Production of the English /ɹ/ by Mandarin-English Bilingual Speakers.

Rhotic sounds are some of the most challenging sounds for L2 learners to acquire. This study investigates the production of English rhotic s … and English-specific characteristics of /ɹ/ by Mandarin-English bilinguals in both articulation and acoustics. Phonetic similarities facilitated rather than hindered L2 speech learning in production: Mandarin-English bilinguals showed better performance in producing the English /ɹ/ allophones that were more similar to the Mandarin /ɹ/ (syllabic and postvoca …

Predicting children's real-ear-to-coupler differences based on tympanometric data.

OBJECTIVE: Paediatric hearing-aid verification relies on measures of output obtained from the ear canal or in a coupler with the child's real-ear-to-coupler difference (RECD). Measured RECD cannot always be completed in children, leading to fitting inaccuracies. Audiologists often have tympanometry data that characterises the child's ear-canal acoustics. The goal of this study was to determine if tympanometry can be used to improve predictions of measured RECD. DESIGN: A retrospective analysis of RECD and admittance, tympanometric peak pressure, and equivalent ear-canal volume from 226 Hz tym…

Changes in ultrasonic vocalizations after unilateral cerebral ischemia in a rat stroke model.

Stroke frequently results in communication impairments that negatively impact quality of life and overall recovery, yet the biological mecha … ecorded in rats using an established mating paradigm. Stroke was associated with differences in USV acoustics including more frequent use of simple calls characterized by shorter durations and restricted bandwidths. These parameters were also found to correlate with post stroke lingual weakness. This is the first study to describe changes to rat USVs using …

Influence of phonetic context on the dysphonic event: contribution of new methodologies for the analysis of pathological voice.

Widely studied in terms of perception, acoustics or aerodynamics, dysphonia stays nevertheless a speech phenomenon, closely related to the phonetic composition of the message conveyed by the voice. In this paper, we present a series of three works with the aim to understand the implications of the phonetic manifestation of dysphonia. Our first study proposes a new approach to the perceptual analysis of dysphonia (the phonetic labeling), which principle is to listen and evaluate each phoneme in a sentence separately. This study confirms the hypothesis of Laver that the dysphonia is not a consta…

Broadband low-frequency sound absorption of underwater metamaterial coverings combining slit-helical structures and stepped plates.

An underwater acoustic metamaterial coating-comprising a slit, helical water cavity, stepped metal plate, and rubber-is proposed for broadband low-frequency sound absorption. Finite-element method analysis reveals that the slit facilitates acoustic wave entry, exciting local resonances and promoting mode conversion to enhance shear energy dissipation. The helical water cavity reduces structural stiffness, facilitating low-frequency resonance and amplifying the mode conversion effect within the rubber damping layer. Simultaneously, the stepped metal plate optimizes impedance matching and enhanc

Rapid movements at segment boundaries.

This paper reports on a one-to-one aspect of the articulatory-acoustic relationship, explaining how acoustic segment boundaries are a result of the rapid movements of the active articulators. In the acceleration profile, these are identified as acceleration peaks, which can be measured. To test the relationship, consonant and vowel segment durations are compared to articulatory posture intervals based on acceleration peaks, and time lags are measured on the alignment of the segment boundaries to the acceleration peaks. Strong relationships and short time lags are expected when the acceleration

Shockwaves Increase In Vitro Resilience of Rhizopus oryzae Biofilm under Amphotericin B Treatment.

Acoustical biophysical therapies, including ultrasound, radial pressure waves, and shockwaves, have been shown to harbor both a destructive and regenerative potential depending on physical treatment parameters. Despite the clinical relevance of fungal biofilms, little work exits comparing the efficacy of these modalities on the destruction of fungal biofilms. This study evaluates the impact of acoustical low-frequency ultrasound, radial pressure waves, and shockwaves on the viability and proliferation of in vitro Rhizopus oryzae biofilm under Amphotericin B induced apoptosis. In addition, the

Influence of nasal cavities on voice quality: Computer simulations and experiments.

Nasal cavities are known to introduce antiresonances (dips) in the sound spectrum reducing the acoustic power of the voice. In this study, a three-dimensional (3D) finite element (FE) model of the vocal tract (VT) of one female subject was created for vowels [a:] and [i:] without and with a detailed model of nasal cavities based on CT (Computer Tomography) images. The 3D FE models were then used for analyzing the resonances, antiresonances and the acoustic pressure response spectra of the VT. The computed results were compared with the measurements of a VT model for the vowel [a:], obtained fr

A study on relationship between pulsatile tinnitus and temporal bone pneumatization grade.

Pulsatile tinnitus (PT) is a common symptom in otology. In some cases, the venous flow in the sigmoid sinus (SS) is the source of PT. It is suggested that the venous sound is propagated into the tympanic cavity through the air pathway of temporal bone air cells (TBAC). The hyperpneumatization of TBAC was hypothesized as a direct pathology of PT through amplifying the venous sound, but there is no quantitative analysis. This study aims to quantify the relationship between the venous sound amplification and the pneumatization grade of TBAC. The acoustic numerical simulation and statistical analy

Differentiating Middle Ear and Medial Olivocochlear Effects on Transient-Evoked Otoacoustic Emissions.

The response of the inner ear is modulated by the middle ear muscle (MEM) and olivocochlear (OC) efferent systems. Both systems can be activated reflexively by acoustic stimuli delivered to one or both ears. The acoustic middle ear muscle reflex (MEMR) controls the transmission of acoustic signals through the middle ear, while reflex activation of the medial component of the olivocochlear system (the MOCR) modulates cochlear mechanics. The relative prominence of the two efferent systems varies widely between species. Measuring the effect of either of these systems can be confounded by simultan
