Skull reconstruction is an important and challenging task in craniofacial surgery planning, forensic investigation and anthropological studies. Existing methods typically reconstruct approximating surfaces that regard corresponding points on the target skull as soft constraints, thus incurring non-zero error even for non-defective parts and high overall reconstruction error. This paper proposes a novel geometric reconstruction method that non-rigidly registers an interpolating reference surface that regards corresponding target points as hard constraints, thus achieving low reconstruction erro

OBJECTIVES: Recently, multiphase postmortem computed tomography angiography (MPMCTA) has been proven as a reliable tool in the diagnosis of vascular pathology, while its potential efficiency in the detection of soft tissue lesions is ignored. In this study, we have evaluated the overall diagnostic value of MPMCTA in the diagnosis of blunt traumatic deaths in selected cases to determine its additional advantages and limitations in order to identify its potential applications.
METHODS: This prospective study examined 14 decedents presented to the Department of Legal Medicine of Hamburg Universi

The Musée Dupuytren was a Parisian pathology museum established in 1835. This museum hosted 3 skulls with severe craniofacial lesions initially tagged as aggressive forms of tinea capitis. The aim of this study was to investigate these specimens and discuss the initial diagnosis. Historical investigations were conducted based on the biographic data from the tags of the 3 skulls and entries on the catalog of the museum. Age was determined using dentition and the patency of cranial base synchondroses. The computed tomography scans were performed using standard medical devices. The 3 skulls were

A 60-year-old man with chronic hepatitis C was referred to our hospital with significantly elevated total protein and serum IgM (9,500 mg/dl) levels identified via a routine checkup. Blood examination revealed increased serum IgM-monoclonal protein and serum-soluble IL-2 receptor (sIL2R) levels. Computed tomography and fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography revealed pulmonary masses, abnormal soft tissue masses surrounding the bilateral kidneys, and thickened mucous membrane of the bladder with high fluorodeoxyglucose uptake. Pathological examination of the pulmonary mass revealed inf

Nondestructive three-dimensional (3D) micromorphological imaging technique is essential for hepatic alveolar echinococcosis (HAE) disease to determine its damage level and early diagnosis, assess relative drug therapy and optimize treatment strategies. However, the existing morphological researches of HAE mainly depend on the conventional CT, MRI, or ultrasound in hospitals, unfortunately confronting with the common limit of imaging resolution and sensitivity, especially for tiny or early HAE lesions. Now we presented a phase-retrieval-based synchrotron X-ray phase computed tomography (PR-XPCT

BACKGROUND: Primary lymphedema represents a condition which affects the lymph vessels and their cells without any pathologic patient history leading to soft tissue swelling. They are described in the literature three types: congenital primary lymphedema, or Milroy disease, lymphedema praecox, which occurs in puberty, and lymphedema tarda, when, the same symptoms, develop over 35 years old patients. The aim of this paper is to present a modified Kimmoth's original procedure for a praecox lymphedema by introducing an omental flap in the resorptive area.

OBJECTIVES: Mucous retention cysts (MRCs) of the maxillary sinuses are incidental findings in radiographs of the oral and maxillofacial structures. These cysts usually appear as rounded, dome-shaped, and soft-tissue masses, most often on the floor of the maxillary sinus. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of maxillary antral MRC and the effect of seasonal variation, sex and age in cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this simple, nonrandomized, cross-sectional study, CBCT images of patients were reviewed to evaluate the prevalence of MRCs a

CLINICAL PROBLEM: Intracerebral cysts are common findings in imaging of the neurocranium and are not always clinically significant. The pathological spectrum of intracerebral cysts is, however, very broad and in addition to incidental findings includes developmental disorders, malformation tumors, primary and secondary neoplasms and infectious etiologies, such as cerebral abscess formation, cysticercosis or residuals after congenital cytomegalovirus infections. Intracerebral cystic defects may be caused by inflammatory central nervous system (CNS) diseases, such as multiple sclerosis as well a

A well-defined, tortuous, and tubular soft tissue opaque structure has been observed within the left mid abdominal cavity in digital radiographs of some cats. Authors hypothesized that this radiographic "spaghetti sign" is a predictor for spleno-systemic collateral circulation. The purpose of this multicenter, retrospective, descriptive study was to further characterize radiographic "spaghetti signs" in a group of cats and compare these signs with results of ultrasonography or computed tomography (CT). A multiinstitutional database was reviewed for radiographic reports describing the presence

Since its introduction, susceptibility-weighted-magnetic resonance imaging (SW-MRI) has shown the potential to overcome the insensitivity of MRI to calcification. Previous studies reporting the diagnostic performance of SW-MRI and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for the detection of calcifications are inconsistent and based on single-institution designs. To our knowledge, this is the first meta-analysis on SW-MRI, determining the potential of SW-MRI to detect calcifications. Two independent investigators searched MEDLINE, EMBASE and Web of Science for eligible diagnostic accuracy studies, whi

Craniosynostosis, the premature fusion of one or more cranial sutures, leads to grossly abnormal head shapes and pressure elevations within the brain caused by these deformities. To date, accepted treatments for craniosynostosis involve improving surgical skull shape aesthetics. However, the relationship between improved head shape and brain structure after surgery has not been yet established. Typically, clinical standard care involves the collection of diagnostic medical computed tomography (CT) imaging to evaluate the fused sutures and plan the surgical treatment. CT is known to provide ver

Central venous catheter insertion and cancer represent some of the important predisposing factors for deep venous thrombosis (DVT). DVT usually develops in the lower extremities, and venous thrombosis of the upper extremities is uncommon. Early diagnosis and treatment of deep venous thrombosis are of importance, because it is a precursor of complications such as pulmonary embolism and postthrombotic syndrome. A 47-year-old woman visited our department with painful swelling on the left side of her neck. Initial examination revealed swelling of the region extending from the left neck to the shou

Using molecular dynamics simulations, we study computational self-assembly of one-component three-dimensional dodecagonal (12-fold) quasicrystals in systems with two-length-scale potentials. Existing criteria for three-dimensional quasicrystal formation are quite complicated and rather inconvenient for particle simulations. So to localize numerically the quasicrystal phase, one should usually simulate over a wide range of system parameters. We show how to universally localize the parameter values at which dodecagonal quasicrystal order may appear for a given particle system. For that purpose,

With the advent of single-sided hearing loss increasingly being treated with cochlear implantation, bone conduction implants are reserved for cases of conductive and mixed hearing loss with greater complexity. The BoneBridge (BB, MED-EL, Innsbruck, Austria) is an active fully implantable device with no attenuation of sound energy through soft tissue. However, the floating mass transducer (FMT) part of the device is very bulky, which limits insertion in complicated ears. In this study, 3D printed temporal bones of patients were used to study its utility in preoperative planning on complicated c

The incidence of colon ischemia has increased in recent years, and is associated with high morbidity and mortality. The typical presentations of colon ischemia include abdominal pain, bloody diarrhea, and in severe case, ileus, fever and peritonitis. Here, we document a rare case of colon ischemia presenting with subcutaneous and intramuscular emphysema of the thigh. A 76-year-old woman presented to the emergency department for left thigh pain for three days. Physical examination revealed tenderness without obvious crepitus, erythema or swelling over the left groin area and a soft abdomen with

INTRODUCTION: Melorheostosis is a rare benign sclerosing dysplasia affecting bone, which causes significant morbidity in the form of pain and restriction of joint movement. Treatment options are varied, and recurrence is common after surgical treatment. Choosing the most appropriate treatment option in the management of a recurrent case is challenging, with very little supporting evidence in literature owing to the rarity of the disease. We hereby present a case of recurrent melorheostosis involving the knee; discuss treatment options and the rationale of our treatment.

The selection of materials for orbital wall reconstruction has been a matter of debate. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of an acellular allogenic dermal matrix (ADM) as an orbital wall reconstruction material and to compare the results of orbital wall reconstruction with the ADM to those of reconstruction with the more widely used absorbable mesh plate and porous polyethylene. We retrospectively reviewed the clinical charts and computed tomography images of 73 patients who underwent orbital reconstruction at 1 institution between March 2013 and February 2014. In the ADM group, t

INTRODUCTION: Isolated renal arterial perforation is a rare consequence of blunt abdominal trauma. Meticulous surgical control of retroperitoneal active bleeding is difficult due to oozing of soft connective tissue, the deep position of operative field, and the presence of friable vascular tissue. Therefore, endovascular treatment is often preferred.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: An 83-year-old man was transferred to our trauma center due to retroperitoneal active bleeding after a car accident, in which his right upper abdomen struck the steering wheel. Contrast-enhanced abdominal computed tomography
