Use of an interlocking nail-hybrid fixator construct for distal femoral deformity correction in three dogs.

Our purpose was to report the use of an interlocking nail-hybrid external fixator construct to correct distal femoral deformities in three dogs. Radiographs, computed tomography and a three-dimensional model were used to plan the surgical procedure. A femoral osteotomy or ostectomy was performed at the level of the centre of rotation of angulation in all three dogs. Angular and rotational deformities were corrected acutely. Distraction osteogenesis was performed to lengthen each femur postoperatively. All three dogs had additional anatomic abnormalities of the affected hindlimb complicating th

Renal excretion of phenol from physicians after nail matrix phenolization: an observational prospective study.

BACKGROUND: Animal studies have shown that many signs of acute poisoning result from phenol entry into the systemic circulation by absorptio … urinary phenol concentrations from physicians after performing chemical matrixectomy for ingrown toenails. RESULTS: The highest concentration of urinary phenol was measured at almost 10 mg/L within the first 2 h after exposure, and subsequently decreased approximately 1 mg/L every 2 h for the first 10 h post exposure. The levels dropped to 3 mg/L at 72 …

Presentation, microsurgical therapy, and clinical outcomes in three cases of expanding melanonychia of the nail unit in children.

The management of expanding melanonychia in childhood is controversial. Here, we present three cases and discuss their operating indications and reconstruction. Between January 1, 1995 and December 31, 2007, one boy and two girls, were operated for expanding melanonychia, involving the thumb, index finger or the middle finger. They were 2, 4, and 7 years at the time of surgery. A complete resection of the nail plate was performed followed by a direct finger reconstruction using a free short-pedicle vascularized nail flap of the toe. Histology showed a junctional nevus in all cases. The follow-

In situ melanoma of the nail unit in children: report of two cases in fair-skinned Caucasian children.

Nail melanoma in children is rarely reported in the literature, and all of the published cases were diagnosed in dark-skinned phototypes or in Asians. We report two cases of in situ nail matrix melanoma presenting as longitudinal melanonychia (LM) in fair-skinned children of Italian origin. Nail plate dermatoscopy revealed a brown background with lines of irregular color, spacing, and thickness in both cases. Histopathology of the excised lesions showed melanoma in situ. Clinical, dermatoscopic, and pathological criteria that permit clear differentiation of benign melanocytic activation or pro

Recommendations for the treatment of nail psoriasis in patients with moderate to severe psoriasis: a dermatology expert group consensus.

BACKGROUND: Nail involvement is common in psoriasis patients and is often associated with severe disease. Patients with nail psoriasis experience pain, functional impairment and social stigma, with significant restriction of daily activities and quality of life. However, nail psoriasis often goes untreated, as many physicians believe it is difficult to treat, despite the availability of effective treatment options. Clinical data and guidelines for managing and treating psoriasis patients with both skin and nail symptoms are limited. OBJECTIVE: To prepare recommendations for the management and

Detailed analysis of specific nail psoriasis features and their correlations with clinical parameters: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Occurrence rates of specific features of psoriatic nails, as well as the influence of variable clinical parameters on nail involvement in psoriasis, are not determined. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the frequency and characteristics of nail involvement in patients with psoriasis and determine the relationship between nail psoriasis and clinical parameters (age, gender, family history, clinical type, age of onset, duration, joint involvement). METHODS: 228 psoriatic patients, who had not received any systematic or topical antipsoriatic treatment for at least a year, were consecutively se…

Late symptomatic heterotopic ossification of the patellar tendon after medial parapatellar intramedullary nailing of the tibia.

This article describes a case of a 21-year old man who presented with symptomatic heterotopic ossification of the patellar tendon 3.5 years postinjury. The patient sustained an open tibia fracture during a fall and was treated by reamed intramedullary nailing through a medial paratendinous approach. Radiographic evidence of heterotopic ossification in the patellar tendon was first noted at the 4-week follow-up. He presented at 3.5 years postinjury with new-onset anterior knee pain and reported no interval trauma to the knee. Radiographs revealed a well-circumscribed area of calcification withi

Changes in the nail unit in patients with secondary lymphoedema identified using clinical, dermoscopic and ultrasound examination.

BACKGROUND: Secondary lymphoedema is characterized by lymphatic stasis that is often the result of a lymph node lesion. At advanced stages i … leuconychia were observed more frequently on the lymphoedematous limb. The ultrasound study of the nails of the thumb and the big toe did not reveal any differences in thickness of the different structures of the nail between the lymphoedema side and the opposite side. The nail matrix was longer on the lymphoedema side. CONCLUSIONS: Our study showed m …

Hemodynamic analysis of capillary in finger nail-fold using computational fluid dynamics and image estimation.

Red blood cell (RBC) dynamics in capillaries is a useful diagnostic tool for many diseases. Previous study showed that optical flow estimation (OFE) is capable of accurately calculating RBC velocities using image registration technique. The computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method is explored in this study to calculate the RBC velocity in capillaries of finger nail-fold for six cases. The two-dimensional capillary images were reconstructed to three-dimensional, assuming circular cross sections. The no-slip boundary conditions were applied on the vessel walls. The initial velocity of the RBC g

The nude mutant gene Foxn1 is a HOXC13 regulatory target during hair follicle and nail differentiation.

Among the Hox genes, homeobox C13 (Hoxc13) has been shown to be essential for proper hair shaft differentiation, as Hoxc13 gene-targeted (Hoxc13(tm1Mrc)) mice completely lack external hair. Because of the remarkable overt phenotypic parallels to the Foxn1(nu) (nude) mutant mice, we sought to determine whether Hoxc13 and forkhead box N1 (Foxn1) might act in a common pathway of hair follicle (HF) differentiation. We show that the alopecia exhibited by both the Hoxc13(tm1Mrc) and Foxn1(nu) mice is because of strikingly similar defects in hair shaft differentiation and that both mutants suffer fro

Mammary-digital-nail (MDN) syndrome: a novel phenotype maps to human chromosome 22q12.3-13.1.

Mammary-digital-nail syndrome is a novel phenotypic association consisting of anonychia onychodystrophy with hypoplasia or absence of distal phalanges in males and females, accompanied by juvenile hypertrophy of the breast in affected females. This newly described genetic trait presents an autosomal dominant inheritance pattern, with either reduced penetrance or germ-line mosaicism. Analysis of the pedigree, linkage studies followed by a genome-wide screen and by haplotype analysis defined the locus for the phenotype within a 12 cM (4.3 Mb) interval on chromosome 22q12.3-13.1. This chromosomal

A case of rheumatoid arthritis with bucillamine-induced yellow nail syndrome initially manifesting as pulmonary disease.

We report a case of a 67-year-old woman with rheumatoid arthritis with yellow nail syndrome (YNS) that was caused by bucillamine. All three signs (yellow fingernails, lymphatic edema, and bronchiectasis) of YNS manifested, with characteristic timing, first with the nails turning yellow after when bronchiectasis was noticed. We reviewed 10 case reports from Japan and compared the periods until the appearance of yellow nails after starting bucillamine treatment, as well as those until lung disease and leg edema appeared.

[Mid-third femoral shaft fracture in a patient with hypophosphatemic rickets treated with a locking centromedullary nail].

Residual deformities of hypophosphatemic rickets can be approached with a corrective osteotomy and fixation with a centromedullary nail, external fixators, Ilizarov devices, Kirschner's nails, cast devices, and plates, including epiphysiodesis. These methods may be used in case of fracture. The purpose of this work is to discuss the management of a 16-year-old patient with X-linked hypophosphatemic rickets at the end-stage of growth, who presented with a shaft fracture of the right femur, treated with alignment osteotomy and fixation, and alignment osteotomy of the contralateral femur in a sin…
