Pathological observations were carried out on 100 male rats of Sprague-Dawley strain obtained from 5 outbreaks of sialodacryoadenitis (SDA). In accordance with clinical and macroscopic findings, principal microscopic changes were found in the salivary (submaxillary and parotid) and Harderian glands. The experimental infection of rodents as potential, definitive hosts with Hymenolepis straminea indicated that hamsters and field mice were susceptible to infection. By comparison, laboratory mice exhibited a significantly lowered susceptibility. Artificially induced depression of the immune response enabled the parasite to be cultured in several strains of laboratory mice, and suggested that the thymus played a major role in rejection of the parasite.

Of 63 patients with reflux and renal atrophy renal dysplasia was found in 9.5 per cent. Pyelonephritis was apparent in 81 per cent of the atrophic lesions. Urinary obstruction or ectasia was apparent in each case with dysplasia and only 2 were associated with histologic evidence of pyelonephritis. Pyelonephritis appears to be a major causal factor in atrophy occurring in renal units with reflux. Early urinary tract obstruction or distension may predispose to renal dysplasia.

A study was performed in a pediatric hospital in Tripoli, Libya where the familial backgrounds of 50 marasmic infants were compared with those of a group of 50 essentially healthy infants of similar age. Families with marasmic infants had more children but lived in smaller homes than the comparison families. Two patients with chlamydial pneumonia of infancy are described. One recovered spontaneously without any specific antichlamydial treatment. The other, prior to a belated antimicrobial therapy, developed a persistent and protracted respiratory illness characterized by wheezing. Our observations suggest that: (1) untreated chlamydial pneumonia of infancy may spontaneously resolve, or may become a persistent and protracted disease, and (2) wheezing may be a very prominent manifestation of the disease and should be differentiated from wheezing due to bronchiolitis and bronchial asthma.

Under continuous observation of several months, 42 patients from the eastern province of Sierra Leone, Liberia (Lofa County), and neighbouring Guinea were identified as Lassa fever cases by indirect immunofluorescent antibody technique, indicating that the disease is endemic in these areas. The clinical course varied from mild disease to severe illness with haemorrhagic disorders. The fatality rate was 14%. Scanning and transmission electron microscopic studies were done on five strains of flagellated Legionella pneumophila cultured for 1 to 3 days on charcoal yeast extract agar or yeast extract broth. Recent work has shown that pedicle osteocutaneous grafts retain their viability and participate actively in the restructuring of transferred bone. The present study investigates two aspects of this process: (1) whether or not healthy recipient bone is needed for the survival of these grafts and (2) the degree of periosteal involvement in osteogenesis. Bladder and urethral pressure responses to pelvic sympathetic and pudendal nerve stimulation 60 anesthetized cats were studied. Results show that urethral resistance is composed of smooth and skeletal musclar components, which relax with pelvic nerve stimulation. Reciprocal inhibition of the detrusor-external sphincter is a spinal-mediated reflex that can be elicited by pelvic or pudendal nerve stimulation. Urethral smooth muscular pressure loss with pelvic nerve stimulation can be blocked with propranolol, suggesting that beta-receptors are involved in this response.

The ultrastructural changes induced by (-) emetine hydrochloride were studied in two skeletal muscles of the rat. (-) Emetine was administered at a dose level of 2 mg/kg for periods ranging from one to four weeks. Trials of immunization against Leishmania tropica were initiated in the Israel Defense Forces in 1968. The rate of takes has declined gradually over the years. In 1975, 425 soldiers were inoculated with the same strain of L. tropica as that used since 1968; they were examined at three- and six-month intervals after the inoculation, with 291 soldiers undergoing at least one follow-up examination.
