Organoid Models for Cancer Research-From Bed to Bench Side and Back.

Organoids are a new 3D ex vivo culture system that have been applied in various fields of biomedical research. First isolated from the murine small intestine, they have since been established from a wide range of organs and tissues, both in healthy and diseased states. Organoids genetically, functionally and phenotypically retain the characteristics of their tissue of origin even after multiple passages, making them a valuable tool in studying various physiologic and pathophysiologic processes. The finding that organoids can also be established from tumor tissue or can be engineered to recapit…

The biology of stress in cancer: Applying the biobehavioral framework to adolescent and young adult oncology research.

The stress response influences the development and trajectory of cancer through a host of complex neuroimmune mechanisms. Basic, translational, and clinical research has elucidated these biobehavioral connections and offers a new paradigm for scientific investigation and patient care. Using a biobehavioral approach could offer new diagnostic and therapeutic opportunities in oncology, and this approach will be particularly impactful for adolescent and young adult (AYA) patients with cancer. To date, nearly all biobehavioral oncology research has been done in the adult population. And yet, AYAs

Ethical Practices for Gaining Access for Research with Deaf Communities in South Africa: A Case of South African Sign Language.

Research ethics frameworks used in South Africa view Deafness from a biomedical perspective. Unfortunately, this could hinder research access to Deaf communities. Deaf-centric best practices draw from sociocultural perspectives instead. Motivated by this lack of Deaf-centric provisions for research with Deaf communities in the existing legal ethical frameworks in South Africa, this article examines best practices for gaining access to Deaf communities based on a broader study on South African Sign Language place names. The article synthesises ethical guidelines from literature and infuses them

Radiological protection in human research ethics using a case study: toward update of the ICRP Publication 62.

The benefits of biomedical research involving humans are well recognised, along with the need for conformity to international standards of science and ethics. When human research involves radiation imaging procedures or radiotherapy, an extra level of expert review should be provided from the point of view of radiological protection. The relevant publication of the International Commission for Radiological Protection (ICRP) is now three decades old and is currently undergoing an update. This paper aims to provoke discussions on how the risks of radiation dose and the benefits of research shoul…

Spatial-CITE-seq: spatially resolved high-plex protein and whole transcriptome co-mapping.

We present spatial-CITE-seq for high-plex protein and whole transcriptome co-mapping, which was firstly demonstrated for profiling 198 proteins and transcriptome in multiple mouse tissue types. It was then applied to human tissues to measure 283 proteins and transcriptome that revealed spatially distinct germinal center reaction in tonsil and early immune activation in skin at the COVID-19 mRNA vaccine injection site. Spatial-CITE-seq may find a range of applications in biomedical research.

Exploring integrated advice and avian influenza knowledge gaps by using a Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza outbreak simulation.

BACKGROUND: Initial evaluations of the COVID-19 pandemic suggested that broad multidisciplinary expertise is needed for an all of society pandemic response. However, it is unclear whether balanced, multi-perspective scientific advising is secured in separate disciplinary advisory committees. AIM: Our aim was to explore the potential of integrated advising among biomedical, societal and economic experts into pandemic response, using a simulation of a highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) outbreak. Additionally, we aimed to identify cross-cutting gaps in knowledge and expertise relevant for

Volatile Compound Emissions from Stereolithography Three-Dimensional Printed Cured Resin Models for Biomedical Applications.

Stereolithography three-dimensional printing is used increasingly in biomedical applications to create components for use in healthcare and therapy. The exposure of patients to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted from cured resins represents an element of concern in such applications. Here, we investigate the biocompatibility in relation to inhalation exposure of volatile emissions of three different cured commercial resins for use in printing a mouthpiece adapter for sampling exhaled breath. VOC emission rates were estimated based on direct analysis using a microchamber/thermal extracto

The placenta as a substitute for cancerous models.

The tissue distribution of various radiopharmaceuticals was investigated in Rhabdomyosarcoma-bearing rats and in pregnant rats during the period of rapid foetal and placental growth (days 17-19 of pregnancy). The results indicate that with the radiopharmaceuticals tested the uptake in placental tissue followed closely the data obtained with tumour tissue in Rhabdomyosarcoma-bearing rats (1). We describe here the parallels between cell replication in the placenta and in malignant tumours and propose that the placenta merits more attention in the field of biomedical research.

Advancing brain health equity with Indigenous peoples: A critical imperative.

Indigenous communities hold rich knowledges, cultural practices, and kinship networks that sustain cognitive resilience and nurture brain health across the life course. Yet these enduring strengths are often obscured by biomedical models that overlook the structural determinants of health-including the cumulative effects of colonization, educational inequity, and socioeconomic disadvantage-that diminish brain health. Accordingly, dementia disproportionately affects Indigenous populations globally, often presenting with earlier onset and higher prevalence compared to non-Indigenous groups. This

Curcumin Delivery Systems: From Importance and Microencapsulation Techniques to Molecular Docking and Dynamics for Rational Formulation Design.

Curcumin, a polyphenolic compound from Curcuma longa, has many biological effects, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anticancer, and neuroprotective properties. However, its use in food, pharmaceutical, and biomedical systems is limited owing to poor water solubility, chemical instability, fast metabolism, and very low oral bioavailability. To address these issues, various formulation strategies have been created. Microencapsulation is one of the most effective methods for improving the stability, bioaccessibility, and controlled release of curcumin. At the same time, computational too
