Risk factors for syphilis among newly admitted prisoners: A case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Syphilis remains a major global public health concern in various groups, including people in prisons, where the burden is substantial. This study aimed to identify factors associated with syphilis infection among newly admitted prisoners in a province of Thailand. METHODS: A case-control study was conducted among newly admitted prisoners in three correctional facilities. Cases and controls were randomly selected from newly admitted prisoners who had undergone syphilis screening at prison entry between 01/04/2025 and 30/09/2025. Data were collected using validated data collection i

A Socioecological Perspective on Sexual Health Promotion Choices Among Youth At-Risk for and Living with HIV in Los Angeles and New Orleans.

Youth in the US remain at high relative risk for HIV and sexually transmitted infections compared to other age groups despite increasing diversity in the available tools to reduce HIV risk through behavioral strategies, biomedical methods, and treatment as prevention. Previous research has shown that acceptability and appeal of prevention methods vary across youth, and over-emphasis on any one strategy may overlook youth's autonomy to make their own informed decisions about their sexual health. We use a socioecological framework to understand factors influencing sexual health promotion choices

Hazardous alcohol use is associated with sexual behaviors that increase risk for HIV acquisition among fishermen in a high HIV prevalence area of Kenya.

Links between hazardous alcohol use and HIV acquisition are well documented, with less known about this relationship among fishermen, a priority group for HIV prevention. We examined associations between hazardous alcohol use and sexual risk behaviors among fishermen in Kenya using 2022 data from 733 fishermen in three Lake Victoria communities. Measures included the AUDIT-C and sexual relationship histories. Logistic regression models assessed associations between hazardous alcohol use and (1) any concurrent sexual relationships, (2) concurrency among non-polygynous men, (3) any higher HIV ri

Sexual Victimization, Alcohol Intoxication, and Sexual Abdication: The Roles of Impulse Control and Goal-Directed Behavior Emotion Regulation Difficulties in the Context of Negative and Positive Mood.

Sexual trauma, such as childhood sexual abuse (CSA) and adolescent and adult sexual assault (ASA), is associated with sexual abdication - letting a partner decide how far to go sexually - which contributes to condom nonuse. Difficulties with emotion regulation related to goal-directed behavior and impulsivity when distressed are associated with risky sexual behaviors. The cumulative effects of multiple sexual traumas (i.e. CSA, ASA) may influence emotion regulation and sexual risk-taking. Additionally, alcohol intoxication may also disrupt emotion regulation processes. This study leverages an

Association Between Criminal Legal System Involvement and HIV Prevention and Care Among Transgender Women of Color: The TURNNT Cohort Study.

PURPOSE: Experiences with the criminal legal system can increase the risk of HIV transmission and disrupt linkage to HIV care and prevention. This study quantified the association between criminal legal system involvement and HIV outcomes among transgender women of color (TWOC). METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis using first-wave data from the Trying to Understand Relationships, Networks, and Neighborhoods Among Transgender Women of Color Cohort Study (n = 314). We investigated the association between measures of criminal legal system involvement (history of arrest and history o

For Whom Does Chemsex Increase Sexual Risk? Considering Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP), Antiretroviral Therapy (ART), and the Dual Control Model.

Background: Chemsex, or the use of specific substances (e.g., methamphetamines, GHB/GBL) to enhance sexual experiences, is a well-documented risk factor for sexual risk behavior and subsequent HIV transmission among men who have sex with men (MSM). However, it is unclear why chemsex contributes to sexual risk and how HIV prevention measures, such as pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and antiretroviral therapy (ART), impact this relationship. The present study sought to confirm the event-level association between chemsex engagement and sexual risk, examine how use of PrEP and ART, as well as sexu

The rise and fall of HIV in Kinshasa over a century.

Kinshasa was the crucible of the HIV pandemic, the only place on Earth where its path can be tracked over a century through history, demography, evolutionary biology, epidemiological studies, and population-based surveys. Altogether, these tools demonstrate that HIV is fading away from Kinshasa. Between HIV's arrival (≈1916) and the last survey (2023-2024), Kinshasa's population increased from 14 000 to 17 million inhabitants. After an exponential growth of persons with HIV (PWH) from the mid-1950s until 1988, this stalled between 1988 and 2013-2014. From 85 900 PWH in 2013-2014, this number d

Moving beyond sexual and reproductive health knowledge: an evaluation of a co-designed digital engagement tool to promote sexual and reproductive health among international students in New South Wales, Australia.

BACKGROUND: This study evaluates the perceived impact and needed enhancement of a co-designed digital sexual and reproductive health (SRH) tool ('the Hub') developed to address SRH literacy gaps among international students (IS) in New South Wales, Australia. Despite Australia's large IS population and recognition of SRH as a fundamental human right, many report limited exposure to SRH information and face barriers to navigating health systems and accessing SRH services in host countries. METHODS: A mixed-methods evaluation was conducted comprising an online survey (August-October 2024; N = 1

Prevalence and risk factors of sexually transmitted infections in women in eleven hospitals in two low-income countries: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) remain a major public health challenge, particularly in low- and middle-income countries where surveillance and routine screening are limited. In Central Africa, data on Chlamydia trachomatis, Mycoplasma genitalium, Ureaplasma urealyticum, Mycoplasma hominis, and Neisseria gonorrhoeae remain scarce, despite their role in infertility, adverse pregnancy outcomes, and potential contribution to antimicrobial resistance. This study aims to determine the prevalence of these bacteria and identify risk factors among women in the West Region of Cameroo

Extreme Weather Events and Linkages with HIV Vulnerabilities Among Young Sex Workers and Sexually Diverse Men in Nairobi, Kenya: Qualitative Multi-method Insights.

There is growing attention to the impacts of climate change and related extreme weather events (EWE) on HIV vulnerabilities, yet this research largely overlooks key populations such as sex workers and gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (gbMSM). This is a critical knowledge gap in contexts that are greatly affected by climate change, EWE, and HIV, such as Kenya. To address this gap, this study examined the lived experiences of sex workers and gbMSM aged 18-24 in Nairobi, Kenya, regarding the relationships between climate change and EWE, resource insecurities (e.g., food, water),

HIV Knowledge, Information Sources, and Perceived Risk among Reproductive-Aged Individuals in Kisumu, Kenya: A Latent Profile Analysis.

Information, education, and communication programs to improve HIV knowledge and communication skills are critical to HIV responses. It is unclear if improved HIV knowledge translates to decreased HIV acquisition risks. We identified typologies of HIV knowledge to assess the relationship with HIV risk perceptions and prevention behaviors using data from reproductive-aged adults without previously diagnosed HIV at screening for entry into the RV393 HIV incidence cohort in Kisumu County, Kenya. Staff-administered questionnaires on sociodemographic characteristics, HIV knowledge, information sourc

Left behind? A longitudinal analysis of need for preexposure prophylaxis services among middle-aged and older adults in South Africa.

INTRODUCTION: Despite 1.3 million cumulative preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP) initiations in South Africa, 150 000+ people newly acquire HIV every year. A significant proportion of these are middle-aged adults, a population not previously prioritized for PrEP. Evidence on how many middle-aged and older adults in South Africa may benefit from PrEP services is needed. METHODS: We estimate the need for PrEP counseling in a sample of 40+ year-old, rural South Africans in 2018 and 2022, using "Health and Aging in Africa: A Longitudinal Study in South Africa (HAALSI)" data. We first identify potentia

Trend and Associated Factors for Late and Advanced HIV Diagnoses in 2011-2022 in Melbourne, Australia.

Late- and advanced HIV diagnoses remain significant challenges worldwide. Understanding the factors associated with and testing practice among those with late (CD4 < 350 cells/µL) and advanced diagnoses (CD4 < 200 cells/µL) is essential to diminish AIDS-related morbidity and mortality. This retrospective study manually reviewed e-medical records of new HIV diagnoses between 2011 and 2022 at Melbourne Sexual Health Centre, Australia. Among 606 new diagnoses, 25% (152/606) were late, 11% (65/606) were advanced, and 94% (568/606) were men who have sex with men. Among 352 overseas-born individuals
