Impact of COVID-19 mandatory lockdown on maternal gestational weight gain and neonatal macrosomia rate at an academic medical center in Israel.

BACKGROUND: In an effort to prevent the spread of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), governments restricted outdoor activities and imposed lockdown quarantine. This change in lifestyle probably affected individuals' eating habits and physical activity. OBJECTIVE: To examine the effect of lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic on maternal antenatal weight gain, neonatal macrosomia, and other maternal and neonatal outcomes of women delivering at an academic medical center in Israel. METHOD: A retrospective, two-period cohort study conducted at a university teaching medical center in Afula, Is

Impact of SARS-CoV-2 on incidence, treatment and outcome of very preterm born infants in Switzerland: a retrospective, population-based cohort study.

AIMS OF THE STUDY: To assess whether the COVID-19 pandemic caused by SARS-CoV-2 had an impact on incidence, treatment or major adverse short-term outcome of preterm-born infants in Switzerland. METHODS: Retrospective cohort study of preterm infants born in 2020 based on two independent data sources from the Swiss Federal Statistics Office (FSO) and SwissNeoNet. Based on FSO data, we calculated the odds ratios for extremely preterm (22-27 weeks gestation), very preterm (28-31 weeks gestation), and late preterm (32-36 weeks gestation) births during the pandemic. Based on SwissNeoNet data of inf

The effect of COVID-19 public health restrictions on the health of people with musculoskeletal conditions and symptoms: the CONTAIN study.

OBJECTIVE: To quantify the change in quality of life, disease-specific indicators, health and lifestyle before and during the COVID-19 pandemic among people with musculoskeletal diagnoses and symptoms. METHODS: We undertook an additional follow-up of two existing UK registers involving people with axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA) or psoriatic arthritis (PsA) and participants in a trial in the UK who had regional pain and were identified at high risk of developing chronic widespread pain. Participants completed the study questionnaire between July and December 2020, throughout which time there

Developing the first national database and map of lymphatic filariasis clinical cases in Bangladesh: Another step closer to the elimination goals.

BACKGROUND: The Bangladesh Lymphatic Filariasis (LF) Elimination Programme has made significant progress in interrupting transmission through mass drug administration (MDA) and has now focussed its efforts on scaling up managing morbidity and preventing disability (MMDP) activities to deliver the minimum package of care to people affected by LF clinical conditions. This paper highlights the Bangladesh LF Programme's success in conducting a large-scale cross-sectional survey to determine the number of people affected by lymphoedema and hydrocoele, which enabled clinical risk maps to be develope

Analysis of risk factors for tuberculous infection following exposure at a homeless shelter.

SETTING: A homeless shelter for men aged ⩾ 50 years in Seattle, Washington, USA. OBJECTIVES: We examined risk factors for tuberculous infection following exposure to an active pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) case residing in a homeless shelter setting. METHODS: A contact investigation identified shelter clients exposed to the index case; these contacts were then assessed for tuberculous infection. Risk factors, including proximity and duration of exposure to the index case, were evaluated for association with infection. A retrospective cohort study was conducted and a multivariate logistic regre

Emerging risks and outcomes of blood transfusion in surgery.

Prior to 1900, blood transfusions were fraught with danger and often caused more complications than the underlying disease. Discovery of the ABO compatibility system in the early twentieth century opened the modern era of blood transfusion, yet ABO incompatibility-as a result of clerical error-remains a significant threat to the recipient today. The risk of disease transmission now includes new and emerging agents, such as Trepanosoma cruzii and West Nile Virus (WNV), as well as other existing pathogens. Transfusion-related immunomodulation (TRIM) presents a further risk to recipient patients.

[Smallpox--eradicated disease and a potential terrorist weapon].

Smallpox is a disease that followed humanity for thousands of years up until thirty years ago. It was possible to eradicate, since an effective live vaccine from crossreacting vaccinia could be developed. Twenty years passed since vaccinations stopped and very few people are protected against the disease today. Variola today has become an object of discussion due to the possibility that it can be used as a bioweapon. Due to the number of complications that can be expected a general vaccination is probably not possible. Research is ongoing to develop new vaccines. Many countries are improving t

A look-back investigation of patients of an HIV-infected physician. Public health implications.

BACKGROUND: Transmission of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) to five patients receiving care from an HIV-infected dentist in Florida has recently been reported. Current data indicate that the risk of HIV transmission from health care workers to patients is low. Despite this low risk, programs to notify patients of past exposure to an HIV-infected health care worker are being conducted with increasing frequency. METHODS: We recently conducted an investigation of all the patients cared for by an HIV-infected family physician during a period when he had severe dermatitis caused by Mycobact

Estimating the changing burden of disease attributable to high sodium intake in South Africa for 2000, 2006 and 2012.

BACKGROUND: Elevated sodium consumption is associated with increased blood pressure, a major risk factor for cardiovascular and chronic kidney disease. OBJECTIVES: To quantify the deaths and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) attributed to high sodium intake in persons aged ≥25 years in South Africa (SA) for 2000, 2006 and 2012. METHODS: Comparative risk assessment (CRA) methodology was used and population attributable fractions (PAFs) of high sodium intake, mediated through high blood pressure (BP), for cardiovascular and chronic kidney disease were estimated. This was done by taking th

[Communication as prevention of HIV infection and other sexually transmitted infections.].

OBJECTIVE: Interventions for the health promotion and prevention of HIV infection and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are not being effective. I have analyzed the risk behaviors, the effectiveness of the campaigns, and the effectiveness of the channels, to determine the strategic keys of an effective communication. The aim of this work was to identify critical points and opportunities for communication improvement to promote behavioral changes and adoption of healthy lifestyles aimed at preventing HIV infections and other STIs. METHODS: Target audiences, channels, terminology use

National roll-out of latent tuberculosis testing and treatment for new migrants in England: a retrospective evaluation in a high-incidence area.

Latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) screening is an important intervention for tuberculosis (TB) elimination in low-incidence countries and is, therefore, a key component of England's TB control strategy. This study describes outcomes from a LTBI screening programme in a high-incidence area to inform national LTBI screening in England and other low-incidence countries. We conducted a retrospective cohort study of LTBI screening among eligible migrants (from high-incidence countries and entered the UK within the last 5 years), who were identified at primary-care clinics in Newham, London betwee

Comparing the impact of two concurrent infectious disease outbreaks on The Netherlands population, 2009, using disability-adjusted life years.

In 2009 two notable outbreaks, Q fever and the novel influenza A(H1N1)pdm09, occurred in The Netherlands. Using a composite health measure, disability-adjusted life years (DALYs), the outbreaks were quantified and compared. DALYs were calculated using standardized methodology incorporating age- and sex-stratified data in a disease progression model; years lost due to disability and years of life lost were computed by outcome. Nationally, influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 caused more DALYs (24 484) than Q fever (5797). However, Q fever was 8·28 times more severe [497 DALYs/1000 symptomatic cases (DP1SC)]

Clinical information on admission is insufficient to determine the appropriate isolation regimen for acute gastroenteritis.

INTRODUCTION: The number of admissions for acute gastroenteritis (GE) is increasing. The majority of patients pass through a single high-flow emergency department (ED) area which increases the risk of spreading GE. The aim of this study was to determine the frequency and aetiology of GE for acutely admitted patients and to analyse their clinical information focusing on risk indicators of contagious aetiology and on the chosen isolation regime to determine if the GE required a contact precaution isolation regime. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This study included patients above 16 years of age who were

Australian men's sexual practices in saunas, sex clubs and other male sex on premises venues.

BACKGROUND: Sex on premises venues (SOPVs) where men have sex with men have been implicated in the spread of sexually transmissible infections, but few studies have described men's sexual encounters in SOPVs, particularly the degree to which men from different backgrounds engage in risky sexual practices. METHODS: Interviewer administered surveys were conducted with 186 Australian men who have sex with men (MSM) within 48 h of visiting an SOPV. They reported their sexual practices, the characteristics of their partners and other circumstances surrounding their sexual encounters. RESULTS: All

[Resistance in influenza viruses].

BACKGROUND: Influenza virus infection can be prevented and treated with antiviral drugs. The usage of such drugs in Norway has been infrequent, however, they are an important component in our pandemic preparedness planning, as it will probably be difficult to get access to the appropriate vaccine in time before the pandemic reaches the country. The first generation of influenza drugs acquired resistance to a large degree, in contrast to the modern neuraminidase inhibitors that until recently have had minor problems with resistance. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This review is based on research found

[Variola: the history of a museal present plague].

Smallpox, once a major menace of humankind, is the only endemic anthroponosis that has completely disappeared due to organized human action. The history of variola and of the rationales of prevention and control associated with ancient variolation, modern vaccination and the surrounding research enterprises and sanitary regimes provide paradigmatic examples of the involvement of medical thought and scientific dynamics with natural and cultural necessities and technological evolution. Taking the form of a broad historiographic sketch this is discussed not only based on representative literature
