Endocrine disorders in septo-optic dysplasia (De Morsier syndrome)--evaluation and follow up of 18 patients.

UNLABELLED: Septo-optic dysplasia (SOD) is characterized by hypoplasia of the optic nerve, various types of forebrain defects and hormonal deficiencies. We have studied the clinical and endocrinological characteristics of 18 such patients retrospectively to: (1) better define the endocrine abnormalities in children with SOD; and (2) to find approaches for the interdisciplinary long-term care of children with SOD. The children were seen at the Children's Hospital of the University of Munich from 1976 to 1992 (8 boys, 10 girls; age at initial presentation: 1 day-13 years of age, mean 1.9 years).

Cancer-Related Psychological Distress over the Past Decade: A Bibliometric Analysis of Research Trends, Hotspots, and Emerging Areas.

BACKGROUND: Cancer-related psychological distress is a major concern in comprehensive oncology care because it substantially impairs patients' quality of life and may adversely affect treatment adherence, outcomes, and prognosis. Over the past decade, research in this field has expanded rapidly; however, the overall knowledge structure, global research patterns, major contributors, and emerging hotspots remain insufficiently characterized. A bibliometric analysis is therefore needed to systematically map the development of cancer-related psychological distress research and identify evolving di

Establishing a clinician-prioritized pediatric urology clinical research agenda in the United States.

INTRODUCTION: Most studies in pediatric urology have been limited to single-center retrospective designs with inherent limitations. Ideally, pediatric urology research would be collaborative, cross-institutional, and guided by shared priorities supported by funding mechanisms that enable rigorous study designs. OBJECTIVE: To promote collaborative research in the highest-priority areas of the field, we aimed to engage pediatric urologists to establish a shared clinical research agenda through a structured, consensus-based process. STUDY DESIGN: We employed a 3-phase approach. First, we survey

Fracture Healing and Commonly Co-Prescribed Medications: Orthopedic Implications in Multimorbid Patients: A Narrative Review.

Fracture healing is a biologically complex process influenced not only by mechanical stability and patient-related factors but also by systemic medications commonly prescribed in orthopedic populations. In contemporary practice, many adults sustaining fractures are treated within a broader context of multimorbidity and polypharmacy, raising clinical questions about how commonly co-prescribed drug classes may intersect with biological pathways relevant to bone repair and recovery. However, evidence addressing these relationships remains dispersed across disciplines and is characterized by heter

In the Light of Healthcare Professionals: Beliefs About Chronic Low Back Pain.

Background and Objectives: Chronic low back pain (CLBP) is a prevalent condition that impairs quality of life, functionality, and work productivity. While most acute episodes of back pain resolve, 4-25% become chronic due to factors such as high pain intensity, psychological distress, and maladaptive behaviors. Nonspecific CLBP is best understood through the biopsychosocial model, encompassing biological, psychological, and social influences, including kinesiophobia. Management relies on physical activity, pain education, and psychological interventions, with therapist knowledge and attitudes

Artificial Intelligence in Routine IVF Practice.

Background: Artificial Intelligence (AI) has emerged as a transformative tool in in vitro fertilization (IVF) as it has done in other sectors. In IVF, AI offers advancements in embryo selection, treatment personalization, and outcome prediction. It does so by leveraging deep learning and computer vision, as well as AI-driven platforms such as ERICA, iDAScore, and IVY where the goal is to address the limitations of traditional embryo assessment. Key amongst them are the issues of subjectivity, labor intensity, and limited predictive power. Despite rapid technological progress, the integration o

Low-dose naltrexone for post-COVID fatigue syndrome: a study protocol for a double-blind, randomised trial in British Columbia.

INTRODUCTION: A significant proportion of individuals suffering from post COVID-19 condition (PCC, also known as long COVID) can present with persistent, disabling fatigue similar to myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) and post-viral fatigue syndromes. There remains no clear pharmacological therapy for patients with this subtype of PCC, which can be referred to as post-COVID fatigue syndrome (PCFS). A low dose of the opioid antagonist naltrexone (ie, low-dose naltrexone (LDN)) has emerged as an off-label treatment for treating fatigue and other symptoms in PCC. However,

Consensus Panel Recommendations for the Pharmacological Management of Pregnant Women with Depressive Disorders.

INTRODUCTION: The initiative of a consensus on the topic of antidepressant and anxiolytic drug use in pregnancy is developing in an area of clinical uncertainty. Although many studies have been published in recent years, there is still a paucity of authoritative evidence-based indications useful for guiding the prescription of these drugs during pregnancy, and the data from the literature are complex and require expert judgment to draw clear conclusions. METHODS: For the elaboration of the consensus, we have involved the scientific societies of the sector, namely, the Italian Society of Toxic

Mortality and morbidity in the city of Bern, Switzerland, 1805-1815 with special emphasis on infant, child and maternal deaths.

This article contributes to the research on demographics and public health of urban populations of preindustrial Europe. The key source is a burial register that contains information on the deceased, such as age and sex, residence and cause of death. This register is one of the earliest compilations of data sets of individuals with this high degree of completeness and consistency. Critical assessment of the register's origin, formation and upkeep promises high validity and reliability. Between 1805 and 1815, 4,390 deceased inhabitants were registered. Information concerning these individuals p

[Health status and medical care accessibility of single, homeless persons].

The homeless population in Germany is continually increasing. Featuring prominently among those on the increase are women, young persons and homeless people from East Germany. Studies of the health of homeless individuals in recent years show that indices of illness are far higher for many disorders than for comparable groups who are housed. One result from a recent study by the University of Mainz (1994) was that more than 90% of homeless people urgently need medical treatment. According this research, the main health problems of the homeless are: cardiac disease (hypertension, CAD) (52.5%),

A Vocal Fatigue Scale for Chinese University Music Teachers: Development and Psychometric Validation.

Vocal fatigue (VF) is a common occupational health issue among university music teachers, whose work can involve specialized speaking and vocal-demonstration demands. Existing vocal-fatigue measures provide useful general assessment, but may not fully represent the task-specific demands of Chinese university music teaching. This study aimed to develop and provide initial psychometric validation of a contextually relevant Vocal Fatigue Scale for Chinese university music teachers. A mixed-methods sequential exploratory design was used, involving item generation, pilot testing, exploratory factor
