Cannabis use and bone mineral density: NHANES 2007-2010.

UNLABELLED: Cannabis use is rising in the USA. Its relationship to cannabinoid signaling in bone cells implies its use could affect bone mineral density (BMD) in the population. In a national survey of people ages 20-59, we found no association between self-reported cannabis use and BMD of the hip or spine. INTRODUCTION: Cannabis is the most widely used illegal drug in the USA, and its recreational use has recently been approved in several US states. Cannabinoids play a role in bone homeostasis. We aimed to determine the association between cannabis use and BMD in US adults. METHODS: In the

ANABOLIC BONE WINDOW WITH WEEKLY TERIPARATIDE THERAPY IN POSTMENOPAUSAL OSTEOPOROSIS: A PILOT STUDY.

OBJECTIVE: Osteoporosis is a major public health problem that reduces bone strength and increases fracture risk. Teriparatide is an established and the only currently available anabolic therapy for the treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis (PMO) with a recommended daily dose of 20 μg given subcutaneously. However, there are limited data regarding the long-term effect of once-weekly teriparatide therapy on bone mineral density (BMD), bone turnover markers (BTMs), and anabolic bone window. METHODS: In this prospective observational study, 26 patients with PMO were treated with weekly teripar

ADDING VFA TO DXA IDENTIFIES FRACTURE RISK IN A WAY NOT DUPLICATED BY OTHER MEASURES.

OBJECTIVE: Published studies have demonstrated that adding vertebral fracture assessment (VFA) to dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) identifies more patients with increased fracture risk than DXA alone. But who needs VFA? This study attempts to determine if some test other than VFA could duplicate the additional information obtained by performing VFA on all first-time patients. This study looked at the Fracture Risk Assessment Tool (FRAX), height loss, age, documented back pain, and nonvertebral fragility fractures. METHODS: VFA was performed on 1,259 (all) DXA patients at their first vis

Systematic review and network meta-analysis on the relative efficacy of osteoporotic medications: men with prostate cancer on continuous androgen-deprivation therapy to reduce risk of fragility fractures.

Androgen-deprivation therapy (ADT) is an effective treatment for men with advanced prostate cancer, but loss of bone mineral density (BMD) is a major risk factor for fractures. This review compared the efficacy of available treatments to provide prescribing guidance to healthcare professionals. This is the first review to compare the effectiveness of different osteoporotic treatments (bisphosphonates, denosumab, toremifene, and raloxifene) on BMD in patients with non-metastatic prostate cancer on ADT using network meta-analysis. Results suggest that all evaluated treatments are effective in im

Vitamin D status and parathyroid hormone levels in relation to bone mineral density in apparently healthy Syrian adults.

UNLABELLED: Vitamin D deficiency was highly prevalent in this study. More than half of the participants with vitamin D level less than 5 ng/mL had secondary hyperparathyroidism, which implicated a major bone health concern. After adjustment for potential predictors, parathyroid hormone (PTH) explained about 3 % of the variance in total hip bone mineral density (BMD). PURPOSE: Bone mineral density (BMD) is known to be influenced by serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25OHD) and intact parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels. The relationship between 25OHD and PTH with BMD has not been well documented in Syria

Biomechanical evaluation of fixation strength among different sizes of pedicle screws using the cortical bone trajectory: what is the ideal screw size for optimal fixation?

BACKGROUND: The cortical bone trajectory (CBT) has attracted attention as a new minimally invasive technique for lumbar instrumentation by minimizing soft-tissue dissection. Biomechanical studies have demonstrated the superior fixation capacity of CBT; however, there is little consensus on the selection of screw size, and no biomechanical study has elucidated the most suitable screw size for CBT. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the effect of screw size on fixation strength and to clarify the ideal size for optimal fixation using CBT. METHOD: A total of 720 analyses on CBT scr

The Influence of High-Impact Exercise on Cortical and Trabecular Bone Mineral Content and 3D Distribution Across the Proximal Femur in Older Men: A Randomized Controlled Unilateral Intervention.

Regular exercisers have lower fracture risk, despite modest effects of exercise on bone mineral content (BMC). Exercise may produce localized cortical and trabecular bone changes that affect bone strength independently of BMC. We previously demonstrated that brief, daily unilateral hopping exercises increased femoral neck BMC in the exercise leg versus the control leg of older men. This study evaluated the effects of these exercises on cortical and trabecular bone and its 3D distribution across the proximal femur, using clinical CT. Fifty healthy men had pelvic CT scans before and after the ex

Fine mapping of bone structure and strength QTLs in heterogeneous stock rat.

We previously demonstrated that skeletal structure and strength phenotypes vary considerably in heterogeneous stock (HS) rats. These phenotypes were found to be strongly heritable, suggesting that the HS rat model represents a unique genetic resource for dissecting the complex genetic etiology underlying bone fragility. The purpose of this study was to identify and localize genes associated with bone structure and strength phenotypes using 1524 adult male and female HS rats between 17 to 20 weeks of age. Structure measures included femur length, neck width, head width; femur and lumbar spine (

Implications of premature ovarian failure on bone turnover markers and bone mineral density.

INTRODUCTION: Premature ovarian failure (POF) is the cessation of ovarian function before the age of 40. The loss of ovarian function, whether premature or not, has an overwhelming impact on female skeletal health, leading to an increased risk of developing osteoporosis because of the lengthened time of exposure to reduced estrogen. The objective of this study was to compare the implications of premature ovarian failure on bone turnover markers and bone mineral density in patients under the age of 40. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixty-one patients with a diagnosis of POF were selected for this pro

Histology of 8 atypical femoral fractures: remodeling but no healing.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The pathophysiology behind bisphosphonate-associated atypical femoral fractures remains unclear. Histological findings at the fracture site itself may provide clues. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Between 2008 and 2013, we collected bone biopsies including the fracture line from 4 complete and 4 incomplete atypical femoral fractures. 7 female patients reported continuous bisphosphonate use for 10 years on average. 1 patient was a man who was not using bisphosphonates. Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry of the hip and spine showed no osteoporosis in 6 cases. The bone biopsies were
