We have investigated the somatosensory and auditory representations in the nucleus basalis of the barn owl. In pigeons and finches, the nucleus basalis contains a representation of the beak and an auditory area. In the barn owl, the nucleus basalis also contains a complete somatotopic map of the head and body (as in the budgerigar), with a tonotopically organized auditory area in close proximity to the representation of the facial ruff and the preaural area. Recordings within and around the nucleus basalis revealed predominantly (about 80%) contralateral responses to somatic stimulation. The s…

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Symmetrical necrosis of the brain stem nuclei has been described as a consequence of severe transitory cerebral hypoxia mainly in neonates or young adults who experienced an episode of acute ischemia due to transitory acute heart failure. We report selective bilateral lesions of the solitary tract nuclei in 5 adults with short survival intervals after acute heart failure.
METHODS: In 5 patients who died due to cardiovascular pathology, histological examination was performed on multiple samples of cerebral hemispheres, on transverse sections of the midbrain and pons, an…

Quantification of human brain muscarinic cholinergic receptors was investigated with the use of [11C]N-methyl-4-piperidyl benzylate (NMPB) a … tes postinjection was highest in the striatum and cerebral cortex, intermediate in the thalamus and pons, and lowest in the cerebellum. After the development of a chromatographic system for isolation of authentic [11C]NMPB in plasma, tracer kinetic modeling was used to estimate receptor binding from the cerebral and arterial plasma tracer time-courses. …

Until recently, the inability to demonstrate neurovascular compression of the trigeminal nerve preoperatively resulted in surgery being offe … cal and MRTA findings. In the first of these cases, surgery revealed distortion of the nerve at the pons by a vein that MRTA had predicted to lie 6 mm remote from this point. In the second patient, venous compression was missed; however, this patient was investigated early in the series and did not have gadolinium-enhanced imaging. In nine cases, MRTA …

The aim of the present study was a refined analysis of neuroinflammation including TMEM119 as a useful microglia-specific marker in forensic assessments of traumatic causes of death, e.g., traumatic brain injury (TBI). Human brain tissue samples were obtained from autopsies and divided into cases with lethal TBI (n = 25) and subdivided into three groups according to their trauma survival time and compared with an age-, gender-, and postmortem interval-matched cohort of sudden cardiovascular fatalities as controls (n = 23). Brain tissue samples next to cortex contusions and surrounding white ma

Perimesencephalic nonaneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (PNSAH) is a benign form of subarachnoid hemorrhage and is usually not associated with any focal deficit. We describe two rare cases of PNSAH with unilateral third cranial nerve palsy. Both patients were treated conservatively. The outcomes of our two cases were excellent. The third cranial nerve palsy resolved gradually in both patients, suggesting that the prognosis for third cranial nerve palsy concomitant with PNSAH is favorable. Unilateral third cranial nerve palsy may occur as the first clinical manifestation of PNSAH.

For three decades since the fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) was first described, researchers have been keenly interested in understanding the mechanism(s) by which ethanol damages or disrupts development of the human fetal brain. It has been reported repeatedly that exposure of infant rats to ethanol causes a reduction in brain mass and loss of cerebellar Purkinje cells, but the mechanisms underlying these effects have remained elusive. In a recent series of studies, we have demonstrated that exposure of infant rats or mice to ethanol on a single occasion during the synaptogenesis period of devel

OBJECTIVE: To study the association between diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) characteristics and stroke etiology, stroke severity, and functional outcome in patients with infratentorial strokes.
METHODS: The authors prospectively studied 22 consecutive patients with acute infratentorial strokes. They used a blinded comparison of DWI features (number, distribution, and volume of lesions) with clinical characteristics, namely, stroke etiology (Trial of ORG 10172 in Acute Stroke Treatment [TOAST] classification), severity (NIH Stroke Scale [NIHSS]), length of stay (LOS), and functional 3-month o

PURPOSE: The usefulness of diffusion tensor magnetic resonance imaging (DT-MRI) is still in debate, and the development of clinically feasible scan protocol is encouraged. The purpose of this study was to investigate the afferent fiber system to the cerebellum in patients with phenytoin (PHT)-induced cerebellar atrophy in comparison with cerebellar atrophy of other etiologies by using DT-MRI.
METHODS: Thirteen patients (M/F ratio, 7:6; mean age, 42.5 years) and age-matched normal controls (n = 8) participated in this study. The patient group consisted of epilepsy patients who had received PHT

Postural instability was quantitatively studied in patients with lesions in the 1) pontine tegmentum, 2) deep cerebellar nuclei, or 3) cerebellar hemisphere. As compared to controls, patients with each lesion demonstrated a characteristic 3 Hertz (Hz) body oscillation. Cross-correlation functions revealed a strong correlation between the body sway and activities in the lower leg muscles. Based on these findings, we conclude that the 3 Hz body oscillation may be the result of any disturbance in the loop of long-latency reflexes mediated by the cerebellum.

Also, BNB+PCO displayed a higher curative effect against HC+HG-induced impairment of tissue regeneration than BNB or PCO alone. A notable effect of BNB+PCO was perceived in protecting kidneys, testis …

RESULTS: The CKD cases showed lower BMD T-Scores than healthy controls. Moreover, LS, DR, and FN BMDs were significantly different between CKD stages. Post hoc analyses …

MOG antibody-associated disease (MOGAD) is a new entity within the spectrum of autoimmune inflammatory diseases of the central nervous system. It is distinct from multiple sclerosis (MS) and neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD). Although they share certain clinical characteristics, these 3 diseases differ in terms of their pathophysiology, disease course and response to treatment. MOGAD is a rare disease affecting both adults and children, with a higher frequency in the latter. The clinical presentation of MOGAD varies depending on age: in children under the age of 10, presentations …

INTRODUCTION: Progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) is a four-repeat tauopathy characterized by multiple clinicopathologic subtypes. Advanced … brain iron content were higher in the globus pallidus and substantia nigra than in the midbrain and pons in each participant, regardless of group. CBVa values tended to be higher in the subcortical gray matter in PSP participants than in controls, although large measurement variability was noted in controls across multiple regions.
CONCLUSION: In vivo …
