Early Childhood Outcomes in Severe Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia Treated with Fetoscopic Endoluminal Tracheal Occlusion (FETO) versus Non-FETO at a Single Center.

INTRODUCTION: Fetoscopic endoluminal tracheal occlusion (FETO) has demonstrated neonatal survival and pulmonary hypertension (PH) benefits in patients with severe congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH). This study describes early childhood outcomes of patients treated with FETO compared to a contemporary cohort of non-FETO patients. METHODS: A single center, retrospective cohort study evaluated patients with a prenatal diagnosis of isolated severe left CDH at a single center from September 2016 through January 2023. Severe CDH was defined as liver herniation with an ultrasound observed/expecte

Utilization of Paragonix LIVERguard® donor organ transport system for static hypothermic preservation of a multivisceral allograft.

BACKGROUND: Intestine transplants are highly sensitive to ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI). Static cold storage (SCS) is the standard for multivisceral (MVT) allograft preservation but carries known risks. While several devices have been developed for liver, lung, and heart graft preservation, there are no systems validated specifically for MVT grafts. We report the first use of the Paragonix LIVERguard® Donor Liver Transport System for hypothermic static preservation of a donation after brain death (DBD) MVT allograft, transported approximately 1363 miles. METHODS: The Paragonix LIVERguard®

Forsythoside E alleviates chronic unpredictable mild stress-induced depressive-like behaviors in mice: associations with blood-brain barrier integrity and neuroinflammatory changes in the prefrontal cortex.

RATIONALE: Persistent stress-related depression has increasingly been associated with neuroinflammatory activation and impairment of blood-brain barrier (BBB) function. Forsythoside E (FE), a phenylethanoid glycoside isolated from Forsythia suspensa, is known to exert anti-inflammatory and cytoprotective effects. OBJECTIVES: Given that its specific role in stress-related depressive states and associated BBB abnormalities remains insufficiently defined, this study aimed to evaluate whether FE could mitigate behavioral impairment and modulate the neurovascular inflammatory microenvironment in a

Culex mosquitoes in a French Guiana zoo: insights on species diversity, feeding habits, and parasitic associations.

BACKGROUND: French Guiana is home to one of the highest mosquito diversities in the world, with currently 242 species recorded, nearly half of them belonging to the genus Culex. These mosquitoes include vectors of human parasites and viruses, some of which are of significant public health concern. Understanding the host preferences of female Culex mosquitoes is essential but knowledge is still limited. The Zoo of French Guiana was chosen as an experimental site for its constant availability of diverse captive animals and a potential sentinel role for monitoring infectious diseases. METHODS: B

Bletilla striata polysaccharides alleviate metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease through enhancing hepatocyte RelA/ HNF1α signaling.

BACKGROUND: Bletilla striata polysaccharides (BSP) have antioxidant, immune regulation, and anti-fibrotic activities. However, the therapeutic effect and mechanisms underlying the action of BSP in metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) have not been fully understood. AIM: To investigate the therapeutic effects and mechanisms of BSP on MASLD by centering on the hepatocyte nuclear factor kappa B p65 (RelA)/hepatocyte nuclear factor-1 alpha (HNF1α) signaling. METHODS: A mouse model of MASLD was induced by feeding with a high-fat-diet (HFD) and a hepatocyte model of ste

Genes of filter-feeding species as a potential toolkit for monitoring microplastic impacts.

Microplastics (MPs) are ubiquitous in the marine environment and impact organisms at multiple levels. Understanding their actual effects on wild populations is urgently needed. This study develops a toolkit to monitor changes in gene expression induced by MPs in natural environments, focusing on filter-feeding and bioindicator species from diverse ecological and taxonomic groups. Six candidate genes -Caspase, HSP70, HSP90, PK, SOD, and VTG- and nine filter-feeding species -two branchiopods, one copepod, five bivalves and one fish- were selected based on differential expression in response to M

Does Non-Beneficial Nasogastric Tube Feeding Occur During End-of-Life Care? An Audit of Outcomes for Those with a Malnutrition Universal Screening Tool Score of 2.

Background: The consideration of artificial nutrition and hydration (ANH) is recommended for individuals with reduced nutritional intake. However, placing long-term nonoral feeding tubes is not appropriate in those with advanced dementia or if the individual is likely to die imminently-"within hours or days" (GMC, 2010;58). In some instances, the provision of ANH in the weeks leading up to death may be considered a "Non-Beneficial Treatment." Objective: To determine the extent to which "non-beneficial" nasogastric tube (NGT) feeding occurs at the end of life. Design: An audit of outcomes for i

Gastrostomy Tube Placement in Patients With Trisomy 13 and 18: Surgical Decision Making and Outcomes.

PURPOSE: Trisomy 13 (T13) and trisomy 18 (T18) are chromosomal abnormalities which portend high rates of feeding dysfunction and infant mortality risk. Although gastrostomy tube (GT) placement is commonly performed in this population, there is limited data assessing outcomes associated with this procedure. Our aim was to determine survival outcomes among GT and non-GT patients with T13/18. METHODS: We performed a retrospective cohort study of patients with T13 and T18 treated at our institution from 2005 through 2020. We compared baseline characteristics and survival data between GT and non-G
