Studying mandarin tone sandhi in interaction.

The Mandarin low tone (T3) undergoes an alteration, third tone sandhi, when followed by another T3. The resulting F0 is superficially the sa … ask performance showed clear evidence of sandhi-induced ambiguity. Examination of accuracy and tone acoustics suggested that pairs reduced sandhi-induced ambiguity primarily by lowering the F0 of T3 towards the end of its trajectory. We interpret this as avoidance of sandhi application. This study shows that even highly structured interactive tasks have pot …

Influences of stimulus and response calibrations on level maps of pulsed distortion-product otoacoustic emissions.

Distortion-product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs) are widely used to assess cochlear function, but their diagnostic value is limited by interference between DPOAE components, dependence on optimal stimulus levels, middle-ear transmission, and variability due to ear-canal acoustics. Pulsed DPOAE level maps (LMs), which allow the derivation of estimated distortion-product thresholds (L2,EDPT), address some of these limitations. However, their reliability may still be compromised by standing-wave phenomena and calibration errors. In this study, we systematically compared four calibration methods-…

Pathologic Processes in the Larynx Leading to a Change in the Voice Function.

OBJECTIVES: Phonetics is the study of the acoustics of the human voice. The larynx functions not only as an air passage but also as a vocal organ. The vibration of the vocal cords produces sound as air is exhaled. Phonation occurs in the larynx, where a triangular opening, known as the vocal fold, forms during breathing. The goal is to review the literature on the most common pathologic processes in the larynx that lead to changes in voice function. METHODS: From January 2000 to September 2024, the PubMed, BioMed Central, ScienceDirect, Scopus, Web of Science, and Embase databases were used t…

On Transformation Form-Invariance in Thermal Convection.

Over the past two decades, effective control of physical fields, such as light fields or acoustics fields, has greatly benefited from transforming media. One of these rapidly growing research areas is transformation thermotics, especially embodied in the thermal conductive and radiative modes. On the other hand, transformation media in thermal convection has seldom been studied due to the complicated governing equations involving both fluid motion and heat transfer terms. The difficulty lies in the robustness of form invariance in the Navier-Stokes equations or their simplified forms under coo…

A new species of Leptopelis (Anura, Arthroleptidae) from the south-eastern slope of the Ethiopian Highlands, with notes on the Leptopelis gramineus species complex and the revalidation of a previously synonymised species.

A new ground-dwelling species of treefrog in the genus Leptopelis is described from the Harenna Forest in south-eastern Ethiopia. The description is based on morphology and acoustics and is supported by molecular data. The new species has a small body size, and the digital discs on fingers and toes are significantly more conspicuous than in other semi-fossorial members of the L. gramineus complex. It occupies forest habitats at lower altitudes and is separated ecologically and geographically from high-altitude species of the complex. One of them, a parapatric cryptic species from Bale and Arsi…

Listener Factors Explain Little Variability in Self-Adjusted Hearing Aid Gain.

Self-adjustment of hearing aid gain can provide valuable information about the gain preferences of individual listeners, but these preferences are not well understood. Listeners with mild-to-moderate hearing loss used self-adjustment to select amplification gain and compression parameters in real time on a portable touch screen device while listening in quiet and noisy backgrounds. Adjustments to gain prescribed by the National Acoustics Laboratories' non-linear fitting procedure (NAL-NL2) showed large between-subject variability. Known listener characteristics (age, gender, hearing thresholds…

Structure and function of the mammalian middle ear. II: Inferring function from structure.

Anatomists and zoologists who study middle ear morphology are often interested to know what the structure of an ear can reveal about the auditory acuity and hearing range of the animal in question. This paper represents an introduction to middle ear function targetted towards biological scientists with little experience in the field of auditory acoustics. Simple models of impedance matching are first described, based on the familiar concepts of the area and lever ratios of the middle ear. However, using the Mongolian gerbil Meriones unguiculatus as a test case, it is shown that the predictions…

Phonatory effects of type I thyroplasty implant shape and depth of medialization in unilateral vocal fold paralysis.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Medialization thyroplasty (MT) is commonly used to treat glottic insufficiency. In this study, we investigated the phonatory effects of MT implant medialization depth and medial surface shape. METHODS: Recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) and vagal paralysis were simulated in an in vivo canine. A type 1 MT was performed using a silicone elastomer implant with variable medialization depths and medial surface shapes: rectangular, V-shaped, divergent, and convergent. The effects on phonation onset flow/pressure relationships and acoustics were measured. RESULTS: Increasing dep…

Improving the classroom listening skills of children with Down syndrome by using sound-field amplification.

Many children with Down syndrome have fluctuating conductive hearing losses further reducing their speech, language and academic development. It is within the school environment where access to auditory information is crucial that many children with Down syndrome are especially disadvantaged. Conductive hearing impairment which is often fluctuating and undetected reduces the child's ability to extract the important information from the auditory signal. Unfortunately, the design and acoustics of the classroom leads to problems in extracting the speech signal through reduced speech intensity due…

Harnessing Rare-Earth Materials as Exogenous Contrast Agents for Enhanced Photoacoustic Imaging.

Photoacoustic imaging (PAI) has emerged as a promising noninvasive biomedical imaging modality with high spatial resolution and soft tissue contrast. Exogenous contrast agents play a crucial role in enhancing the sensitivity and specificity of PAI. Among these contrast agents, the rare earth materials (REM) have garnered a lot of interest due to their near-infrared (NIR) absorption properties. REM established itself as a well-known entity in the field of bioimaging and therapy due to their optical, magnetic, and photothermal characteristics. The photoacoustic phenomenon of REM has the potentia

Multiplexed parametric vortex beams for underwater communications.

Underwater acoustic communication is constrained by limited bandwidth and large aperture requirements at low frequencies. Parametric acoustic arrays offer a means to generate highly directive low-frequency fields from compact sources, while acoustic vortex beams carrying orbital angular momentum can encode digital information in their phase structure, quantified as their topological charge (TC). In this work, a three-dimensional mixed-domain split-step solver of the Westervelt equation is developed to model the simultaneous generation and propagation of multiple TCs via self-demodulation of vo

Noise analysis and vibration control of flow-induced vibration in the rotating detonation combustor.

The persistent operation of rotating detonation engines (RDEs) is severely constrained by intense combustion chamber vibrations and excessive noise emissions. Existing research on engine noise has been predominantly confined to experimental investigations of noise generation mechanisms and sound pressure levels, leaving critical gaps in predictive modeling. To address this, this study employs a numerical methodology for analyzing transient flow fields within the combustion chamber, enabling systematic characterization of vibration-coupled noise phenomena. Leveraging this computational approach

Vestibular schwannoma surgery with cochlear implantation under continuous monitoring using the auditory nerve testing system: Three cases with distinct clinical scenarios.

During the simultaneous resection of vestibular schwannomas and cochlear implantation, acoustic nerve preservation is essential. A recent study highlighted the effectiveness of the Auditory Nerve Test System (ANTS) for evaluating cochlear nerve function following vestibular schwannoma resection and for determining its suitability for cochlear implantation. However, the use of this system for the continuous intraoperative monitoring of acoustic nerve preservation has only been documented in one case in the literature. We recently encountered three distinct clinical cases: a case of neurofibroma

Development and characterization of a reproducible, low-cost in vitro ultrasound stimulation (LIVUS) method.

Ultrasound has been used for decades in diagnostic and therapeutic applications. Low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) has recently emerged as a promising modality for low-energy therapies that rely on cell mechanotransduction rather than thermal effects. Despite the increased application of LIPUS for several applications in the clinic, including bone healing and cellular modulation, the translation of its applications requires reliable in vitro systems that enable systematic screening of ultrasound parameters and biological responses. However, existing in vitro stimulation platforms often l

Anatomy and mechanisms of vocal production in harvest mice.

Characterizing mechanisms of vocal production provides important insight into the ecology of acoustic divergence. In this study, we characterized production mechanisms of two types of vocalizations emitted by western harvest mice (Reithrodontomys megalotis), a species uniquely positioned to inform trait evolution because it is a sister taxon to peromyscines (Peromyscus and Onychomys spp.), which use vocal fold vibrations to produce long-distance calls, but more ecologically and acoustically similar to baiomyines (Baiomys and Scotinomys spp.), which employ a whistle mechanism. We found that lon

A simulation study on the sensitivity of transcranial ray-tracing ultrasound modeling to skull properties.

In transcranial focused ultrasound therapies, such as treating essential tremor via thermal ablation in the thalamus, acoustic energy is focused through the skull using a phased-array transducer. Ray tracing is a computationally efficient method that can correct skull-induced phase aberrations via per-element phase delay calculations using patient-specific computed tomography (CT) data. However, recent studies show that variations in CT-derived Hounsfield unit may account for only 50% of the speed of sound variability in human skull specimens, potentially limiting clinical transcranial ultraso

Strain Hardening of Polypropylene Microfiber Reinforced Composite Based on Alkali-Activated Slag Matrix.

A comparative study of the fracture features, strength and deformation properties of pseudo strain-hardening composites based on alkali-activated slag and Portland cement matrices with polypropylene microfiber was carried out. Correlations between their compositions and characteristics of stress-strain diagrams under tension in bending with an additional determination of acoustic emission parameters were determined. An average strength alkali-activated slag matrix with compressive strength of 40 MPa and a high-strength Portland cement matrix with compressive strength of 70 MPa were used. The m

Combined high-speed holographic shape and full-field displacement measurements of tympanic membrane.

The conical shape of the tympanic membrane (TM or eardrum) plays an important role in its function, such that variations in shape alter the acoustically induced motions of the TM. We present a method that precisely determines both shape and acoustically induced transient response of the entire TM using the same optics and maintaining the same coordinate system, where the TM transient displacements due to a broadband acoustic click excitation (50-μs impulse) and the shape are consecutively measured within <200  ms. Interferograms gathered with continuous high-speed (>2  kHz) optical phase sampl

Involvement of ordinary what and where auditory cortical areas during illusory perception.

The focus of the present study is on the relationships between illusory and non-illusory auditory perception analyzed at a biological level. To this aim, we investigate neural mechanisms underlying the Deutsch's illusion, a condition in which both sound identity ("what") and origin ("where") are deceptively perceived. We recorded magnetoencephalogram from healthy subjects in three conditions: (a) listening to the acoustic sequence eliciting the illusion (ILL), (b) listening to a monaural acoustic sequence mimicking the illusory percept (MON), and (c) listening to an acoustic sequence similar t
