Going beyond appearance: Embodiment throughout adolescence and its associations with identity functioning and eating behaviors.

The complex relationship between body (dis)satisfaction, identity, and disordered eating in adolescence has been highlighted in previous studies. However, longitudinal research on this interplay using a holistic approach in assessing embodiment is lacking. The current study used three-wave longitudinal data (T1: N = 923; 59.6 % female; Mage = 16.19, SD = 1.31, range = 13-21 years) to examine the development of embodiment during adolescence and to explore its (temporal) associations with identity, eating disorder symptoms, and eating competence. First, cross-lagged analyses revealed that embodi

The development of ambivalent sexism: Proposals for an expanded model.

The United Nations' Goals for Sustainable Development highlight gender inequality as a pervasive problem around the world. Developmental psychologists can help us understand the development and consequences of sexism in people's lives. I highlight ambivalent sexism theory as a promising framework for this work; and I offer recommendations for expanding the theory. Ambivalent sexism theory distinguishes between hostile sexism and benevolent sexism as complementary processes perpetuating and maintaining men's dominance and heteronormativity in society. I summarize how these two forms of sexism e

Co-producing an inclusive-care model for young people transitioning from adolescent eating disorder services to adult care: A qualitative study protocol for Transition for Eating Disorder Youth intervention.

Eating disorders (EDs) present a chronic issue to child paediatric mental health services due to their high mortality and relapse rates. The transition from Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services to Adult Mental Health Services is a particularly high-risk period for young people with EDs given their high vulnerability to change, which can negatively impact treatment outcomes. However, there is lack of evidence on the feasibility of inclusive and youth-specific interventions that address the multiple and complex needs of this group during their transition to adult care. This proposed study

Early Life Stress, Frontoamygdala Connectivity, and Biological Aging in Adolescence: A Longitudinal Investigation.

Early life stress (ELS) may accelerate frontoamygdala development related to socioemotional processing, serving as a potential source of resilience. Whether this circuit is associated with other proposed measures of accelerated development is unknown. In a sample of young adolescents, we examined the relations among ELS, frontoamygdala circuitry during viewing of emotional faces, cellular aging as measured by telomere shortening, and pubertal tempo. We found that greater cumulative severity of ELS was associated with stronger negative coupling between bilateral centromedial amygdala and the ve

A Clinical Pathway to Standardize Care of Children With Delirium in Pediatric Inpatient Settings.

Pediatric delirium is an important comorbidity of medical illness in inpatient pediatric care that has lacked a consistent approach for detection and management. A clinical pathway (CP) was developed to address this need. Pediatric delirium contributes significantly to morbidity, mortality, and costs of inpatient care of medically ill children and adolescents. Screening for delirium in hospital settings with validated tools is feasible and effective in reducing delirium and improving outcomes; however, multidisciplinary coordination is required for implementation. The workgroup, composed of in

Early traumatization and psychopathy in female and male juvenile offenders.

Childhood traumatization is expected to have a significant impact on the development of antisocial and aggressive behavior in adulthood. Psychopathy as a syndrome that can predict future violent and aggressive behavior in adults is therefore believed to be associated with early traumatization. The association between early childhood victimization and violence might at least be mediated through psychopathy. The present study examined the relationship between early emotional, physical or sexual trauma and neglect and psychopathy in incarcerated delinquent female and male juveniles using the Chil

In situ breast carcinoma after treatment during adolescence for thyroid cancer with radioiodine.

We reviewed the courses of patients treated during childhood or adolescence for thyroid cancer to estimate the frequency of, and to identify possible risk factors for, the occurrence of second malignant tumors in this population. We identified all patients treated for thyroid cancer in a cohort of 1,406 pediatric cancer patients who were diagnosed prior to 20 years of age during the period January 1, 1960 through December 31, 1988 and who were treated at Roswell Park Cancer Institute. Twelve patients were treated for thyroid cancer, of whom nine were women. In situ breast carcinoma was diagnos

Comorbid psychopathology and clinical symptomatology in children and adolescents with obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Comorbid psychopathology in children and adolescents with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) has been investigated in a number of studies over the last twenty years. The aim of the present study was to investigate the phenomenology of illness and broader psychopathology in a group of Greek children and adolescents with OCD. The investigation of parental psychopathology in children and adolescents with OCD was a secondary aim of the present study. We studied 31 children and adolescents with OCD (n=31, age range 8-15 years) and their parents (n=62, age range 43-48 years) and compared to childre

Association of Left Ventricular Outflow Tract Obstruction with Left Atrial Remodeling and Dysfunction in Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy: A Three-Dimensional Echocardiography and Left Atrial Strain Study.

Adolescents with major depressive disorder (MDD) and non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) face serious challenges to their mental and physical health. The development of this condition is influenced by genetic, environmental, and brain development factors. In this study, we used the Morphometric Inverse Divergence Gradient Network (MIND-Gd) for the first time to explore brain structural network abnormalities and their transcriptional mechanisms in adolescents with MDD and NSSI. A total of 241 adolescents with MDD participated in this study. Among them, 134 had NSSI, while 107 did not. Using high-re

Decision tree-based prediction of 5-year weight trajectories after bariatric surgery in adolescents and young adults: a retrospective cohort study from France and Sweden.

BACKGROUND: Metabolic-bariatric surgery is an efficient therapy in selected adolescents with severe obesity. However, predicting the postoperative weight loss is challenging. A machine learning calculator predicting 5-year weight loss trajectory has been developed in adults, based on seven preoperative features. The aim of the present study was to adapt and test it in adolescents. METHODS: Retrospective cohort study in patients aged 12-20 years undergoing Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB), sleeve gastrectomy (SG), or adjustable gastric band (AGB) in France and Sweden between 2001 and 2022. Do traumatic events and substance use co-occur during adolescence? Testing three causal etiologic hypotheses.

BACKGROUND: Why do potentially traumatic events (PTEs) and substance use (SU) so commonly co-occur during adolescence? Causal hypotheses developed from the study of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and substance use disorder (SUD) among adults have not yet been subject to rigorous theoretical analysis or empirical tests among adolescents with the precursors to these disorders: PTEs and SU. Establishing causality demands accounting for various factors (e.g. genetics, parent education, race/ethnicity) that distinguish youth endorsing PTEs and SU from those who do not, a step often overlooked

Neurobehavioral correlates of inhibitory control in youth at-risk for early low-level alcohol use initiation: neuroimaging findings from the ABCD study.

INTRODUCTION: Adolescent alcohol experimentation is a rising concern given its links to future problematic drug use. Difficulty with inhibitory control (i.e., the ability to suppress unwanted behaviors) is a well-known risk factor for early alcohol use onset. Nevertheless, little is known about the neurobiology of inhibitory control during early development (i.e., preadolescence), especially in relation to minimal early low-level alcohol use. The current study will reveal neural and behavioral differences in inhibitory control that differentiate youth will go on to engage in low-level alcohol

Family History of Substance Use and Stressful Life Events Impact Adolescent Maturation of Cerebral White Matter.

Family history (FH) of substance use disorders (SUDs) and stressful life events (SLEs) are known risk factors for SUDs in adolescents and young adults. Cross-sectional studies suggest that FH and SLEs affect adolescent white matter (WM) development and form abnormal WM patterns. Here, we examined the effects of FH, SLEs and their interaction on WM integrity in youths in the Adolescent Cognitive Brain Development (ABCD) study at baseline and 2- and 4-year follow-ups. ABCD youths (N = 8939, age ± SD = 9.9 ± 0.6 years, 4302 female) completed baseline diffusion tensor imaging, of which 5661 repeat
