[Poliomyelitis in Landsteiner's time and today].

At a meeting of the Royal and Imperial Association of Physicians in Vienna on December 18, 1908 Dr. Karl Landsteiner reported on the success … ndustrial countries as a result of vaccination. Today, poliomyelitis is still an enormous threat in developing countries. Together with many national and international institutions the WHO fights this situation very hard by means of vaccination campaigns. The incidence of side effects and insufficient reactions is small with both vaccines. New techniques in the field …

Do the benefits of breastfeeding outweigh the risk of postnatal transmission of HIV via breastmilk?

Conflicting recommendations have been offered about whether HIV+ mothers should breastfeed. Since there is a strong precedent for US infant feeding practices to be imitated in developing countries, a model was constructed to estimate infant mortality if the CDC admonition for HIV+ mothers not to breastfeed were upheld in less developed settings. Estimates are given for infant mortality in the presence and absence of breastfeeding across several baseline levels of infant mortality and across several theoretical rates of transmission through breastfeeding. The infant mortality associated with HI…

The epidemiology of sexually transmitted diseases in Africa and Latin America.

We review some aspects of the epidemiology of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) in the developing countries of Africa and Latin America. Apart from their elevated prevalence, they are responsible for important morbidity in mother and child. Stillbirth, premature delivery, conjunctivitis, and respiratory tract morbidity of the neonate are frequently caused by STDs. Sequelae in adult women include pelvic inflammatory disease, ectopic pregnancy, and infertility. The emergence of antimicrobial resistance has complicated the picture in recent times. Genital ulcer disease is very common in develo…

Epidemiology of sexually transmitted diseases: the global picture.

Sexually transmitted diseases (STD) are now the commonest group of notifiable infectious diseases in most countries, particularly in the age group of 15 to 50 years and in infants. Their control is important considering the high incidence of acute infections, complications and sequelae, their socioeconomic impact, and their role in increasing transmission of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). The worldwide incidence of major bacterial and viral STD is estimated at over 125 million cases yearly. STD are hyperendemic in many developing countries. In industrialized countries, the bacterial S…

Radioisotope investigations of haematological disorders (excluding sickle cell disease) in Sierra Leone.

Using 51Cr, 125I, and 59Fe, red cell survival, blood volumes and certain aspects of iron metabolism were investigated in Sierra Leoneans referred for further evaluation of various blood disorders. The data provided clarification of the nature of the anaemia in some patients and demonstrated the haemolytic and erythropoietic role of the spleen in others with splenomegaly. Blood volume values in healthy individuals were found to be similar to those of normal subjects in other populations. Increased plasma volumes commonly described in non-African patients with anaemia and splenomegaly were also

Cystic fibrosis in Saudi Arabia.

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is generally believed to be rare or nonexistent in Saudi Arabia. The aim of this report is to document the occurrence of CF in Saudi Arabia. Thirteen Saudi children were diagnosed as having CF, evidenced by typical clinical features and elevated sweat chloride concentrations (greater than 60 mmol/l). Duration of symptoms prior to diagnosis varied from 1 month-5 years (mean 23 months). The main clinical manifestations of the children were abdominal distention, failure to thrive, steatorrhoea, hepatomegaly, rectal prolapse and recurrent respiratory infections, often with Pse

Morbidity pattern in children below three years attending a rural health centre in Haryana.

Morbidity pattern of children below three years attending a rural health centre was studied prospectively for one year. All children were first examined by a doctor and the diagnoses made were compiled and analysed. The common morbidity conditions found were pyoderma (23.65%), respiratory infection (21.18%), diarrhea (20.05%), unspecified fever (11.75%), ear infection (6.58%) and eye infection (5.46%). The maximum episodes of morbidity were recorded in summer season (39.22%) followed by rainy (31.36%) and winter season (30.16%).

[Genital schistosomiasis--diagnosis and therapy].

The authors describe prevalence, diagnosis and treatment of genital schistosomiasis. Schistosomiasis is one of the most common parasitoses in tropical and subtropical developing countries. Genital schistosomiasis is caused by Schistosoma haematobium. By microscopical examination of abradates, operation material and coni schistosoma eggs could be detected in 29.2 per cent of all cases.

The right to prevention, early detection and medical rehabilitation under national and international aspects.

The importance of prevention and early detection and rehabilitation has been recognized and emphasized at national and international level f … and documented in recent years and can serve as guidelines for further improvements. Measles in Ghana--1973-1982.

Admissions of children with measles constituted 8.8% of all admissions to the paediatric medical service of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Accra, over the ten-year-period 1973-1982. Measles remains endemic in urban Accra as in the towns of other developing nations. The peak of admissions occurred in the age range seven to 12 months. Complications were frequent, with a high mortality (16.86%). Bronchopneumonia, the commonest complication (63.9%) was also the commonest cause of death in 51.5% of cases. Comparative national case-mortality rates were, however, surprisingly low and should be accep

Selective primary health care: strategies for control of disease in the developing world. V. Leprosy.

Leprosy afflicts 10-15 million people in the world, primarily in tropical and subtropical developing countries. In areas endemic for leprosy, the incidence may reach four to six cases per 1,000 population, and the prevalence of the disease frequently exceeds 10 per 1,000 population in parts of Africa and Asia. While these figures are not high in relation to those for other tropical diseases, many developing countries consider leprosy a major health problem because a significant proportion of cases result in deformity and subsequent social stigmatization. Leprosy comprises a wide spectrum of cl…

[Incidence of bacterial diseases (author's transl)].

Bacterial diseases world incidence figure is not easily reckoned on account of the lack of reliability from original notifications. However the present situation is characterized by: --the regression of diseases under International Health Regulations; --the great diffusion of sexually transmitted diseases; --the keeping-up of the activity of digestive or respiratory transmitted disease, including tuberculosis.

Recent advances in rheumatic fever control and future prospect: a WHO memorandum.

The public health importance of rheumatic fever is not directly related to its prevalence but is a complex function of many factors, such as incidence, prevalence, mortality, disability, and cost to the community, all relative to the importance of other diseases. Although the prevalence is low and still decreasing in developed countries, rheumatic fever is the commonest form of heart disease in many developing countries. Advances in the bacterial and serological characterization of group A streptococci are reviewed in this Memorandum, with emphasis on the nature of the structural elements of t…

Medical supervision for contraception: too little or too much?

The need to provide medical supervision in contraceptive services is reviewed in the context of the situation existing in developing nations. The author contends that less rather than more medical supervision can be justified if one compares the relatively low incidence of complications from modern contraception with the inordinately high maternal death rates from pregnancy and its complications in these same countries.
