Human infection by Brucella melitensis: an outbreak attributed to contact with infected goats.

Although several outbreaks of Brucella melitensis infection have been reported among laboratory workers or goat cheese consumers, outbreaks related to rural labour have been rarely studied. An outbreak of human brucellosis among farm workers of Argentina was studied and revealed a close relationship with an epidemic of caprine abortions which occurred shortly before on the same farm. High rates of B. melitensis infection were found among goats. Active brucellosis was diagnosed in 33 subjects (14 with positive blood culture for B. melitensis), while other 27 did not show evidence of illness. Wh

Serodiagnosis of leishmaniasis.

Leishmaniasis is a spectrum of diseases ranging in severity from cutaneous (CL), post-kala-azar dermal (PKDL), and diffuse cutaneous (DCL) to mucocutaneous (MCL) and visceral (VL) infections that are endemic in 86 tropical and subtropical countries around the world, accounting for 75,000 deaths per year. Different forms of leishmaniases are generally caused by different distinct species of Leishmania having a digenetic life cycle alternating between an aflagellated amastigote form replicative within the macrophages of the host and a flagellated promastigote form that multiplies within the gut

Invasive Meningococcal Meningitis Serogroup C Outbreak in Northwest Nigeria, 2015 - Third Consecutive Outbreak of a New Strain.

BACKGROUND: In northwest Nigeria in 2013 and 2014, two sequential, localized outbreaks of meningitis were caused by a new strain of Neisseria meningitidis serogroup C (NmC). In 2015, an outbreak caused by the same novel NmC strain occurred over a wider geographical area, displaying different characteristics to the previous outbreaks. We describe cases treated by Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) in the 2015 outbreak. METHODS: From February 10 to June 8, 2015, data on cerebrospinal meningitis (CSM) cases and deaths were recorded on standardized line-lists from case management sites supported by M

Substance P involvement in the interaction between Streptococcus mutans and human aortic endothelial cells.

OBJECTIVES: Streptococcus mutans, a causative organism of dental caries, has also been implicated in the pathogenesis of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Substance P (SP) involvement in physiological and pathological processes within the cardiovascular system is currently the foci of research. The role of SP in modulating the human aortic endothelial cells (HAECs) response to S. mutans within the context of CVD pathogenesis has not been examined. This study aimed to investigate SP expression in S. mutans-stimulated HAECs and to clarify the role of SP in the interaction between S. mutans and HAECs

Cryptococcal meningitis due to Cryptococcus neoformans VNI in a koala (Phascolarctos cinereus) with progressive neurological disease.

Nearly all cases of cryptococcosis in koalas are caused by Cryptococcus gattii species complex. A rare case of meningitis due to Cryptococcus neoformans VNI/AFLP1 (abbreviated VNI) is described in a koala with nasal colonisation by both species complexes. An eight-year-old koala in a wildlife park presented for seizures and returned a positive latex cryptococcal antigen agglutination test. The koala was euthanased due to the severity of disease, and a post-mortem computed tomography study showed mild mucosal thickening of the right nasal turbinates. The necropsy also showed slightly turbid cis
