Use of Tobacco Products and Suicide Attempts Among Elementary School-Aged Children.

IMPORTANCE: The use of tobacco products, including e-cigarettes and vaping, has rapidly increased among children. However, despite consistent associations found between smoking cigarettes and suicidal behaviors among adolescents and adults, there are limited data on associations between emerging tobacco products and suicidal behaviors, especially among preadolescent children. OBJECTIVE: To examine whether the use of tobacco products is associated with nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI), suicidal ideation (SI), and suicide attempts (SAs) among preadolescent children. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIP

Are treatment results for eating disorders affected by ADHD symptoms? A one-year follow-up of adult females.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the influence of self-reported Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) symptoms on recovery rate at 1-year follow-up in an unselected group of patients in a specialized eating disorder (ED) clinic. METHODS: Four hundred forty-three adult females with an ED were assessed with the ADHD Self-Report Scale for Adults (ASRS-screener), and for demographic variables and ED symptoms. Recovery was registered at 1-year follow-up. RESULTS: A high degree of ADHD symptoms at baseline was predictive for nonrecovery of ED at 1-year follow-up in patients with loss of control ove

Sociodemographic Characteristics, Patterns of Crack Use, Concomitant Substance Use Disorders, and Psychiatric Symptomatology in Treatment-Seeking Crack-Dependent Individuals in Brazil.

Crack cocaine (crack) dependence is a severe disorder associated with considerable morbidity and mortality, constituting a major public health problem in Brazil. The aim of this study was to improve understanding of the profile of treatment-seeking crack-dependent individuals. We recruited 65 crack-dependent individuals from among those seeking treatment at an outpatient clinic for alcohol and drug treatment in the city of São Paulo, Brazil. Assessments, conducted between August 2012 and July 2014, focused on sociodemographic characteristics, the pattern/history of crack use, treatment history

[Impulsivity: What are the consequences on compliance to rehabilitation?].

INTRODUCTION: Impulsivity is a transnosographical dimension with major consequences on medical care with which psychiatrists are frequently confronted. Furthermore, compliance is a major variable that can affect the efficiency of therapeutics and hospitalizations in psychiatry. A study was carried out in three drug and alcohol rehabilitation hospitalization units to find out if impulsivity can have consequences on compliance. METHOD: The studied population was composed of 85 patients aged from 18 to 70, hospitalized for one or more addiction disorders in a psychometric hospital in Vannes (Fra

Abnormal brain activation in excoriation (skin-picking) disorder: evidence from an executive planning fMRI study.

BACKGROUND: Excoriation (skin-picking) disorder (SPD) is a relatively common psychiatric condition whose neurobiological basis is unknown. AIMS: To probe the function of fronto-striatal circuitry in SPD. METHOD: Eighteen participants with SPD and 15 matched healthy controls undertook an executive planning task (Tower of London) during functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Activation during planning was compared between groups using region of interest and whole-brain permutation cluster approaches. RESULTS: The SPD group exhibited significant functional underactivation in a cluster e

Increased corticolimbic connectivity in cocaine dependence versus pathological gambling is associated with drug severity and emotion-related impulsivity.

Neural biomarkers for the active detrimental effects of cocaine dependence (CD) are lacking. Direct comparisons of brain connectivity in cocaine-targeted networks between CD and behavioural addictions (i.e. pathological gambling, PG) may be informative. This study therefore contrasted the resting-state functional connectivity networks of 20 individuals with CD, 19 individuals with PG and 21 healthy individuals (controls). Study groups were assessed to rule out psychiatric co-morbidities (except alcohol abuse and nicotine dependence) and current substance use or gambling (except PG). We first e

Performance of cocaine dependent individuals and controls on a response inhibition task with varying levels of difficulty.

An assay in which groups perform at both similar and significantly different levels within the same test session may have experimental advantages both in understanding underlying behavioral-cognitive processes and in helping to resolve neuroimaging issues regarding functional significance vs. performance confounds. Here we report behavioral data from a response inhibition (Go/No-Go) task with two levels of No-Go difficulty (easy, hard). The sample included individuals with current cocaine dependence (N=18) and controls (N=15). Using signal detection methodology (d' and Beta), significant main

Lamotrigine as a promising approach to borderline personality: an open case series without concurrent DSM-IV major mood disorder.

BACKGROUND: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) has long defined definitive treatment. Such failure is reflected in repeated suicidal crises, often associated with dysphoric symptoms of a chronic fluctuating nature, whose labile intermittent character does suggest a subthreshold bipolar depressive mixed state. For all these reasons, we hypothesized that the anticonvulsant lamotrigine, touted to be a mood stabilizer with antidepressant properties, might be uniquely beneficial for these patients. METHODS: From a base rate of about 300 patients in a community mental health center, we identifie

Stimulating Future-Oriented Thinking and Goal-Achievement Through the Future Self Using Virtual Reality and a Smartphone App: Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Research suggests that identification with one's future self-encompassing vividness, connectedness, and valence-plays a key role in motivating future-oriented choices and goal pursuit. Interventions aiming to strengthen future self-identification have been shown to reduce maladaptive behaviors and promote well-being, but traditional approaches often rely heavily on imagination. Emerging technologies offer novel opportunities to make the future self more vivid and tangible, potentially reducing cognitive burden, and enhancing intervention effectiveness. OBJECTIVE: This randomized c

Changes in Susceptibility to Cannabis Use From Late Childhood to Early Adolescence.

PURPOSE: Cannabis use during early adolescence can negatively affect brain development and increase the risk of adverse health. We aimed to examine trends and correlates of cannabis-use susceptibility, a psychosocial receptivity construct capturing openness to future use (i.e., absence of a firm commitment not to use, curiosity, and willingness to try if offered) among youth who have not initiated cannabis. METHODS: This study analyzed five waves of the adolescent brain cognitive development (ABCD) study (11,868 unique participants; n = 33,181 person-wave observations) to estimate the prevale

Clinical response to a single-dose methylphenidate challenge is indicative of treatment response at two months in adults with ADHD.

Stimulants such as methylphenidate (MPH) are the first-line pharmacological treatment for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Although stimulants are effective at a group level, individual response varies, which advocates for tailored treatment approaches. Prior studies suggested that neurobiological measures following a single dose of stimulants are indicative of longer-term clinical response. To expand these findings, we tested whether an association between acute and longer-term treatment response can also be identified using measures commonly used in clinic. Sixty adults with

Psychometric Properties of the Greek Version of the BPDSI-IV: Insights into Borderline Personality Disorder Severity.

Background: Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is a growing health concern, characterized by emotional dysregulation, impulsivity, and unstable interpersonal relationships. One of the core features of BPD is self-harm, which has significant implications for clinical management, risk assessment, and treatment planning. Accurate assessment tools are essential in evaluating symptom severity and identifying individuals at high risk of self-injurious behaviors, thereby guiding clinical interventions effectively. This study aimed to assess the psychometric properties, factor structure, and diagno

Understanding an overdose: intention, motivation, and risk.

BACKGROUND: Overdose is frequently categorized dichotomously: an inadvertent therapeutic or recreational misadventure versus a deliberate overdose for self-injurious or suicidal purposes. Categorizing overdoses based on this dichotomy of intention is fraught with methodological problems and may result in potentially inappropriate and/or divergent care pathways. OVERDOSE-RELATED INTENT LIES ALONG A CONTINUUM: Suicidality can rapidly shift in magnitude and frequency at different points in time. A patient's overdose may reflect varying degrees of desire to die, ambivalence about living, disregar

Associations between genetic predisposition to mental health problems and academic achievement: a developmental perspective using two population-based cohorts.

BACKGROUND: Children's cognitive abilities play an important role throughout their academic career, but recent studies highlight the negative impacts of aggression, inattention, and impulsivity on academic success. These behaviors and traits are central to most externalizing (EXT) and neurodevelopmental (NDD) problems, which are substantially genetically influenced. We examined the mechanisms by which high levels of genetic predispositions to EXT and NDD problems associate with elevated mental health symptoms and subsequently lead to lower levels of academic achievement in two developmental pe

Electromagnetic Transduction Therapy (EMTT) Enhances Tenocyte Regenerative Potential: Evidence for Senolytic-like Effects and Matrix Remodeling.

Tendinopathies are a significant challenge in musculoskeletal medicine, with current treatments showing variable efficacy. Electromagnetic transduction therapy (EMTT) has emerged as a promising therapeutic approach, but its biological effects on tendon cells remain largely unexplored. Here, we investigated the effects of EMTT on primary cultured human tenocytes' behavior and functions in vitro, focusing on cellular responses, senescence-related pathways, and molecular mechanisms. Primary cultures of human tenocytes were established from semitendinosus tendon biopsies of patients undergoing ant

The disruptive effects of methylphenidate treatment on circadian rhythm in adult female zebrafish and epigenetic transmission of its negative effects to offspring.

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a prevalent condition characterized by persistent inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity, often leading to significant impairments in daily functioning. Numerous medications have been developed to manage ADHD, with methylphenidate (commonly known as Ritalin or Concerta) being the most widely used active compound. While methylphenidate (MPH) effectively improves attention, focus, and emotional regulation, its long-term use can lead to behavioral issues such as increased vigilance-stress response and anxiety, as well as physical side effect
