Prevalence Trends of Foodborne Pathogens Bacillus cereus, Non-STEC Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus in Ready-to-Eat Foods Sourced from Restaurants, Cafés, Catering and Takeaway Food Premises.

Foodborne pathogens of Bacillus cereus (B. cereus), non-STEC Escherichia coli (non-STEC E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) are currently non-notifiable in Australia unless attributed to a food poisoning outbreak. Due to the lack of data around individual cases and isolations in foods, any changes in prevalence may go undetected. The aim of this study was to determine any changes in the prevalence of B. cereus, non-STEC E. coli and S. aureus in ready-to-eat (RTE) foods sampled from Western Australian restaurants, cafés, catering facilities and takeaway food premises from July 2009 t…

Intracellular Major Histocompatibility Complex Class II and C-X-C Motif Chemokine Ligand 10-Expressing Neutrophils Indicate the State of Anti-Tumor Activity Induced by Bacillus Calmette-Guérin.

(1) Background: Inflammatory responses induce the formation of both anti-tumor and pro-tumor neutrophils known as myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs). Intermittent intravesical infusion of Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) is an established cancer immunotherapy for non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC). However, the types of neutrophils induced via the inflammatory response to both tumor-bearing and BCG remain unclear. (2) Methods: We therefore analyzed neutrophil dynamics in the peripheral blood and urine of patients with NMIBC who received BCG therapy. Further, we analyzed the effects…

Plant growth promotion of the forage plant Lupinus albus Var. Orden Dorado using Pseudomonas agronomica sp. nov. and Bacillus pretiosus sp. nov. added over a valorized agricultural biowaste.

INTRODUCTION: The overexploitation of natural ecosystems and the evolution of climate change currently force us to design new strategies for more sustainable agronomic uses. The recovery of plant residues, as an alternative to agrochemicals, can help alleviate these problems, for example, through its use for the synthesis of biofertilizers. In this work, the effect of the organic fertilizer matrix ORGAON® from the valorization of horticultural waste is tested, to which two strains of bacteria (and their consortium) are added (SAICEU11T identified as Bacillus pretiosus and SAICEU22T identified …

Quality of Life in Patients with High-grade Non-muscle-invasive Bladder Cancer Undergoing Standard Versus Reduced Frequency of Bacillus Calmette-Guérin Instillations: The EAU-RF NIMBUS Trial.

BACKGROUND: Adverse events induced by intravesical bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) to treat high-grade non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) often lead to treatment discontinuation. The EAU-RF NIMBUS trial found a reduced number of standard-dose BCG instillations to be inferior with the standard regimen. Nonetheless, it remains important to evaluate whether patients in the reduced BCG treatment arm had better quality of life (QoL) due to a possible reduction in toxicity or burden. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether patients in the EAU-RF NIMBUS trial experienced better QoL after a reduced BCG…

Erythropoietin and Bacillus Calmette-Guérin Vaccination Mitigate 3-Nitropropionic Acid-Induced Huntington-like Disease in Rats by Modulating the PI3K/Akt/mTOR/P70S6K Pathway and Enhancing the Autophagy.

Oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction are among the mechanisms expected to explain the pathogenesis of Huntington's disease. Erythropoietin (EPO) and the Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccine have neuroprotective effects against neurodegenerative diseases; however, the full mechanisms of their action are currently unclear. Here, for the first time, we investigated the neuroprotective effect of BCG vaccination in Huntington-like disease induced by 3-nitropropionic acid (3-NP) and its combination with EPO. Male Wistar rats were randomized into five groups: saline-treated control; 3-NP …

Updated European Association of Urology (EAU) Prognostic Factor Risk Groups Overestimate the Risk of Progression in Patients with Non-muscle-invasive Bladder Cancer Treated with Bacillus Calmette-Guérin.

BACKGROUND: The 2021 European Association of Urology (EAU) guidelines contain updated prognostic factor risk groups for non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC). These groups are based on the following predictors of progression: tumour stage, grade, number, and size; concomitant carcinoma in situ; and age. However, the groups were derived from datasets excluding patients treated with bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG). OBJECTIVE: To determine the validity of the updated EAU prognostic factor risk groups in patients with NMIBC treated with BCG. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: We reviewed pat…

A novel recombinant Mycobacterium bovis bacillus Calmette-Guerin strain expressing human granulocyte macrophage colony-stimulating factor and Mycobacterium tuberculosis early secretory antigenic target 6 complex augments Th1 immunity.

Since Mycobacterium bovis bacillus Calmette-Guerin strain (BCG) fails to protect adults from pulmonary tuberculosis (TB), there is an urgent need for developing a new vaccine. In this study, we constructed a novel recombinant BCG strain (rBCG) expressing human granulocyte macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) and the 6 kDa early secretory antigenic target (ESAT6) of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, named rBCG:GE (expressing GMCSF-ESAT6 complex), and evaluated the immunogenicity of the construct in BALB/c mice. Our results indicated that the rBCG:GE was able to induce higher titer of antibod…

An individual patient data meta-analysis of the long-term outcome of randomised studies comparing intravesical mitomycin C versus bacillus Calmette-Guérin for non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer.

BACKGROUND: Patients with non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer with an intermediate or high risk need adjuvant intravesical therapy after surgery. Based largely on meta-analyses of previously published results, guidelines recommend using either bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) or mitomycin C (MMC) in these patients. Individual patient data (IPD) meta-analyses, however, are the gold standard. OBJECTIVE: To compare the efficacy of BCG and MMC based on an IPD meta-analysis of randomised trials. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Trials were searched through Medline and review articles. The relevant…

Purification and partial characterization of N-hydroxy-l-phenylalanine decarboxylase/oxidase from Bacillus sp. strain OxB-1, an enzyme involved in aldoxime biosynthesis in the "aldoxime-nitrile pathway".

An enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of N-hydroxy-l-phenylalanine to phenylacetaldoxime was shown to be present in the Z-phenylacetaldoxime-degrading bacterium, Bacillus sp. strain OxB-1. The aldoxime-forming enzyme, which is induced by L-phenylalanine, was purified 8,050-fold to apparent homogeneity with a yield of 15.2%. The enzyme has a subunit M(r) of about 86,000. The enzyme converts N-hydroxy-L-phenylalanine (K(m) 0.99 mM) to only one geometrical isomer, namely Z-phenylacetaldoxime. Relatively large amounts of pyridoxal 5'-phosphate (PLP) are required to be present in the reaction mix…

Interleukin-6 production by human bladder tumor cell lines is up-regulated by bacillus Calmette-Guérin through nuclear factor-kappaB and Ap-1 via an immediate early pathway.

PURPOSE: The expression of interleukin-6 (IL-6) by normal and malignant urothelium in response to bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) may have direct and indirect effects on the antitumor activity of BCG. We evaluated the molecular signaling pathway through which BCG induces IL-6 expression in human transitional cell carcinoma lines. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We evaluated IL-6 messenger RNA and protein expression by human transitional carcinoma cell lines in response to BCG. Pharmacological inhibition of protein synthesis was used to determine if BCG mediated IL-6 induction occurred via an immediate-…

Co-application of γ-aminobutyric acid and Bacillus zanthoxyli HN90 is associated with improved vegetative traits and altered rhizosphere microbial profiles in rice under a fixed reduced-nitrogen regime.

Rice vegetative traits and rhizosphere microbial profiles were evaluated after co-application of γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and Bacillus zanthoxyli HN90 under a fixed reduced-nitrogen regime. In controlled glasshouse pot experiments in which all treatments in the second pot trial were maintained at 80% of the conventional N rate, co-application of 5 mM GABA and the plant-growth-promoting rhizobacterium Bacillus zanthoxyli HN90 was associated with a shorter, sturdier phenotype, with 29.5% greater stem diameter and 36.9% higher SPAD at maturity relative to the reduced-N control. These vegetative…
