Genetic counseling in adult polycystic kidney disease.

We evaluated 22 patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) due to adult polycystic kidney disease (APKD) to assess their knowledge of the hereditary nature of the condition and to determine whether they received adequate genetic counseling. Patients were evaluated by means of a questionnaire and a review of their medical records. Only 5 of 22 (23%) knew their disorder was hereditary at the time of diagnosis, and in only 4 (18%) was genetic counseling suggested. In no instance had proband and spouse received genetic counseling together. Diagnostic studies of children at risk were rarely sugge

Service users' perspectives on primary eye care services following performance-based financing in Rwanda: an exploratory qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Visual impairment is a major global public health concern, disproportionately affecting populations in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), where access to eye care services remains limited. In 2019, the Rwandan Ministry of Health integrated eye care services into the Performance-Based Financing (PBF) framework to improve accessibility, service quality, and utilization. However, service users' perspectives on this initiative remain underexplored. This study aimed to examine service users' perceptions of accessibility, quality, affordability, satisfaction, and challenges in acc

Measuring What Matters: Patient Perspectives on Success and Recovery After Nerve Injury.

PURPOSE: Peripheral nerve injuries have profound consequences for physical, psychological, and social functioning. Advances have improved outcomes; however, patients frequently experience residual symptoms and incomplete recovery. Traditional measures of success emphasize clinician-defined benchmarks, which may not fully capture the lived experience of recovery. This study explores how patients define "success" after nerve reconstruction, how these definitions align or diverge from those used by clinicians, and the contextual factors that shape patient perceptions of recovery. METHODS: A qual

Shifting the narrative: reframing paediatric palliative care to enable earlier engagement.

BACKGROUND: Paediatric palliative care (PPC) provides holistic support for babies, children and young people with chronic and complex conditions and their families when facing uncertainty about the future. Although early PPC involvement improves symptom management, quality of life and shared decision-making, referral often occurs late. Misconceptions that equate PPC with end-of-life care, alongside clinicians' discomfort and concerns about diminishing hope, contribute to these delays. Communication is a modifiable barrier, and applying framing science may help clinicians introduce PPC earlier

Pharmacist-provided SARS-CoV-2 testing targeting a majority-Hispanic community during the early COVID-19 pandemic: Results of a patient perception survey.

BACKGROUND: Racial and ethnic minority groups are disproportionally represented among U.S. coronavirus disease (COVID-19) cases, owing to long-standing systemic inequities in the social determinants of health. Among Hispanic populations, a lack of access to testing sites has resulted in delayed time to diagnosis, risking increased spread within high-risk communities. The accessibility and expertise of community pharmacists support expanded pharmacist roles in public health and pandemic response, including point-of-care (POC) diagnostic testing. OBJECTIVE: To determine the local impact of comm

Point-of-Care Ultrasound Training: An Assessment of Interns' Needs and Barriers to Training.

Background and objective The use of point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) is generally on the rise worldwide. However, as the epidemiology of diseases and the approach to their management vary internationally, POCUS may not be universally applicable. The resources available for medical education are generally limited. Thus, when considering the development of a training program during the internship year, we sought to determine interns' perceptions of the applicability of POCUS to clinical practice, the current skill gaps, and barriers to training. Methods  A validated questionnaire was distributed
