Development and validation of a cranial ultrasound imaging-based deep learning model for periventricular-intraventricular haemorrhage detection and grading: a two-centre study.

BACKGROUND: Periventricular-intraventricular haemorrhage (IVH) is the most prevalent type of neonatal intracranial haemorrhage. It is especially threatening to preterm infants, in whom it is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Cranial ultrasound has become an important means of screening periventricular IVH in infants. The integration of artificial intelligence with neonatal ultrasound is promising for enhancing diagnostic accuracy, reducing physician workload, and consequently improving periventricular IVH outcomes. OBJECTIVES: The study investigated whether deep learning-ba

Improved PAA algorithm for breast mass detection in mammograms.

Mammography screening is instrumental in the early detection and diagnosis of breast cancer by identifying masses in mammograms. With the rapid development of deep learning, numerous deep learning-based object detection algorithms have been explored for mass detection studies. However, these methods often yield a high false positive rate per image (FPPI) while achieving a high true positive rate (TPR). To maintain a higher TPR while also ensuring lower FPPI, we improved the Probability Anchor Assignment (PAA) algorithm to enhance the detection capability for mammographic characteristics with o

Detection of Helicobacter pylori in virtual slides requires high resolution digitalisation.

To diagnose Helicobacter pylori (HP) infection and its related mucosal injuries requires the histopathological analysis of gastric biopsies. The move from glass slides interpretation towards digital pathology implies technical choices to maintain the performances of histopathological diagnosis. The intra-rater agreement in assessing gastritis diagnostic criteria between glass slides, low resolution and high resolution digital slides in the subject of the present study. One hundred gastric biopsies were re-assessed by a single digestive pathologist on glass slides and digitalised slides at low

Utilizing a responsive web portal for studying disc tracing agreement in retinal images.

Glaucoma is a leading cause of blindness worldwide whose detection is based on multiple factors, including measuring the cup to disc ratio, retinal nerve fiber layer and visual field defects. Advances in image processing and machine learning have allowed the development of automated approached for segmenting objects from fundus images. However, to build a robust system, a reliable ground truth dataset is required for proper training and validation of the model. In this study, we investigate the level of agreement in properly detecting the retinal disc in fundus images using an online portal bu

Retinal microvascular parameters are not significantly associated with mild cognitive impairment in the Northern Ireland Cohort for the Longitudinal Study of Ageing.

BACKGROUND: The retinal and cerebral microvasculature share similar embryological origins and physiological characteristics. Improved imaging technologies provide opportunistic non-invasive assessment of retinal microvascular parameters (RMPs) against cognitive outcomes. We evaluated baseline measures for associations between RMPs and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) from participants of the Northern Ireland Cohort for the Longitudinal Study of Ageing (NICOLA). METHODS: RMPs (central retinal arteriolar / venular equivalents, arteriole to venular ratio, fractal dimension and tortuosity) were me

An Approach to Automatic Hard Exudate Detection in Retina Color Images by a Telemedicine System Based on the d-Eye Sensor and Image Processing Algorithms.

Hard exudates are one of the most characteristic and dangerous signs of diabetic retinopathy. They can be marked during the routine ophthalmological examination and seen in color fundus photographs (i.e., using a fundus camera). The purpose of this paper is to introduce an algorithm that can extract pathological changes (i.e., hard exudates) in diabetic retinopathy. This was a retrospective, nonrandomized study. A total of 100 photos were included in the analysis-50 sick and 50 normal eyes. Small lesions in diabetic retinopathy could be automatically diagnosed by the system with an accuracy of

Automated detection and quantification of breast cancer brain metastases in an animal model using democratized machine learning tools.

Advances in digital whole-slide imaging and machine learning (ML) provide new opportunities for automated examination and quantification of histopathological slides to support pathologists and biologists. However, implementation of ML tools often requires advanced skills in computer science that may not be immediately available in the traditional wet-lab environment. Here, we propose a simple and accessible workflow to automate detection and quantification of brain epithelial metastases on digitized histological slides. We leverage 100 Hematoxylin & Eosin (H&E)-stained whole slide images (WSIs

"The Starry Sky." A new intraprocedural three-dimensional echocardiographic technique.

The NeoChord procedure is a micro-invasive, trans-ventricular, beating-heart chordal replacement technique for patients with severe degenerative mitral valve regurgitation resulting from prolapsed or flail leaflets. Three dimensional transoesophageal echocardiographic guidance is crucial to assist the operator during the procedure. Equidistant placement of neochordae along the free edge of the prolapsing leaflet segment is important to ensure uniform stress distribution and to avoid damaging any of the previously placed neochordae. Lowering the image gain associated with the three-dimensional

Intraoperative brain tumor resection with indocyanine green using augmented microscopy.

Treatment outcomes for brain cancer have seen dismal improvements over the last two decades as evident in available statistical data. Efforts to address this challenge include development of near-infrared contrast agents for improvements in diagnostic and therapeutic modalities. This creates a need for imaging technologies that can support the intraoperative use of such agents. Here, we report implementation of a recently introduced augmented microscope in combination with indocyanine green (ICG), a near-infrared contrast agent, for surgical image guidance of a glioma resection in a rat model.

Machine learning for intraoperative prediction of viability in ischemic small intestine.

OBJECTIVE: Evaluation of intestinal viability is essential in surgical decision-making in patients with acute intestinal ischemia. There has been no substantial change in the mortality rate (30%-93%) of patients with acute mesenteric ischemia (AMI) since the 1980s. As the accuracy from the first laparotomy alone is 50%, the gold standard is a second-look laparotomy, increasing the accuracy to 87%-89%. This study investigates the use of machine learning to classify intestinal viability and histological grading in pig jejunum, based on multivariate time-series of bioimpedance sensor data. APPRO

Immunohistochemical and electron microscopic morphometric image analysis of hepatocellular carcinoma in association of HCV infection.

Early detection of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is crucial for successful therapy. The present work examined the value of ultrastructural morphometric image analysis of hepatocyte nuclei in patients with chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) versus HCC cases with chronic HCV and the corresponding surgical tumor-free safe margins (TFMs), to highlight any early predictive signs of neoplastic cellular transformation. This work also performed an immunohistochemical assessment of cytokeratin 19 (CK19) and Ki-67-positive cells to visualize any associated proliferative activity in the examined groups. Th
