BACKGROUND: Identification of nodal metastases in invasive lobular carcinoma (ILC) is difficult. Sentinel node (SN) biopsy offers a potential advantage. This study reports the feasibility of SN identification and predictors of SN metastases for ILC.
METHODS: All cases of ILC undergoing sentinel lymphadenectomy between October 1991 and May 2001 were evaluated. Patients enrolled in ACOSOG Z0010/Z0011 were excluded. Presentation, surgical treatment, tumor characteristics, and prognostic factors were analyzed for statistical significance.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the value of preoperative lymphoscintigraphy, and to evaluate the validity and feasibility of the sentinel node (SN) procedure in vulvar carcinoma.
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective clinical and histopathological review of 77 patients with invasive squamous cell carcinoma in vulva who were treated at Karolinska University Hospital Stockholm, Sweden, from 2000 to 2007. The patients underwent SN mapping preoperatively with radioactive tracer and blue dye (n=60) or only blue dye (n=17). This article reviews the main aspects of the histopathology of cutaneous melanoma with emphasis on recent advances in the morphological evaluation of these lesions. The limitations of morphology for the "so called" borderline lesions are briefly discussed, with a list of diagnostic criteria to help predict behavior for these challenging lesions. Claudin-3 is a tight junction protein that has often been associated with the progression and metastasis of various tumors.
