The incidence of lung cancer among 428 shipyard welders exposed for more than ten years to welding fumes was investigated. The welders were examined for siderosis by the Directorate of Labor Inspection in 1975. The present study was a follow-up based on historical information from the Norwegian registry of dust-exposed workers. A damaged skin forms a health hazard in flower-bulb growers as it enables higher permeation rates for pesticides than normal skin. Therefore, an investigation was performed into the skin condition of 103 bulb growers and 49 controls. Contact dermatitis of the hands was of the same order (11 and 10%) in both groups. Chrysotile asbestos fibres induce a rapid generation of reactive oxygen metabolites by human polymorphonuclear leucocytes (PMNL) in vitro. This effect was markedly enhanced by the presence of 10-200 micrograms/ml of human gammaglobulin, purified polyclonal IgG, and monoclonal IgG and IgA myeloma proteins. An autopsy case of pseudomesotheliomatous carcinoma of the right lung in a 56-year-old man occupationally exposed to stone dust is presented. From open biopsy specimens in which polyhedral epithelium-like cells appeared arranged in nests, sheets, and trabecula without apparent tubular pattern, a malignant pleural mesothelioma was suspected.
