despite this, there is a lack of a comprehensive systematic overview of microstate findings concerning cognitive face processing. This review aims to summarize ERP findings on face processing using microstate analyses and assess their effectiveness in characterizing face-related neural representations. A literature search was conducted for microstate ERP studies involving healthy individuals and psychiatric

Retrospective cumulative dietary risk assessment of craniofacial alterations by residues of pesticides.

In 2022, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) conducted a dietary cumulative risk assessment for active substances of plant protection products on two types of craniofacial alterations: 1) craniofacial alterations due to abnormal skeletal development and 2) head soft tissue alterations and brain neural tube defects. These effects were selected based on developmental biology knowledge and a hypothetical teratogenic process. Cumulative risk assessment was conducted for 14 European populations of women in childbearing age. The dietary cumulative exposure was determined using individual consu

Distortion of magnetic evoked fields and surface potentials by conductivity differences at boundaries in brain tissue.

We investigated the conditions under which inhomogeneity in electrical conductivity may significantly modify the magnetic evoked field (MEF) due to primary currents (i.e., neuronal currents) in the brain. In the case of an isolated turtle cerebellum immersed in a large bath of physiological saline, our theoretical analysis showed the cerebellar surface to significantly enhance the MEF due to a primary current, by a factor of as much as two, for experimentally determined values of the conductivities of the cerebellar tissue and saline. A further parametric investigation of the conductivity effe

Thermodynamic impedance mismatch in neurodegeneration: A biophysical framework for the prediction of amyloid-related imaging abnormalities.

Amyloid-related imaging abnormalities (ARIA) represent a significant iatrogenic complication of anti-amyloid monoclonal antibody therapies. To address this, we propose the Impedance Mismatch Theory as a theoretical framework and hypothesis, reframing neurodegeneration as a network-level thermodynamic failure characterized by localized thermal runaway (Neural Physiological Load Index (NLI) greater than or equal to 1.0). Within this framework, amyloid-β (Aβ) is modeled not only in its established biological context, but as a potential thermodynamic heat sink and bio-conductive electrical shunt d

SynNER: syntax-infused named entity recognition in the biomedical domain.

OBJECTIVE: This study evaluates the usefulness of explicit syntactic knowledge, integrated via a neural mechanism, in improving the accuracy of named entity recognition in the domain of biomedical text processing. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Syntactic structure of a text can be helpful to determine whether a certain part of the text is an entity or not. Parsing is an essential technique in natural language processing (NLP) that can be utilized to determine the syntactic structure of sentences in human languages. We propose to infuse syntactic knowledge through the attention mechanism using depende

Common brain areas in spatial navigation and visuo-spatial planning: A meta-analysis.

Planning is a fundamental function of both spatial navigation and visuo-spatial tasks, supported by overlapping and distinct neural substrates that remain partially unclear. We conducted an Activation Likelihood Estimation (ALE) meta-analysis on fMRI studies examining active, goal-directed navigation and visuo-spatial planning tasks (i.e., the Tower of London paradigm). Conjunction and contrast analyses revealed a shared network encompassing bilateral frontal regions, including the superior frontal gyrus (SFG), middle frontal gyrus (MFG), anterior insula (INS), and clusters in the left supplem

Innovative biomarker exploration in ASD: Combining Graph Neural Networks and permutation testing on fMRI data.

This study employed Graph Neural Networks (GNNs), specifically an unsupervised GNN, to extract node embeddings from brain regions in both Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and control groups. The objective was to identify potential biomarkers by analyzing node embeddings extracted from a graph model based on functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) data. Permutation tests were conducted to identify regions with significant differences in their embeddings between the two groups. Our results revealed several regions exhibiting significant differences, including the cerebellum, temporal lobe, an

Active Neural Network Control for a Wearable Upper Limb Rehabilitation Exoskeleton Robot Driven by Pneumatic Artificial Muscles.

Pneumatic artificial muscle (PAM) has been widely used in rehabilitation and other fields as a flexible and safe actuator. In this paper, a PAM-actuated wearable exoskeleton robot is developed for upper limb rehabilitation. However, accurate modeling and control of the PAM are difficult due to complex hysteresis. To solve this problem, this paper proposes an active neural network method for hysteresis compensation, where a neural network (NN) is utilized as the hysteresis compensator and unscented Kalman filtering is used to estimate the weights and approximation error of the NN in real time.

Ketosis regulates K+ ion channels, strengthening brain-wide signaling disrupted by age.

Aging is associated with impaired signaling between brain regions when measured using resting-state fMRI. This age-related destabilization and desynchronization of brain networks reverses itself when the brain switches from metabolizing glucose to ketones. Here, we probe the mechanistic basis for these effects. First, we confirmed their robustness across measurement modalities using two datasets acquired from resting-state EEG (Lifespan: standard diet, 20-80 years, N = 201; Metabolic: individually weight-dosed and calorically-matched glucose and ketone ester challenge, μ a g e = 26.9 ± 11.2

CNN-based flow field prediction for bus aerodynamics analysis.

The aim of this article is to evaluate the ability of a convolutional neural network (CNN) to predict velocity and pressure aerodynamic fields in heavy vehicles. For training and testing the developed CNN, various CFD simulations of three different vehicle geometries have been conducted, considering the RANS-based k-ω SST turbulent model. Two geometries correspond to the SC7 and SC5 coach models of the bus manufacturer SUNSUNDEGUI and the third one corresponds to Ahmed body. By generating different variants of these three geometries, a large number of representations of the velocity and pressu

Simplification of neural networks for skin lesion image segmentation using color channel pruning.

Automatic analysis of skin abnormality is an effective way for medical experts to facilitate diagnosis procedures and improve their capabilities. Efficient and accurate methods for analysis of the skin abnormalities such as convolutional neural networks (CNNs) are typically complex. Hence, the implementation of such complex structures in portable medical instruments is not feasible due to power and resource limitations. CNNs can extract features from the skin abnormality images automatically. To reduce the burden of the network for feature extraction, which can lead to the network simplicity,

An event-related potential study of consumers' responses to food bundles.

We conducted two event-related potentials (ERP) experiments to investigate consumers' responses to different types of food bundles. In Experiment 1, the participants were instructed to indicate their wanting of a three-yogurt bundle when their neural activity was recorded. The results of self-report wanting scores revealed that the participants wanted bundles consisting of their favorite yogurt products more than those of disliked products. Such a difference in self-report scores was also indexed by the N2 in frontal brain and the P1 in the left hemisphere. By contrast, bundles consisting of t

Modelling Zika Virus Infection of the Developing Human Brain In Vitro Using Stem Cell Derived Cerebral Organoids.

The recent emergence of Zika virus (ZIKV) in susceptible populations has led to an abrupt increase in microcephaly and other neurodevelopmental conditions in newborn infants. While mosquitos are the main route of viral transmission, it has also been shown to spread via sexual contact and vertical mother-to-fetus transmission. In this latter case of transmission, due to the unique viral tropism of ZIKV, the virus is believed to predominantly target the neural progenitor cells (NPCs) of the developing brain. Here a method for modeling ZIKV infection, and the resulting microcephaly, that occur wh

Neuro-urological sequelae of lumbar spinal stenosis.

PURPOSE: Lumbar spinal stenosis is characterized by the narrowing of the spinal canal, which subsequently induces impingement of neural elements in the lumbar spine. Thus, symptoms of lumbar spinal stenosis are typically associated with damage to those neural elements. Herewith, we target the genitourinary symptoms of lumbar spinal stenosis and the importance of differentiating these symptoms from other genitourinary pathologies, namely benign prostatic hyperplasia. MATERIALS AND METHODS: MeSH and keywords relevant to lumbar spinal stenosis and the organs of the urinary tract were used to a g
