Enhanced NMDA conductance can account for epileptiform activity induced by low Mg2+ in the rat hippocampal slice.

1. Why does lowering extracellular Mg2+ cause synchronous neuronal bursts and after-discharges? To address this question, a computer model of the CA3 region was constructed with 1000 pyramidal neurones and 100 inhibitory neurones. Pyramidal neurones were multicompartmental and contained five ionic conductances, distributed non-uniformly on the membrane. In parallel, experiments were performed on rat hippocampal slices perfused in solutions without added Mg2+. 2. Model neurones were interconnected randomly as follows. Recurrent excitatory connections between pyramidal neurones, and from pyramid

[Gestosis, thrombophilia and pulmonary embolism in a primipara with twin pregnancy].

This is a case report on a course of gemini-pregnancy complicated by gestosis, recurrent submassive pulmonary embolism and discordant growth of the hypotrophic twins. It is concluded from this report that: 1. the AT-III-deficiency in gestosis can be caused by loss and consumption; 2. due to decrease below a critical AT-III-level the coagulation-fibrinolysis system tends to decompensate, reflected in a disseminated intravascular coagulation and/or a pulmonary embolism. The tendency consists particularly in immobilisation and stasis; 3. the daily determination of AT III, better of TAT-complex an

Development of a villi-like micropatterned porous membrane for intestinal magnesium and calcium uptake studies.

Intestinal enterocytes are key players in the absorption of magnesium (Mg2+) and calcium (Ca2+). Understanding the exact molecular mechanisms by which their absorption behavior is regulated could greatly improve treatment strategies for stimulating intestinal absorption in diseases with Mg2+ and/or Ca2+ deficiency. However, such studies are hampered by the lack of in vitro intestinal cell models mimicking the mechanical and physiological properties of the gut. In this study we develop an in vitro gut model based on porous micropatterned membranes with villi-like surface topography and mechanic

MitraClip intervention for Sheehan syndrome complicated by dilated cardiomyopathy and valvular insufficiency: a case report and literature review.

INTRODUCTION: Sheehan syndrome (SS) is a form of hypopituitarism caused by severe postpartum hemorrhage. It leads to premature dysfunction of the target organs affected by various hormone deficiencies, resulting in a range of clinical manifestations. The coexistence of SS and dilated cardiomyopathy is rare, and symptomatic treatment remains the main treatment approach. Here, we describe a case in which a MitraClip procedure was used to treat SS-associated cardiac insufficiency. CASE REPORT: A 50-year-old woman with a history of SS and dilated cardiomyopathy was admitted to the hospital owing

Nutritional interventions to support acute mTBI recovery.

UNLABELLED: When mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) occurs following an impact on the head or body, the brain is disrupted leading to a series of metabolic events that may alter the brain's ability to function and repair itself. These changes may place increased nutritional demands on the body. Little is known on whether nutritional interventions are safe for patients to implement post mTBI and whether they may improve recovery outcomes. To address this knowledge gap, we conducted a systematic review to determine what nutritional interventions have been prescribed to humans diagnosed with mTBI

Maternal nutritional risk factors for pre-eclampsia incidence: findings from a narrative scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Pre-eclampsia is a leading cause of maternal mortality and morbidity that involves pregnancy-related stressors on the maternal cardiovascular and metabolic systems. As nutrition is important to support optimal development of the placenta and for the developing fetus, maternal diets may play a role in preventing pre-eclampsia. The purpose of this scoping review is to map the maternal nutritional deficiencies and imbalances associated with pre-eclampsia incidence and discuss evidence consistency and linkages with current understandings of the etiology of pre-eclampsia. METHODS: A na

Low phytic acid Crops: Observations Based On Four Decades of Research.

The low phytic acid (lpa), or "low-phytate" seed trait can provide numerous potential benefits to the nutritional quality of foods and feeds and to the sustainability of agricultural production. Major benefits include enhanced phosphorus (P) management contributing to enhanced sustainability in non-ruminant (poultry, swine, and fish) production; reduced environmental impact due to reduced waste P in non-ruminant production; enhanced "global" bioavailability of minerals (iron, zinc, calcium, magnesium) for both humans and non-ruminant animals; enhancement of animal health, productivity and the

The impact of dietary magnesium restriction on magnesiotropic and calciotropic genes.

BACKGROUND: Magnesium (Mg(2+)) is an essential electrolyte with important physiological functions. Consequently, hypomagnesaemia, an electrolyte disorder frequently diagnosed in critically ill patients, can have life-threatening consequences. The kidney plays a central role in the regulation of the Mg(2+) balance. The present study investigated the molecular consequences of dietary Mg(2+) restriction on renal Mg(2+) transporters. METHODS: Two groups of 10 mice were fed a Mg(2+)-deficient diet or a Mg(2+)-enriched diet for 2 weeks. Serum and urine electrolyte concentrations were assayed. Next,

A comparative evaluation of the macronutrient and micronutrient profiles of soybean-fortified gari and tapioca.

BACKGROUND: Gari and tapioca are storage-cupboard convenience foods obtained from the tubers of cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz). They are important staples in Nigeria and many African countries where malnutrition is a major problem. Tapioca is a quick-cooking food made from partly gelatinized starch and gari is a fermented, roasted, granular food made from cassava pulp. OBJECTIVE: Gari and tapioca are nutritionally inferior and need to be fortified. This paper reports the macro- and micronutrient profiles of soybean-fortified gari and tapioca. METHODS: Gari and tapioca were fortified with

A disproportionality analysis of adverse events associated with loop diuretics in the FDA Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS).

BACKGROUND: Loop diuretics, including furosemide, torsemide, and bumetanide, are widely utilized in the management of volume overload-related conditions. Although previous studies have extensively documented risks such as electrolyte imbalances, ototoxicity, and nephrotoxicity, real-world evidence regarding novel or underrecognized adverse event (AE) signals remains limited and underexplored. METHODS: Using data from the Food and Drug Administration Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) from the first quarter of 2004 to the third quarter of 2024, we conducted a disproportionality analysis in

Element status and inflammatory response in dogs with pyometra.

BACKGROUND: Pyometra is a life-threatening disease characterized by persistent endometrial inflammation and bacterial colonization, which occur through enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidant mechanisms. Minerals and trace elements have effective roles in numerous metal-dependent enzyme and protein activities. The aim of this study is to evaluate the monocyte to lymphocyte ratio (MLR), neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR), white blood cell (WBC), C-reactive protein (CRP), albumin (ALB), progesterone (P4) levels, serum and uterine tissue iron (Fe), copper (Cu), selenium (Se), zinc (Zn), magnesi

Denosumab-induced hypocalcemia post bariatric surgery-a severe and protracted course: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Denosumab is known to cause abnormalities in calcium homeostasis. Most of such cases have been described in patients with underlying chronic kidney disease or severe vitamin D deficiency. Previous bariatric surgery could also contribute to hypocalcemia and deterioration in bone health. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of a 61-year-old Malay female with worsening bilateral limb weakness, paresthesia, and severe carpopedal spasm a week after receiving subcutaneous denosumab for osteoporosis. She had a history of gastric bypass surgery 20 years ago. Post gastric bypass surgery, s

Essential metals in health and disease.

In total, twenty elements appear to be essential for the correct functioning of the human body, half of which are metals and half are non-metals. Among those metals that are currently considered to be essential for normal biological functioning are four main group elements, sodium (Na), potassium (K), magnesium (Mg), and calcium (Ca), and six d-block transition metal elements, manganese (Mn), iron (Fe), cobalt (Co), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn) and molybdenum (Mo). Cells have developed various metallo-regulatory mechanisms for maintaining a necessary homeostasis of metal-ions for diverse cellular pr

Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension via Indo-Mediterranean Foods, May Be Superior to DASH Diet Intervention.

Western-type diet with high salt and sugar, sedentary behavior, obesity, tobacco and alcoholism are important risk factors for hypertension. This review aims to highlight the role of western diet-induced oxidative stress and inflammation in the pathogenesis of hypertension and the role of various types of diets in its prevention with reference to dietary approaches to stop hypertension (DASH) diet. It seems that it is crucial to alter the western type of diet because such diets can also predispose all CVDs. Western diet-induced oxidative stress is characterized by excessive production of react

Omega-3 fatty acid status in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

Lower levels of long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids, particularly omega-3 fatty acids, in blood have repeatedly been associated with a variety of behavioral disorders including attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The exact nature of this relationship is not yet clear. We have studied children with ADHD who exhibited skin and thirst symptoms classically associated with essential fatty acid (EFA) deficiency, altered plasma and red blood cell fatty acid profiles, and dietary intake patterns that do not differ significantly from controls. This led us to focus on a potential metabol

[Enteral nutrition in patients with ileostomies and jejunostomies].

Jejuno- and ileostomy are common surgical procedures. Due to shortening of effective bowel length intestinal failure, or short bowel syndrome develops. Degree of intestinal failure depends upon 1. resection length, 2. resection location, 3. function of the bowel remnant, stomach, pancreas and liver, 4. adaptive capabilities of the bowel remnant and 5. the disease that was cause of the surgery. In majority of these patients adequate nutrition can be achieved using enteral nutrition. Water and mineral absorption differs between jejunum and ileum. Jejunal mucosa is permeable to sodium and water,

Applying Liebig's law of the minimum for variable rate soybean seeding based on CEC-nutrient fertility index.

This study investigated the impact of spatial variability in soil Cation Exchange Capacity and key macronutrients on soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merril) population establishment and yield across two distinct fields. Field A presented Magnesium as the primary concern due to low inherent levels and potential antagonism from high Calcium and Potassium concentrations. Field B was characterized by a significant Calcium deficiency. Recognizing these site-specific limiting nutrients, a variable rate seeding approach was implemented in both fields. A fertility index, derived by multiplying soil CEC valu
