Encephalitozoonosis in squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus).

Twenty-two cases of naturally occurring encephalitozoonosis in squirrel monkeys are reported from breeding colonies of the Delta Regional Primate Research Center, Covington, La. Characteristic foci of granulomatous inflammation and organisms were demonstrated in brains, kidneys, lungs, adrenals, and livers. Vasculitis and perivasculitis were also common lesions in several organs. At least seven cases were congenital while ten others occurred in monkeys less than nine months old. Granulomatous placentitis, previously unreported in any species due to Encephalitozoon cuniculi, was present in one …

Integrated Physiological and Transcriptomic Analyses Suggest Key Adaptive Mechanisms of European Perch (Perca fluviatilis) to Acute Heat Stress.

The European perch (Perca fluviatilis) is highly susceptible to heat stress, limiting its sustainable aquaculture. While single-organ thermal responses are partially understood, the systemic, multi-organ cooperative survival mechanisms under acute heat stress remain poorly characterized. To elucidate the underlying tolerance mechanisms and provide genetic markers for breeding, this study investigated the multi-organ responses of European perch (n = 90; body length: 13.15 ± 1.75 cm; body weight: 30.54 ± 7.17 g) transferred from 24 °C to an acute heat stress challenge (31 °C) at an increasing ra…

Characterization of Cytokines in Donkey Follicular Fluid and Seminal Plasma: A Pilot Study.

Post-breeding endometrial inflammation is a well-known physiological response in jennies, especially after artificial insemination with frozen-thawed sperm. Bioactive molecules present in reproductive fluids, including cytokines, may contribute to regulating these immune processes. The aim of this study was to characterize the cytokine profile of preovulatory follicular fluid (FF) and seminal plasma (SP) in donkeys and to explore their potential relevance for reproductive physiology. To this end, 10 FF samples were collected from five fertile Catalan jennies, and 10 samples were isolated from …

A vision-based deep learning framework enables high-accuracy prediction of Geng rice eating quality and facilitates QTL mapping.

Geng rice (Oryza sativa subsp. japonica) from northeast China dominates the country's high-value rice market because of its superior eating quality. However, current methods for quality evaluation rely on either labor-intensive, subjective sensory protocols or low-accuracy, calibration-heavy near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS), thus hindering breeding efforts for high eating quality and market development. Here, we report a vision-based deep learning framework that combines multi-population fine-tuning with industrial vision-language model (VLM) pre-training to predict the eating quality of Geng…

Unveiling the interactions between design optimization, modeling strategies, and spatial analysis in genomic selection.

Partially-replicated designs are more efficient than fully-replicated ones. They can be further enhanced through optimization and present positive synergy with fully-efficient models and 2D P-splines. In plant breeding, traditional field trials rely on balanced designs with high replication to ensure robust breeding value predictions. However, genomic technologies leveraging genomic relationship matrices have reduced the need for extensive replication, favoring partially-replicated (p-rep) designs. These designs, while effective, pose statistical challenges due to low replication and imbalance…

Multi-trait model-based assessment of selection efficiency and stability in soybean germplasm.

Soybean (Glycine max L. Merrill) productivity is strongly influenced by genotype × environment (G × E) interaction, while simultaneous improvement of yield, seed quality, and associated traits remains a major breeding objective. Twenty-two soybean genotypes were evaluated across eight environments representing four locations and two kharif seasons in Maharashtra, India, to identify genotypes combining desirable multi-trait performance, stability, and adaptability. Significant variation was found for all the traits studied, seed yield ranged from 0.26 to 1.68 kg plot- 1 and protein content from…

A robust biotechnology induces artificial genomic duplication via transient RNAi-mediated suppression of OSD1 in rice.

Ploidy manipulation is a crucial strategy for generating germplasm in crop breeding. However, artificial genomic duplication, often induced by colchicine treatment, is associated with toxicity and unpredictability. Although mutations in OSD1 have shown promise for inducing genomic duplication, the instability of ploidy across generations limits their practical application. In this study, we developed a Plant Polyploidization via Gene Interference (PPGI) system that utilizes transient RNAi-mediated suppression of OSD1 to efficiently induce artificial genomic duplication, demonstrating obvious p…

Disrupted FLOWERING LOCUS C alleles from weedy radish enhance the florigenic potential of rootstocks for graft-mediated floral induction in Brassicaceae.

Graft-mediated floral induction is a classical yet promising breeding technique that accelerates seed production and shortens generation time in crops. However, its application remains limited to a few species because floral induction is often unstable. Even among florally induced rootstocks, grafted scions can differ in their flowering response depending on rootstock genotype, but the genetic basis of this variation remains unclear. Here, using a Brassicaceae grafting model, we investigated two early-bolting radish (Raphanus sativus) accessions differing in their ability to induce flowering. …

Keypoint-Based Forest Musk Deer Behavioral Recognition Method.

The traditional monitoring of forest musk deer behavior primarily relies on direct human observation or the post hoc playback analysis of ordinary surveillance videos. This approach is not only time-consuming and labor-intensive but also highly subjective, easily leading to missing or misjudged critical behavioral information. Moreover, it is difficult to achieve real-time monitoring and anomaly warning. These limitations severely constrain the efficiency of the large-scale artificial breeding of forest musk deer and the effective advancement of wild population conservation. Thus, this study p…

Choice of traits defines the scope for assisted evolution of corals under climate change.

Marine heatwaves, exacerbated by climate change, are causing widespread coral mortality. Novel host-associated assisted evolution interventions, such as selective breeding, are now being considered to enhance coral heatwave tolerance and promote population persistence. Yet the evolutionary constraints associated with targeting different heat tolerance traits and the risks of unintended fitness costs remain uncertain. Here, we quantify key life history traits for Acropora aff. digitifera corals in a pedigree-tracked managed population. We find weak-to-moderate positive genetic correlations amon…

The transcription factor OsWRKY11 orchestrates rice cold tolerance through integrating multiple signaling pathways.

Cold stress is a major abiotic stress that threatens rice productivity and global food security. Elucidating the complex mechanisms of cold tolerance in rice is crucial for developing cold-tolerant varieties through molecular breeding. Here, we identified a WRKY transcription factor, OsWRKY11, as a positive regulator of cold tolerance in rice. OsWRKY11 expression was induced by both cold stress and exogenous jasmonic acid (JA) treatment. Genetic evidence showed that OsWRKY11 overexpression enhanced cold tolerance of rice seedlings, while knockout of OsWRKY11 reduced cold tolerance. In addition…

Natural variation in WRKY53 confers cold tolerance at the booting stage between japonica and indica rice.

Natural variation at the WRKY53-C518G SNP drives cold tolerance divergence between rice subspecies.  The japonica-specific WRKY53518C allele, originating from Chinese wild rice and selected in temperate regions, confers cold tolerance by reducing GA repression to protect pollen fertility, and thus provides a valuable target for rice breeding. Cold tolerance at the booting stage (CTB), when inflorescence development begins, is a major factor limiting rice (Oryza sativa L.) productivity and geographical distribution. However, only a few cold-tolerance genes have been identified. We previously sh…

Glutamate metabolic correlation analysis reveals CnP5CS1 contributes to 2-acetyl-1-pyrroline accumulation in aromatic coconut.

Flavor quality, a key sensory attribute of coconut, has consistently been a central breeding objective throughout long-term domestication and varietal improvement efforts. Developing high-aroma varieties requires a clear understanding of their underlying molecular genetic mechanisms. However, research on the metabolic regulatory enzymes involved remains limited, particularly those linked to 2-acetyl-1-pyrroline (2AP), a volatile compound that primarily contributes to the unique scent of aromatic coconuts. We developed contrasting populations and systematically evaluated the role of CnP5CS in 2…

Efficient Embryogenic Callus Induction and Agrobacterium-Mediated Transformation of the Elite Foxtail Millet (Setaria italica L.) Variety Jingu51.

Foxtail millet (Setaria italica L.) is an important food crop worldwide and serves as a model for studying C4 photosynthesis and drought resistance. However, its application in functional genomics and molecular breeding has been severely constrained by the absence of a reliable genetic transformation system. In this study, 66 varieties were systematically evaluated for embryogenic callus induction capacity, with rates ranging from 0 to 70.22%. Among these, five varieties exhibited high embryogenic potential (>50%). Jingu51, an elite cultivated variety in northern China, was selected as the tra…
