Prospective associations between prenatal adversities and borderline personality disorder at 11-12 years.

BACKGROUND: The aetiological pathways to borderline personality disorder (BPD) remain only partly elucidated. Retrospective research indicates that prenatal adversity may be an important early risk factor in the development of BPD. This requires corroboration with prospective longitudinal studies. METHOD: A community sample of 6050 mothers and their children (born between April 1991 and December 1992) were assessed. Maternal anxiety and depression and maternal alcohol and tobacco consumption were assessed during pregnancy (18 and 32 weeks gestation). Postnatal risks, including maladaptive par

Randomized controlled trials in frontotemporal dementia: cognitive and behavioral outcomes.

Progress has been made in understanding the genetics and molecular biology of frontotemporal dementia (FTD). Targets for intervention have been identified, therapies are being developed, and clinical trials are advancing. A major challenge for FTD research is that multiple underlying pathologies can be associated with heterogeneous phenotypes. The neuropsychological profiles associated with FTD spectrum disorders often include executive dysfunction, language impairments and behavioral disturbance. Behavioral variant FTD is characterized by an initial presentation of changes in personality, beh

[Memory and trauma impact: a development approach].

The purpose of this article is to review the main neuroanatomic structures and the neurotransmission process involved at memory. Memory is dynamic based on the reunion of aspects of neuronal activation, in a process based on the individual experiences. It will be described the importance of limbic regions and their interaction during processing, codification and consolidation of a memory - each one related with neuronal rebuild. Further the authors describe the memory types known (explicit and implicit memories); the characteristics and their progress during normal development. It will be addr

Parkinson disease and impulse control disorders: a review of clinical features, pathophysiology and management.

Impulse control disorders (ICDs) are a heterogeneous group of conditions involving repetitive, excessive and compulsive activities that interfere with life functioning. Examples are pathological gambling, compulsive shopping and hypersexuality. Over the last decade, ICDs have become increasingly recognised as being associated with Parkinson disease (PD), with the literature highlighting a link between dopamine replacement therapy and the development of ICDs. Patients who develop ICDs in the context of compulsive anti-Parkinsonian drug use are described as having dopamine dysregulation syndrome

Clinicians' understanding of International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, 10th Revision diagnostic criteria: F62.0 enduring personality change after catastrophic experience.

International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, 10th Revision (ICD-10) has included a diagnostic category of "enduring personality change after catastrophic experience" (EPCACE). Preliminary investigation suggests that there is considerable endorsement in principle for this new category among experts in the field of intentional human trauma, yet many aspects of the diagnosis remain contentious. Criticisms leveled at EPCACE raised issues that question the reliability, validity, and clinical utility of this diagnostic category. In ICD-10, there are 2 sets of doc

Omega-3 DHA and EPA for cognition, behavior, and mood: clinical findings and structural-functional synergies with cell membrane phospholipids.

The omega-3 fatty acids docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) are orthomolecular, conditionally essential nutrients that enhance quality of life and lower the risk of premature death. They function exclusively via cell membranes, in which they are anchored by phospholipid molecules. DHA is proven essential to pre- and postnatal brain development, whereas EPA seems more influential on behavior and mood. Both DHA and EPA generate neuroprotective metabolites. In double-blind, randomized, controlled trials, DHA and EPA combinations have been shown to benefit attention deficit/

Major depressive disorder with psychotic features induced by interferon-alpha treatment for hepatitis C in a polydrug abuser.

Infectious diseases, especially hepatitis C, are prevalent among drug abusers. Interferon-alpha (IFN-alpha) is the pharmacological treatment of choice for this condition. Patients being treated with IFN-alpha can be expected to experience such psychiatric side-effects as development of depression, mania, irritability, changes in personality, hallucinations or delirium. In addition, certain patients are considered to be at greater risk of developing neuropsychiatric side-effects. Individuals meeting the following criteria are particularly vulnerable: over 40 years of age; having central nervous

Dissociative disorders among inpatients with drug or alcohol dependency.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of dissociative disorders among inpatients with alcohol or drug dependency. METHOD: The Dissociative Experiences Scale was used to screen 215 consecutive inpatients admitted to the dependency treatment center of a large mental hospital over a 1-year period (March 1, 2003, to March 31, 2004). Patients who had scores of 30.0 or above were compared with patients who scored below 10.0 on the scale. The patients in both groups were then evaluated using the Dissociative Disorders Interview Schedule and the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV Dissociative

[The behavioral disorders in epilepsy].

The behavioral disorders are more frequent in the epilepsy patients, children and adults, than in the general population. They have been extensively studied by numerous authors, as well as the underlying various factors. These factors are neurobiological and psychological. From the neurobiological point of view, the importance of the brain damages, their nature, their topography, their lateralization, their date of occurrence during the development have been underlined. Specific personality and behavior features have been linked to the temporal localization of the epilepsy, but many controvers

Childhood poverty, early motherhood and adult social exclusion.

Childhood poverty and early parenthood are both high on the current political agenda. The key new issue that this research addresses is the relative importance of childhood poverty and of early motherhood as correlates of outcomes later in life. How far are the 'effects' of early motherhood on later outcomes due to childhood precursors, especially experience of childhood poverty? Subsidiary questions relate to the magnitude of these associations, the particular levels of childhood poverty that prove most critical, and whether, as often assumed, only teenage mothers are subsequently disadvantag

Early-Onset Oppositional Defiant Disorder: What Factors Predict Its Course?

Although the early onset of Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) is associated with an elevated risk of later psychopathology (including but not limited to conduct disorder and antisocial personality disorder), little is known about the factors influencing the course of this disorder in early life. In this article we first review data and theory from four conceptually-distinct domains of risk factors for disruptive disorders (child characteristics reflecting biologic vulnerabilities, parent-child attachment, parenting practices, and family adversity). Then we describe an empirical study that ex

Social support and the chronically ill individual.

Nurses caring for the chronically ill need to be alert for the problems of social isolation and social impairment. Families often respond initially to serious illness by becoming over-protective and fostering dependence and a sense of impaired competence in the ill person. As the illness continues, families often experience exhaustion because of the demands of new roles, depleted finances, and other aspects of a changed lifestyle. Feelings of anger, guilt, and helplessness occur in the network, often leading to withdrawal of support--especially as the ill person's ability to reciprocate suppor

Osteosarcoma arising on a background of Paget's disease report of an unusual case.

One of the serious complications of Paget's disease (PD) is a significant increase in the risk of developing osteosarcoma. Approximately 1% of the patients with PD develop osteosarcoma. This contributes significantly to the mortality and morbidity of the patients with PD. We present the case of an elderly person, who developed osteosarcoma 1 year after being diagnosed to have PD. The patient had been diagnosed to have lymphoma 8 years prior to the diagnosis of PD. The association between PD and follicular lymphoma is discussed.

Cutaneous melioidosis in a Swedish tourist after the tsunami in 2004.

A tourist from Sweden developed cutaneous melioidosis after the tsunami in Thailand on 26 December 2004. Melioidosis is a severe, chronic infection which is endemic in Thailand and is caused by Burkholderia pseudomallei. Persons with traumatic injuries inflicted by the tsunami have increased risks of being infected by B. pseudomallei and melioidosis should be suspected if abscesses of the skin or inner organs develop in the months or years after the trauma.

Caplan's syndrome.

Caplan's syndrome is characterized by the presence of seropositive rheumatoid arthritis associated with a specific form of pneumoconiosis, consisting of multiple, well-defined homogeneous rounded opacities on chest X-ray. It develops especially in miners working in anthracite coal-mines and in persons exposed to silica and asbestos. In the development of the disease, genetic factors are considered to play an important role by influencing immunological reactivity of the organism exposed to various heteroantigens.
