Are There Nationwide Socioeconomic and Demographic Disparities in the Use of Outpatient Orthopaedic Services?

BACKGROUND: Although disparities in the use of healthcare services in the United States have been well-documented, information examining sociodemographic disparities in the use of healthcare services (for example, office-based and emergency department [ED] care) for nonemergent musculoskeletal conditions is limited. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: This study was designed to answer two important questions: (1) Are there identifiable nationwide sociodemographic disparities in the use of either office-based orthopaedic care or ED care for common, nonemergent musculoskeletal conditions? (2) Is there a meanin

Cervical cancer screening uptake and its determinants among rural women in North Central Nigeria: a cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: Cervical cancer is the third most common cancer in Nigeria, with 13,676 new cases and 7093 deaths in 2022 (according to GLOBOCAN estimates). Cervical cancer survival is poor in Sub-Saharan Africa, with nearly half of diagnosed women dying within 3 years. Most cases occur in women aged 15-44 years, resulting in significant social, economic, and psychological consequences. Despite this disease being preventable and curable when detected early, many Nigerian women present at advanced stages due to low awareness, misconceptions, and limited screening. Previous studies have been large

A Compendium Review of the Global Epidemiology of Ticks and Tick-borne Diseases: Regional Insights from Türkiye.

Vector-borne diseases have historically posed significant threats to plants, humans, domestic animals, and wildlife, with their impact being especially pronounced in tropical and subtropical regions. Among these, tick-borne diseases (TBDs) have emerged as an increasingly critical global concern. This growing threat is largely driven by the expanding geographic range of ticks and the wide array of pathogens they transmit, including viruses, bacteria, protozoa, nematodes, fungi, and infectious prion proteins. The global cumulative economic impact of the challenges caused by ticks and TBDs contri

Medical Students' Attitudes, Perceptions, and Self-Reported Familiarity With AI in Health Care: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: AI is increasingly encountered in clinical care and medical education, but medical students' attitudes, perceptions, and self-reported familiarity have been assessed using heterogeneous survey instruments, AI referents, and response scales. Prior reviews often combined mixed health profession populations or summarized central estimates without fully showing variation across settings. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to synthesize quantitative evidence on medical students' AI-related attitudes, perceptions, and self-reported familiarity while examining construct harmonization, participa

Addressing HIV Misconceptions among Heterosexual Black Men and Communities in Ontario.

BACKGROUND: Black males accounted for 19.7% of all the new HIV diagnoses in Canada in 2020, yet Black people make up only 4.26% of the population. Persistent misconceptions about modes of HIV transmission need to be addressed to reduce the relatively high HIV prevalence among Black men. We described the HIV misconceptions held by some HBM in Ontario. We also identified the social determinants that are protective versus risk factors for HIV misconceptions among heterosexual Black men (HBM) in Ontario with a view to building evidence-based strategies for strengthening HIV prevention and stigma r

Web-Based Personalized Machine Learning Recommendations to Enhance Shared Decision-Making in Prostate-Specific Antigen Screening: Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Prostate‑specific antigen (PSA) screening involves complex trade‑offs between early detection and the risks of overdiagnosis. For older adults (aged ≥50 years), shared decision‑making (SDM) is often hindered by limited health literacy, sensory or cognitive impairments, and multimorbidity, which complicate risk comprehension. Traditional decision aids provide foundational knowledge but are often nonpersonalized. Machine learning (ML) may offer individualized recommendations, yet the psychological and behavioral effects of ML‑assisted SDM in geriatric populations remain poorly charac…

Scientists' Warning to Humanity: The Need to Begin Teaching Critical and Systems Thinking Early in Life.

We live in a time of global crises: a deteriorating environment that is struggling to provide all the resources and services we demand of it, changing climate and its consequences for the biosphere, its habitats, inhabitants and biodiversity, conflicts-divisive ideologies-competition for resources, increasing societal inequalities and human deprivations, and a youth mental health pandemic, to name but just a few. Most of these crises are self-made, the result of human decisions, and their acceptance/toleration by society. Policies and practices at all levels of society that created, exacerbate

COVID-19 testing and reporting behaviours in England across different sociodemographic groups: a population-based study using testing data and data from community prevalence surveillance surveys.

BACKGROUND: Understanding underlying mechanisms of heterogeneity in test-seeking and reporting behaviour during an infectious disease outbreak can help to protect vulnerable populations and guide equity-driven interventions. The COVID-19 pandemic probably exerted different stresses on individuals in different sociodemographic groups and ensuring fair access to and usage of COVID-19 tests was a crucial element of England's testing programme. We aimed to investigate the relationship between sociodemographic factors and COVID-19 testing behaviours in England during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS

Effects of a Sleep Health Education Program for Children and Parents on Child Sleep Duration and Difficulties: A Stepped-Wedge Cluster Randomized Clinical Trial.

IMPORTANCE: Preschool-aged children often lack sufficient sleep and experience sleep difficulties. A consistent bedtime routine, falling asleep alone, and other sleep practices reduce difficulties and increase sleep duration. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effects of a preschool-based sleep health literacy program on children's sleep duration and difficulties and on parent sleep knowledge, attitudes, self-efficacy, and beliefs 9 and 12 months after the program. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This stepped-wedge cluster randomized clinical trial was implemented across the 2018-2019 school year…

Growth, physical, and cognitive function in children who are born HIV-free: School-age follow-up of a cluster-randomised trial in rural Zimbabwe.

BACKGROUND: Globally, over 16 million children were exposed to HIV during pregnancy but remain HIV-free at birth and throughout childhood by 2022. Children born HIV-free (CBHF) have higher morbidity and mortality and poorer neurodevelopment in early life compared to children who are HIV-unexposed (CHU), but long-term outcomes remain uncertain. We characterised school-age growth, cognitive and physical function in CBHF and CHU previously enrolled in the Sanitation Hygiene Infant Nutrition Efficacy (SHINE) trial in rural Zimbabwe. METHODS AND FINDINGS: The SHINE trial enrolled pregnant women be

Mass deworming to improve developmental health and wellbeing of children in low-income and middle-income countries: a systematic review and network meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Soil-transmitted helminthiasis and schistosomiasis, considered among the neglected tropical diseases by WHO, affect more than a third of the world's population, with varying intensity of infection. We aimed to evaluate the effects of mass deworming for soil-transmitted helminths (with or without deworming for schistosomiasis or co-interventions) on growth, educational achievement, cognition, school attendance, quality of life, and adverse effects in children in endemic helminth areas. METHODS: We searched 11 databases up to Jan 14, 2016, websites and trial registers, contacted aut

Effectiveness of interventions for improving educational outcomes for people with disabilities in low- and middle-income countries: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: People with disabilities are consistently falling behind in educational outcomes compared to their peers without disabilities, whether measured in terms of school enrolment, school completion, mean years of schooling, or literacy levels. These inequalities in education contribute to people with disabilities being less likely to achieve employment, or earn as much if they are employed, as people without disabilities. Evidence suggests that the gap in educational attainment for people with and without disabilities is greatest in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Exclusion of

Promoting Physical Activity With Self-Tracking and Mobile-Based Coaching for Cardiac Surgery Patients During the Discharge-Rehabilitation Gap: Protocol for a Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Home-based cardiac rehabilitations (CRs) with digital technologies have been researched and implemented to replace, augment, and complement traditional center-based CR in recent years with considerable success. One problem that technology-enhanced home-based CR can potentially address is the gap between cardiac interventions and formal CR programs. In the Netherlands and some other countries (eg, Australia), patients after cardiac interventions stay at home for 3-4 weeks without much support from their physicians, and often engage in very little physical activity (PA). A home-based

Topical antibiotics for treating bacterial keratitis: a network meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Infectious keratitis, commonly known as corneal infection, is a major cause of blindness, affecting approximately six million people globally and resulting in around two million cases of monocular blindness annually. The incidence varies widely worldwide, with higher rates in low- and middle-income countries due to various risk factors, including agricultural injuries and other accidental trauma, limited access to health care, and low levels of health literacy. Bacterial keratitis (BK) is the most prevalent form in higher-income regions, contributing to significant morbidity and he…
