Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever in pregnancy: clinical outcomes and public health implications.

Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever (CCHF) is the most widespread tick-borne viral disease of humans, with major public-health implications across western China, South Asia, the Middle East, south-eastern Europe, and Africa. Although uncommon, infection during pregnancy is often severe and associated with high maternal and fetal mortality. This mini review synthesizes 38 documented cases of CCHF in pregnancy to identify consistent patterns in clinical presentation, outcomes, and management. Maternal survival was recorded in 68% of cases, whereas fetal or neonatal survival was reported in only 39%

Aging as a Continuation of Development: A Hypothesis and Framework.

Prevailing theories of cognitive aging depict late life as a period of compensatory decline-an effort to preserve performance despite progressive neural deterioration. We propose instead that aging represents a continuation of development: a genetically conserved, adaptive reorganization of memory systems that parallels the brain's earlier-life transitions. Drawing on convergent molecular, network, behavioral, and comparative evidence, we argue that the well-documented decline in episodic-memory precision reflects a deliberate recalibration of plasticity from hippocampal to cortical circuits,

A Review of SERS-Based Bacterial Detection from Nanomaterials to Integrated Clinical Platforms.

Pathogenic bacterial infections remain a persistent global public health crisis. However, traditional clinical detection methods-such as culture-based assays and polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-are often time-consuming and labor-intensive, and they lack sufficient sensitivity for low-abundance pathogens, hindering rapid point-of-care diagnosis. With label-free, ultra-sensitive molecular fingerprinting, Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS) has emerged as a powerful tool for rapid pathogen identification. This review summarizes the evolution of SERS-based bacterial detection from fundamental

Integrating tuberculosis and lung health services in India: Opportunities and challenges.

India bears one of the highest global burdens of tuberculosis (TB) and chronic respiratory diseases (CRDs), including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, bronchiectasis, and post-tuberculosis lung disease (PTLD). Traditionally, TB and chronic respiratory diseases have been managed through vertical and fragmented healthcare programmes, leading to inefficiencies, delayed diagnosis, and poor continuity of care. Increasing evidence demonstrates strong epidemiological, biological, environmental, and socioeconomic intersections between TB and other lung diseases. Shared risk factor

Biomimetic Scaffold-Based 3D Models for Decoding Cancer Biology and Advancing Therapy.

While conventional two-dimensional (2D) cultures and animal models remain essential tools, they frequently fail to recapitulate the three-dimensional (3D) architecture, biomechanical cues, and spatial complexity of human tumors, thereby limiting their translational relevance. To address these limitations, scaffold-based 3D culture systems have emerged as powerful platforms that leverage engineered biomaterials to mimic key physical and biochemical properties of the native tumor microenvironment (TME). This review systematically examines the latest advances in biomimetic scaffold-based 3D tumor

Development of a Flat-Sheet Membrane Gas Exchange Unit for Oxygen Control in Microfluidic Systems.

Precise control of dissolved oxygen is essential for reproducing physiologically relevant conditions in microfluidic cell culture systems. Here, we present a standalone, polydimethylsiloxane-free gas exchange unit (GEU) which enables controlled oxygenation and deoxygenation of perfused liquids and is suitable for integration with existing microfluidic platforms. The GEU employs a flat-sheet membrane contactor design to achieve efficient gas-liquid mass transfer while remaining independent of the downstream device. Oxygen transfer was experimentally characterised using optical oxygen sensors un

Circulating tumour cells for guiding antibody‒drug conjugate therapy: Role of artificial intelligence.

Antibody‒drug conjugates (ADCs) represent a major advance in precision oncology, yet their effectiveness depends critically on adequate target antigen expression. Tumour heterogeneity and dynamic antigen expression during treatment pose major challenges for conventional tissue biopsies used in patient selection. Liquid biopsy components such as circulating tumour cells (CTCs) enable real-time, minimally invasive monitoring of tumour burden, molecular characteristics and target antigen status. This review evaluates the potential of CTC analysis to overcome the key challenges in ADC therapy, inc

Artificial intelligence, data sharing, and privacy for retinal imaging under Brazilian Data Protection Law.

The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare has revolutionized various medical domains, including radiology, intensive care, and ophthalmology. However, the increasing reliance on AI-driven systems raises concerns about bias, particularly when models are trained on non-representative data, leading to skewed outcomes that disproportionately affect minority groups. Addressing bias is essential for ensuring equitable healthcare, necessitating the development and validation of AI models within specific populations. This viewpoint paper explores the critical role of data in AI dev

CoIr/Pt Multilayers Enabling Physical Unclonable Function via Domain Wall Motion.

Spintronics devices offer exceptional long-term reliability and compatibility with complementary metal-oxide semiconductors, making them promising for next-generation electronics. However, realizing their full potential requires new materials and device concepts that operate at low energy. In this work, we introduce a CoIr/Pt heterostructure that leverages the properties of CoIr, which exhibits negative magnetocrystalline anisotropy. By interfacing CoIr with Pt layers, we successfully invert its anisotropy, achieving a perpendicular magnetization with a low effective magnetic anisotropy energy
