INTRODUCTION: Pain perception, far from being a pathological mechanism, is a crucial protective stimulus to prevent additional injuries. Any disturbance in this complex system poses significant risks to individuals, affecting their quality of life and even their survival.
OBJECTIVE: This review aims to explore congenital insensitivity to pain, an extremely rare genetic disorder with an autosomal recessive pattern that results in the inability to perceive pain. We will focus on the well-known subtype, congenital insensitivity to pain with anhidrosis (CIPA). Our research seeks to update existin

Despite several existing laboratory-based studies of hemoglobin (Hb) E (HBB:c.79 G > A)/ β (nucleotide (NT) -28 A > G) (HBB:c.-78 A > G) -thalassemia, no reports have ever provided clinical severity information as well as dependency of blood transfusion. Previously, a comparative study of community- and hospital-recruited Hb E/β-thalassemia subjects was conducted in the lower northern Thailand between June 2020 and December 2021. A mobile medical team visited each community hospital on-site, collecting clinical severity parameters, and conducting Hb and DNA analyses. The control included Hb E/

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is caused by genetic and epigenetic alterations, as well as abnormal lifestyle and dietary habits, including contaminated food intake. Benzo(a)pyrene (B[a]P), derived from deep-fried meats, is regarded as the main dietary factor for tumorigenesis in epidemiological investigations. Although various studies have illustrated the adverse effects of B[a]P in malignancy through cell and animal models, the correlation between B[a]P exposure and clinical data remain to be explored. In the present study, we analyzed and identified novel B[a]P-associated circular RNA (circ

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a chronic psychiatric disorder that occurs following exposure to traumatic events. Recent evidence suggests that PTSD may be a risk factor for the development of subsequent neurodegenerative disorders, including Alzheimer's dementia and Parkinson's disease. Identification of biomarkers known to be associated with neurodegeneration in patients with PTSD would shed light on the pathophysiological mechanisms linking these disorders and would also help in the development of preventive strategies for neurodegenerative disorders in PTSD. With this background,

INTRODUCTION: Over the last four decades, human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) infection has been a major public health concern. It is acknowledged that an effective vaccine remains the best hope for eliminating the HIV-1 pandemic. The prophylaxis of HIV-1 infection remains a central theme because of the absence of an available HIV-1 vaccine. The inability of conventional delivery strategies to induce potent immunity is a crucial task to overcome and ultimately lead to a major obstacle in HIV-1 vaccine research.
AREAS COVERED: The literature search was conducted in the following databa

Dermatomyositis (DM) is an autoimmune disease that is classified as a type of idiopathic inflammatory myopathy, which affects human skin and muscles. The most common clinical symptoms of DM are muscle weakness, rash, and scaly skin. There is currently no cure for DM. Genetic factors are known to play a pivotal role in DM progression, but few have utilized this information geared toward drug discovery for the disease. Here, we exploited genomic variation associated with DM and integrated this with genomic and bioinformatic analyses to discover new drug candidates. We first integrated genome-wid

To explore the genetic characteristics of systemic juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (sJRA) and type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1D). The microarray data of sJRA and T1D from Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) were analyzed. The shared differentially expressed genes (SDEGs) were identified by the Meta-analysis, and genes of extracellular proteins were identified. Then, transcription factors (TFs) and their target genes in SDEGs were obtained by comparing databases from HumanTFDB, and hTFtarget. After that, functional enrichment analyses of the previously identified gene sets were performed by metascape tool.

Objective: Accumulated evidence has implicated that brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) gene polymorphisms play a role in the etiology of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). A single nucleotide polymorphism in the coding exon of the BDNF gene at position 66, Val66Met (rs6265), is found to be associated with OCD in different populations, but results linking Val66Met with OCD have been inconsistent and inconclusive. In our study we performed a meta-analysis to further examine whether rs6265 genetic variants are involved in the etiology of OCD. Methods: By searching databases, relevant case

BACKGROUND: The insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF1) gene is located within the myopia-associated MYP3 interval, which suggests it may play an important role in the progression of myopia. However, the association between IGF1 SNPs and any myopia is rarely reported.
METHODS: A comprehensive literature search was conducted on studies published up to July 22, 2021 in PubMed, EMBASE, CBM, COCHRANE, CNKI, WANFANG and VIP databases. Odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated for single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) that have been evaluated in at least three studies.

Enhancing pregnancy health is known to improve the mother's and offspring's life-long well-being. The maternal environment, encompassing genetic factors, impacts of social determinants, the nutritional/metabolic milieu, and infections and inflammation, have immediate consequences for the in utero development of the fetus and long-term programming into childhood and adulthood. Moreover, adverse pregnancy outcomes such as preterm birth or preeclampsia, often attributed to the maternal environmental factors listed above, have been associated with poor maternal cardiometabolic health after pregnan
