An intelligent decision-making system for embryo transfer in reproductive technology: a machine learning-based approach.

Infertility has emerged as a significant public health concern, with assisted reproductive technology (ART) is a last-resort treatment option. However, ART's efficacy is limited by significant financial cost and physical discomfort. The aim of this study is to build Machine learning (ML) decision-support models to predict the optimal range of embryo numbers to transfer, using data from infertile couples identified through literature reviews. Binary classification models were developed to classify cases into two groups: those transferring two or fewer embryos and those transferring three or fou

Machine learning-based model for behavioural analysis in rodents applied to the forced swim test.

The Forced Swim Test (FST) is a widely used preclinical model for assessing antidepressant efficacy, studying stress response, and evaluating depressive-like behaviours in rodents. Over the last 10 years, more than 5500 scientific articles reporting the use of the FST have been published. Despite its widespread use, the FST behaviours are still manually scored, resulting in a labor-intensive and time-consuming process that is prone to human bias and variability. Despite eliminating some biases, existing automated systems are costly and typically only able to distinguish between immobility and

Breathable soft bioelectronics for enhanced automatic detection of obstructive sleep apnea.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common sleep disorder that affects 1-5 % of children, with a notably higher prevalence among those with cleft lip/palate and dentofacial deformities. Early diagnosis in these populations is essential; however, access to polysomnography is often limited due to its high cost, technical complexity, and associated discomfort. Here, we introduce a wireless, soft, and breathable bioelectronic system for detecting OSA. This wearable device features a perforated, deformable structure that improves skin conformity, facilitates sweat removal, and minimizes motion artif

Feasibility of improving vocal fold pathology image classification with synthetic images generated by DDPM-based GenAI: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Voice disorders (VD) are often linked to vocal fold structural pathologies (VFSP). Laryngeal imaging plays a vital role in assessing VFSPs and VD in clinical and research settings, but challenges like scarce and imbalanced datasets can limit the generalizability of findings. Denoising Diffusion Probabilistic Models (DDPMs), a subtype of Generative AI, has gained attention for its ability to generate high-quality and realistic synthetic images to address these challenges. PURPOSE: This study explores the feasibility of improving VFSP image classification by generating synthetic ima

Post-Stroke Fine Hand Motion Intention Recognition Based on sEMG Decomposition and Residual Spiking Neural Networks.

Fine motor dysfunction of the hand severely impacts activities of daily living in stroke survivors. Accurate decoding of motion intentions from surface electromyography (sEMG) is critical for enabling survivors to participate actively in robot-assisted rehabilitation. Motion intention recognition methods using motor unit spike trains (MUSTs) derived from sEMG decomposition have demonstrated superior performance compared to conventional sEMG-based methods. However, these methods inadequately leverage the inherent spatiotemporal sparse coding efficiency of MUSTs and the full potential of sEMG de

Deep Learning-Based Assessment of Brainstem Volume Changes in Spinocerebellar Ataxia Type 2 (SCA2): A Study on Patients and Preclinical Subjects.

Spinocerebellar ataxia type 2 (SCA2) is a neurodegenerative disorder marked by progressive brainstem and cerebellar atrophy, leading to gait ataxia. Quantifying this atrophy in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is critical for tracking disease progression in both symptomatic patients and preclinical subjects. However, manual segmentation of brainstem subregions (mesencephalon, pons, and medulla) is time-consuming and prone to human error. This work presents an automated deep learning framework to assess brainstem atrophy in SCA2. Using T1-weighted MRI scans from patients, preclinical carriers,

Novel fusion architecture of multi-location blood flow sounds for arteriovenous fistula stenosis diagnosis.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Arteriovenous fistula (AVF) is a surgical intervention that establishes an artificial conduit between an artery and a vein, which is essential for hemodialysis treatment. The blood flow sounds has the potential to diagnose AVF stenosis. The research primarily addresses two critical questions: whether there is stenosis within the vascular pathway, and the precise location of the stenosis within the vascular pathway. However, most existing studies focus only on the anastomosis site using single-location acoustic data. This approach fails to fully leverage the acoustic i

SPR-based refractive index sensor design with grated Au-ZnS for dengue detection using machine learning.

In this paper, we propose a Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) fiber optic refractive index (RI) sensor. It consists of a multi-mode fiber (MMF) sensor with a bi-metallic nanostructure with Gold (Au) and Zinc Sulphide (ZnS) as the plasmonic sensing layer. The effect of the design parameter variation is evaluated to achieve the maximum wavelength sensitivity (WS). The testing sample's RI is taken from 1.34 to 1.40. We found that RI sensitivity varies non-linearly from 9000 to 18,000 nm/RIU. This sensor is additionally capable of detecting the dengue virus with a highest WS of 14285.71 nm/RIU for t

Active Neural Network Control for a Wearable Upper Limb Rehabilitation Exoskeleton Robot Driven by Pneumatic Artificial Muscles.

Pneumatic artificial muscle (PAM) has been widely used in rehabilitation and other fields as a flexible and safe actuator. In this paper, a PAM-actuated wearable exoskeleton robot is developed for upper limb rehabilitation. However, accurate modeling and control of the PAM are difficult due to complex hysteresis. To solve this problem, this paper proposes an active neural network method for hysteresis compensation, where a neural network (NN) is utilized as the hysteresis compensator and unscented Kalman filtering is used to estimate the weights and approximation error of the NN in real time.

Explainability of CNN-based Alzheimer's disease detection from online handwriting.

With over 55 million people globally affected by dementia and nearly 10 million new cases reported annually, Alzheimer's disease is a prevalent and challenging neurodegenerative disorder. Despite significant advancements in machine learning techniques for Alzheimer's disease detection, the widespread adoption of deep learning models raises concerns about their explainability. The lack of explainability in deep learning models for online handwriting analysis is a critical gap in the literature in the context of Alzheimer's disease detection. This paper addresses this challenge by interpreting p

Deep learning analysis of fMRI data for predicting Alzheimer's Disease: A focus on convolutional neural networks and model interpretability.

The early detection of Alzheimer's Disease (AD) is thought to be important for effective intervention and management. Here, we explore deep learning methods for the early detection of AD. We consider both genetic risk factors and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data. However, we found that the genetic factors do not notably enhance the AD prediction by imaging. Thus, we focus on building an effective imaging-only model. In particular, we utilize data from the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI), employing a 3D Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) to analyze fMRI scans

A feasibility study using quantitative and interpretable histological analyses of celiac disease for automated cell type and tissue area classification.

Histological assessment is essential for the diagnosis and management of celiac disease. Current scoring systems, including modified Marsh (Marsh-Oberhuber) score, lack inter-pathologist agreement. To address this unmet need, we aimed to develop a fully automated, quantitative approach for histology characterisation of celiac disease. Convolutional neural network models were trained using pathologist annotations of hematoxylin and eosin-stained biopsies of celiac disease mucosa and normal duodenum to identify cells, tissue and artifact regions. Biopsies of duodenal mucosa of varying celiac dis
