Decoupling forgetting and preservation in federated unlearning via knowledge distillation.

Federated Learning (FL) enables collaborative model training without sharing raw data, but compliance with data privacy regulations such as the "Right to be Forgotten" requires mechanisms to remove specific clients' contributions from trained models. A key challenge in federated unlearning is selectivity: removing a target client's influence while preserving performance for other designated clients. This is inherently difficult because deep neural networks learn shared feature representations, and aggressive forgetting operations degrade overall model utility. We propose a Three-Phase Selectiv

Golden Ratio and Cybernetic Aesthetics for Hidden Patterns in Repetitive Human Movements: Golden-faux-sinus as a Two-Dimensional Optimization Model.

It is not easy to measure the amount of information within an object that is capable of leading to aesthetics-based feelings in a viewer, especially because of a subjective variability of human perception. Cybernetic aesthetics, for its part, might provide a rational way for understanding such a human phenomenon at least in special cases. Now, cyclic human movements - not only gait cycles, but also swimming strokes and tennis forehand strokes - were found, with their given internal sub-phases, to be characterized, from a temporal point of view, by the existence of coordinatively mechanized and

Investigation of task-specific biomechanical control strategies during sit-to-stand-to-sit in patients with knee osteoarthritis.

Knee osteoarthritis (KOA) progressively limits knee function and the ability to perform high-demand activities, such as sit-to-stand-to-sit (STS). STS tests do not allow arm support, limiting clinical applicability. This work evaluates the assistance and phase-dependent effects on knee loading, postural sway, and smoothness. Unassisted (uSTS) and assisted (aSTS) executions were evaluated in eighteen patients with KOA using three-dimensional motion capture and force platforms. Knee moments, centre-of-pressure (CoP) velocity and range in anteroposterior (AP) and mediolateral (ML) directions, and

Learning curve for lateral lymph node dissection in rectal cancer - a systematic review of literature.

BACKGROUND: Lateral lymph node dissection (LLND) remains controversial owing to differences in oncological principles between East and West, complex pelvic anatomy and the risk of complications. The aim of this systematic review is to determine the number of cases required to achieve surgical competence in LLND and to evaluate postoperative outcomes across different phases of the learning curve. METHODS: A systematic literature search was conducted in PubMed and Google Scholar for studies analyzing the LLND learning curve in rectal cancer resection. The three-phase pattern, consisting of lear

Nanophase: An Effective Dispersion System for the Decoction of Kushen Huaihua for the Treatment of Ulcerative Colitis.

INTRODUCTION/OBJECTIVE: In traditional Chinese medicine, the decoction turns into a complex multiphase system following exposure to high temperatures and a complex chemical environment. However, the effective dispersion system of the decoction of Kushen Huaihua (DKH) for the treatment of ulcerative colitis (UC) has yet to be elucidated. METHODS: DKH was separated into precipitated phase (DKH-P), nanophase (DKH-N), and solution phase (DKH-S) according to the particle size by ultracentrifugation dialysis, and the physicochemical properties of each phase group, such as particle size, morphology,

PANDA: Development and evaluation of a nursing competence team of respiratory therapists and advanced practice nurses to optimize the weaning process : Protocol of a two-phase feasibility study.

BACKGROUND: Weaning critically ill patients from mechanical ventilation (MV) is an important challenge of intensive care unit (ICU) management. Internationally, MV is often supported by respiratory therapists (RT) as specially trained nurses and advanced practice nurses (APN) with a master's degree, all functioning within an interdisciplinary treatment team. Currently, there is limited research focusing on the process and effectiveness of collaboration between RT and APN as a nursing competence team (NCT) in the context of the weaning process in MV. Continuous Relative Phase Angle and Variability: A Crossover Analysis of Duration and Surface Effects While Long-Distance Running Over Treadmill and Over-Ground Running.

Running coordination, quantified using continuous relative phase (CRP) and its variability, plays a key role in adapting to dynamic environments; however, how these measures behave during long-distance running on different surfaces remains unclear. This study compared lower-limb coordination and variability during prolonged running across treadmill and over-ground, focusing on how surface and duration affect movement patterns in sagittal-plane. Eleven healthy adults (nine males) completed 31-min runs at their preferred speed on both surfaces, on separate days, while data were collected using s

Supporting the Well-Being of People Living With Dementia and Their Family Carers Through Concurrent Arts and Well-Being Community Programs: Qualitative Perspectives of Participants and Facilitators.

Community dwelling people with dementia and their family carers (dyads) may become increasingly isolated which can lead to lack of support, heightened stress levels, anxiety and difficulty coping. For both populations, there is a need for supportive and inviting programs that can provide social contact, respite, and promote engagement for well-being. A co-design workshop was conducted which led to the provision of a pilot six-week art program for people with dementia concurrent with a wellbeing program for their family carers. The research had two phases. Phase one was co-design informed by ac

Construct validity and responsiveness of a health-related symptom index for persons either treated or monitored for anal high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (HSIL): AMC-A01/-A03.

PURPOSE: To determine whether treatment of anal high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (HSIL), vs active monitoring, is effective in reducing incidence of anal cancer in persons living with HIV, the US National Cancer Institute funded the Phase III ANal Cancer/HSIL Outcomes Research (ANCHOR) clinical trial. As no established patient-reported outcomes (PRO) tool exists for persons with anal HSIL, we sought to estimate the construct validity and responsiveness of the ANCHOR Health-Related Symptom Index (A-HRSI). METHODS: The construct validity phase enrolled ANCHOR participants who were wi

Quantifying Arms and Legs Contributions during Repetitive Electrically-Assisted Sit-To-Stand Exercise in Paraplegics: A Pilot Study.

Execution of Sit-to-Stand (SitTS) in incomplete spinal cord injury (SCI) patients involves motor function in both upper and lower extremities. The use of arm support, in particular, is a significant assistive factor while executing SitTS movement in SCI population. In addition, the application of functional electrical stimulation (FES) onto quadriceps and gluteus maximus muscles is one of the prescribed management for incomplete SCI to improve muscle action for simple lower limb movements. However, the relative contribution of upper and lower extremities during SitTS has not been thoroughly in

Using acute tryptophan depletion to investigate predictors of treatment response in adolescents with major depressive disorder: study protocol for a randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are amongst the most prescribed antidepressants for adolescents with depressive symptoms and major depressive disorder. However, SSRIs have significant shortcomings as a first-line treatment considering that not all patients respond to these antidepressants. Amongst paediatric populations, meta-analyses indicate that up to approximately 40% of patients do not respond, and for those who do show benefit, there is substantial heterogeneity in response onset. The neurotransmitter serotonin (5-HT) plays a role in the clinical effectiveness

When is a Proof-of-Concept (POC) not a POC? Pomaglumetad (LY2140023) as a Case Study for Antipsychotic Efficacy.

Pomaglumetad methionil (LY2140023) is a mGlu2/3 receptor agonist prodrug reported in 2007 to possess antipsychotic efficacy based on results of a phase 2 trial conducted entirely in Russia using in-patients with schizophrenia. Since that time, pomaglumetad methionil failed to demonstrate antipsychotic efficacy compared to placebo in three phase 2 or phase 3 trials, despite risperidone separating from placebo in one phase 3 trial. While there was some evidence of an antipsychotic effect in these studies on an a priori specified genetically-defined subpopulation based on single nucleotide polymo

The inability of tapeworm Hymenolepis diminuta and fluke Dicrocoelium dendriticum to metabolize praziquantel.

Biotransformation enzymes can, to a certain extent, protect parasitic worms against the toxic effects of anthelmintics and can contribute to drug-resistance development. The objective of our work was (1) to find and identify phase I and II metabolites of the anthelmintic praziquantel (PZQ) formed by the lancet fluke (Dicrocoelium dendriticum) and the rat tapeworm (Hymenolepis diminuta) and (2) to compare PZQ metabolites in helminths with PZQ biotransformation in rat as host species. Ultra high performance liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC/MS/MS) was used for this purpose. D

Epithelial human chorionic gonadotropin is expressed and produced in human secretory endometrium during the normal menstrual cycle.

The objective of this study was to determine whether beta human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) (CGB) subunits and alpha hCG (CGA) subunits are expressed and the hCG dimer is produced in normal human cyclic endometrium. Endometrial specimens were collected for histological dating from women undergoing treatment in our division of human reproduction. RNA from normal secretory endometrium was extracted, and CGB and CGA gene expression was assessed by semiquantitative PCR. Adequate secretory endometrial specimens were homogenized using protease inhibitors. Proteins present in the supernatant were se

Emissions from laboratory combustion of wildland fuels: emission factors and source profiles.

Combustion of wildland fuels represents a major source of particulate matter (PM) and light-absorbing elemental carbon (EC) on a national and global scale, but the emission factors and source profiles have not been well characterized with respect to different fuels and combustion phases. These uncertainties limit the accuracy of current emission inventories, smoke forecasts, and source apportionments. This study investigates the evolution of gaseous and particulate emission and combustion efficiency by burning wildland fuels in a laboratory combustion facility. Emission factors for carbon diox
