Integrating Motor Unit Activity With Deep Learning for Real-Time, Simultaneous and Proportional Wrist Angle and Grasp Force Estimation.

OBJECTIVE: Myoelectric prostheses offer great promise in enabling amputees to perform daily activities independently. However, existing neural interfaces generally cannot simultaneously and proportionally decode kinematics and kinetics in real time, nor can they directly interpret neural commands. We thus propose a novel framework that integrates motor unit activity with deep learning and demonstrate its efficiency in the real-time, simultaneous, and proportional estimation of wrist angles and grasp forces. METHODS: This framework utilizes real-time high-density surface electromyography decom

Comparative study of DCNN and image processing based classification of chest X-rays for identification of COVID-19 patients using fine-tuning.

The conventional detection of COVID-19 by evaluating the CT scan images is tiresome, often experiences high inter-observer variability and uncertainty issues. This work proposes the automatic detection and classification of COVID-19 by analysing the chest X-ray images (CXR) with the deep convolutional neural network (DCNN) models through a fine-tuning and pre-training approach. CXR images pertaining to four health scenarios, namely, healthy, COVID-19, bacterial pneumonia and viral pneumonia, are considered and subjected to data augmentation. Two types of input datasets are prepared; in which d

Immune-related DNA methylation signatures, age prediction, and cross-tissue assessment via biologically informed neural networks.

Immune-related DNA methylation patterns may provide interpretable markers of biological ageing and disease relevance. This exploratory study integrated four Illumina HumanMethylation450 and MethylationEPIC datasets comprising paediatric peripheral-blood leukocytes (GSE36054; 192 retained after quality control), infant buccal cells (n = 542), neuronal nuclei (n = 58), and peripheral blood from a polybrominated-biphenyl exposure cohort (n = 659). The paediatric peripheral-blood dataset served as the primary modelling cohort, with infant buccal cells providing an independent early-life cross-tiss

Automatic grading of HER2 immunohistochemical whole-slide images based on a multi-scale hierarchical graph neural network.

OBJECTIVE: The HER2 immunohistochemical (IHC) score of breast cancer is a critical precursor for determining eligibility for anti-HER2 targeted therapy, as the final HER2 status (positive/negative/low) is determined by IHC results combined with FISH confirmation for equivocal 2 + cases according to ASCO/CAP guidelines. However, most existing artificial intelligence methods separate the detection of invasive cancer regions from HER2 grading and fail to adequately model the spatial heterogeneity of whole-slide tumors. This study proposes an end-to-end intelligent HER2 grading framework that inte

CGHNet: Cross-Guided 2D-3D Hybrid Network with attention mechanism for focal liver lesion classification.

Accurate differential diagnosis of focal liver lesions (FLLs) is pivotal for clinical treatment planning and prognosis. Although multi-sequence MRI serves as the primary imaging modality, precise characterization remains challenging due to complex lesion heterogeneity and subtle inter-class similarities. Existing computational models face an inherent dilemma: slice-based 2D models lack Z-axis spatial continuity, whereas volume-based 3D models often compromise intricate intra-slice semantics to capture global structures. To overcome these limitations, we propose the Cross-Guided 2D-3D Hybrid Ne

EENet-RLA: An Explainable Prediction Learning Framework for Alzheimer's Disease Classification from EEG Signals.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a prevalent neurodegenerative disorder affecting millions worldwide. Electroencephalography (EEG), a non-invasive, cost-effective, and safe diagnostic tool, is widely used for detecting neurological conditions. Existing EEG-based classification methods for AD diagnosis have limitations, particularly in adequately considering causal relationships between channels and implementing optimal feature selection, creating a need for highly interpretable feature screening mechanisms. This study presents EENet-RLA, a framework that integrates dynamical system theory with deep

Artificial intelligence in clinical metagenomic pathogen detection: A critical review of pipeline integrations, challenges, and future directions.

Metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) has expanded the scope of clinical diagnostics by enabling culture-independent detection of microorganisms in patient samples. However, mNGS clinical utility remains constrained by substantial computational demands, reference database biases, and the persistent challenge of distinguishing true pathogens from host background, commensal flora and environmental contamination. Traditional alignment and k-mer-based bioinformatics pipelines frequently struggle to balance speed, sensitivity, and the ability to detect highly divergent or novel organisms. T

Artificial intelligence classification of spatial CD8 + T-cell distribution on computed tomography in oropharyngeal cancer.

CD8 + T-cell presence and distribution in oropharyngeal cancer (OPC) reflects specific immune phenotypes and are linked to prognosis. Image processing methods such as convolutional neural networks (CNN) may enhance treatment decisions. From standard computed tomography (CT) images, this study evaluates radiomics in combination with machine learning models and CNN for prediction of spatially resolved CD8 + T-cell immune profiles and survival outcomes. Pre-treatment CT images were analysed using and comparing radiomics and CNNs to predict stroma-to-cancer cell islet CD8 + T-cell infiltration rat

3DCNN-SL framework for the diagnosis of Parkinson's disease using frequency-preserving 3D EEG tensors.

Parkinson's disease (PD) still requires scalable and non-invasive diagnostic biomarkers that support the decoding of medication-responsive neural activity. This study introduces 3DCNN-SL, a hybrid 3D CNN + Stacked LSTM framework designed to assess frequency-preserving 3D EEG tensors generated from Morlet wavelet transforms and azimuthal equidistant projections of auditory oddball responses, while preserving band-specific resolution for intercomparison at single-band and multi-band scales either separately or together. The model was applied and validated on the PRED + CT dataset of 25 PD patien

Artificial intelligence-enhancement of flow cytometry data accelerates the identification of measurable residual chronic lymphocytic leukemia.

Flow cytometry (FC) is essential for detecting measurable residual disease (MRD) in chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), but its use is limited by the expertise and time required for manual analysis. We developed an artificial intelligence (AI) pipeline, Clustering/Classification of All Events, Dimensionality reduction, Downsampling, and Aberrancy Scaling (CCADDAS), to automatically enhance raw FC files, streamlining CLL MRD detection using a single-tube 10-color panel. FC files from 166 MRD-positive and 61 MRD-negative cases were processed in a cloud environment. Automated steps included error

A new graph-transformer framework for EEG-based differentiation of Alzheimer's disease and frontotemporal dementia.

Differentiating between Alzheimer's disease (AD), frontotemporal dementia (FTD), and cognitively normal (CN) subjects remains a significant challenge in clinical neurodiagnosis. This study introduces an automated framework that combines electroencephalography (EEG) signal processing with graph-based deep learning (DL) to improve disease classification. The process begins with artifact suppression and a DL-driven filtering model to enhance EEG signal quality. Once filtered, the signals are segmented, and essential features are extracted to build graph representations that reflect brain connecti

Adaptive distribution-aware transformer for multi-scale visual representation learning on imbalanced and low-resolution data.

Deep learning models often struggle with class imbalance and low-resolution medical images, where critical spatial details and minority-class features are underrepresented. We introduce the Adaptive Distribution-aware Vision Transformer (AdaptiveViT), a novel hybrid CNN-Transformer architecture that unifies fine-grained local feature extraction with global contextual modelling. AdaptiveViT incorporates a distribution-aware modulation mechanism that adaptively adjusts feature emphasis according to the severity of class imbalance. In addition, a Distribution-aware Adaptive (DA) Loss incorporates

An interpretable deep learning framework for predictive modeling of postoperative infections in ICU patients.

A significant proportion of intensive care unit (ICU) patients undergo surgical procedures, and some may develop postoperative infections. Accurately predicting postoperative infection risk and identifying key contributing factors is crucial for improving postoperative management and understanding infection mechanisms. However, this task is challenging due to the complex interplay of multiple risk factors. While machine learning models can model these intricate associations to predict postoperative infection risk, their lack of interpretability - failing to uncover each factor's impact-hinders

Automated counting of prostate cell types with image processing and machine learning.

Traditional cell counting in clinical and research settings often relies on hemocytometry, a manual technique that is labor-intensive and prone to human error. These limitations in precision and throughput can hinder the development of effective diagnostic and therapeutic strategies, particularly in the context of prostate cancer. Recent advances in machine learning have shown considerable promise in enhancing the accuracy and efficiency of cell enumeration. In this study, we present a novel software system for the automated counting of prostate cancer cells, integrating image processing with

Controlled Evaluation of Hybrid Multi-Face Recognition Pipelines for Real-Time Occluded Face Recognition on Edge Devices.

Accurate recognition of partially occluded faces remains challenging in unconstrained and real-time environments, especially under masks, partial occlusions, pose variation, and illumination changes. This study presents a controlled comparison of three hybrid multi-face recognition pipelines for robust occluded face recognition. For fair evaluation, all pipelines use the same SCRFD face detector, preprocessing protocol, Linear SVM classifier, and 60% unknown rejection threshold, while varying only the feature extractor: ResNet29, ConvNeXt, and ResNet100 with ArcFace embeddings. Surface-Engineered Carbon Nanotubes Aerogel Sensor Array Enabled AI-Driven Selective Detection of Biomarker VOCs: A Proof-of-Concept in Simulated Humid Mixtures.

Selective detection and quantitative analysis of biomarker volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in complex gas mixtures remain a major challenge for noninvasive breath diagnostics due to wide concentration variability and strong humidity interference. Here, a deliberately heterogeneous chemiresistive sensor array based on six flexible, freestanding porous carbon nanotube (CNT) aerogel films is reported, where the CNT aerogel simultaneously functions as a conductive ambient-temperature transducer and a high-surface-area scaffold. Selectivity was engineered through integration with metal oxides (Cu
