Machine learning-based predictive model for post-stroke dementia.

BACKGROUND: Post-stroke dementia (PSD), a common complication, diminishes rehabilitation efficacy and affects disease prognosis in stroke patients. Many factors may be related to PSD, including demographic, comorbidities, and examination characteristics. However, most existing methods are qualitative evaluations of independent factors, which ignore the interaction amongst various factors. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to explore the applicability of machine learning (ML) methods for predicting PSD. METHODS: 9 acceptable features were screened out by the Spearman correlation analysis

Combining Multistaged Filters and Modified Segmentation Network for Improving Lung Nodules Classification.

Advancements in computational technology have led to a shift towards automated detection processes in lung cancer screening, particularly through nodule segmentation techniques. These techniques employ thresholding to distinguish between soft and firm tissues, including cancerous nodules. The challenge of accurately detecting nodules close to critical lung structures such as blood vessels, bronchi, and the pleura highlights the necessity for more sophisticated methods to enhance diagnostic accuracy. This paper proposed combined processing filters for data preparation before using one of the mo

Development and validation of a machine learning-based model to assess probability of systemic inflammatory response syndrome in patients with severe multiple traumas.

BACKGROUND: Systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) is a predictor of serious infectious complications, organ failure, and death in patients with severe polytrauma and is one of the reasons for delaying early total surgical treatment. To determine the risk of SIRS within 24 h after hospitalization, we developed six machine learning models. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Using retrospective data about the patient, the nature of the injury, the results of general and standard biochemical blood tests, and coagulation tests, six models were developed: decision tree, random forest, logistic regress

Influence of Transcutaneous Vagus Nerve Stimulation on Motor Planning: A Resting-State and Task-State EEG Study.

Transcutaneous vagus nerve stimulation (tVNS) shows a potential regulatory role for motor planning. Still, existing research mainly focuses on behavioral studies, and the neural modulation mechanism needs to be clarified. Therefore, we designed a multi-condition (active or sham, pre or under, difficult or easy, left-hand or right-hand) motor planning experiment to explore the effect of online tVNS (i.e., tVNS and tasks synchronized). Twenty-eight subjects were recruited and randomly assigned to active and sham groups. Both groups performed the same tasks in the experiment and separately collec

Development of transient ischemic attack risk prediction model suitable for initializing a learning health system unit using electronic medical records.

BACKGROUND: Patients with transient ischemic attack (TIA) face a significantly increased risk of stroke. However, TIA screening and early detection rates are low, especially in developing countries. This study aims to develop an inclusive and practical TIA risk prediction model using machine learning (ML) that performs well in both hospital and resource-limited clinic settings. This model is essential for initiating the first ML-enabled learning health system (LHS) unit designed for routine and equitable TIA screening and early detection across broad populations. METHODS: Employing a novel pr

Modified multiscale Renyi distribution entropy for short-term heart rate variability analysis.

BACKGROUND: Multiscale sample entropy (MSE) is a prevalent complexity metric to characterize a time series and has been extensively applied to the physiological signal analysis. However, for a short-term time series, the likelihood of identifying comparable subsequences decreases, leading to higher variability in the Sample Entropy (SampEn) calculation. Additionally, as the scale factor increases in the MSE calculation, the coarse-graining process further shortens the time series. Consequently, each newly generated time series at a larger scale consists of fewer data points, potentially result

MLVICX: Multi-Level Variance-Covariance Exploration for Chest X-Ray Self-Supervised Representation Learning.

Self-supervised learning (SSL) reduces the need for manual annotation in deep learning models for medical image analysis. By learning the representations from unablelled data, self-supervised models perform well on tasks that require little to no fine-tuning. However, for medical images, like chest X-rays, characterised by complex anatomical structures and diverse clinical conditions, a need arises for representation learning techniques that encode fine-grained details while preserving the broader contextual information. In this context, we introduce MLVICX (Multi-Level Variance-Covariance Exp

Bridging the Gap Between Vitiligo Segmentation and Clinical Scores.

Quantitative evaluation of vitiligo is crucial for assessing treatment response. Dermatologists evaluate vitiligo regularly to adjust their treatment plans, which requires extra work. Furthermore, the evaluations may not be objective due to inter- and intra-assessor variability. Though automatic vitiligo segmentation methods provide an objective evaluation, previous methods mainly focus on patch-wise images, and their results cannot be translated into clinical scores for treatment adjustment. Thus, full-body vitiligo segmentation needs to be developed for recording vitiligo changes in differen

Public Perceptions of Treating Opioid Use Disorder With Deep Brain Stimulation: Comment Analysis Study.

BACKGROUND: The number of opioid-related deaths in the United States has more than tripled over the past 7 years, with a steep increase beginning at the same time as the COVID-19 pandemic. There is an urgent need for novel treatment options that can help alleviate the individual and social effects of refractory opioid use disorder (OUD). Deep brain stimulation (DBS), an intervention that involves implanting electrodes in the brain to deliver electrical impulses, is one potential treatment. Currently in clinical trials for many psychiatric conditions, including OUD, DBS's use for psychiatric in

Insula-Medial Prefrontal Cortex Functional Connectivity Modulated by Transcutaneous Auricular Vagus Nerve Stimulation: An fMRI Study.

Transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) is an emerging neuromodulation technology that has been reported to be beneficial in the treatment of diseases by several studies, but its exact mechanism of action is still unclear. It has been demonstrated that taVNS can influence interoceptive signals. Notably, the processing of interoceptive signals is directly related to many diseases, such as depression, anxiety, and insomnia. The insula and the medial prefrontal cortex (MPFC) communicate during the bottom-up transmission of taVNS-induced signals, and both play a role in interocept

Attention-Based Deep Learning Model for Prediction of Major Adverse Cardiovascular Events in Peritoneal Dialysis Patients.

Major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) encompass pivotal cardiovascular outcomes such as myocardial infarction, unstable angina, and cardiovascular-related mortality. Patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis (PD) exhibit specific cardiovascular risk factors during the treatment, which can escalate the likelihood of cardiovascular events. Hence, the prediction and key factor analysis of MACE have assumed paramount significance for peritoneal dialysis patients. Current pathological methodologies for prognosis prediction are not only costly but also cumbersome in effectively processing electro

Characterizing the Contribution of Dependent Features in XAI Methods.

Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) provides tools to help understanding how AI models work and reach a particular decision or outcome. It helps to increase the interpretability of models and makes them more trustworthy and transparent. In this context, many XAI methods have been proposed to make black-box and complex models more digestible from a human perspective. However, one of the main issues that XAI methods have to face especially when dealing with a high number of features is the presence of multicollinearity, which casts shadows on the robustness of the XAI outcomes, such as the

Shared decision-making endorses intention to follow through treatment or vaccination recommendations: a multi-method survey study among older adults.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have shown that shared decision-making (SDM) between a practitioner and a patient strengthens the ideal of treatment adherence. This study employed a multi-method approach to SDM in healthcare to reinforce the theoretical and methodological grounds of this argument. As the study design, self-reported survey items and experimental vignettes were combined in one electronic questionnaire. This technique aimed to analyze the effects of previous experiences and the current preferences regarding SDM on the intentions to follow-through with the medical recommendations. M

This work tackles the automatic prediction of grasping intention of humans observing their environment. Our target application is the assistance to people with motor disabilities and potential cognitive impairments, using assistive robotics. Our proposal leverages the analysis of human attention captured in the form of gaze fixations recorded by an eye-tracker on the first person video, as the anticipation of prehension actions is a well studied and well known phenomenon. We propose a multi-task system that simultaneously addresses the prediction of human attention in the near future, and the

FBENet: Feature-Level Boosting Ensemble Network for Hashimoto's Thyroiditis Ultrasound Image Classification.

Distinguishing Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT) lesions from ordinary thyroid tissues is difficult with ultrasound images. Challenges in achieving high performance of HT ultrasound image classification include the low resolution, blurred features and large area of irrelevant noise. To address these problems, we propose a Feature-level Boosting Ensemble Network (FBENet) for HT ultrasound image classification. Specifically, to capture the features of suspicious HT lesions efficiently, an Ensemble Feature Boosting Module (EFBM) is introduced into the feature-level ensemble to boost the blurred featur
