Self-reported mechanical problems during condom use and semen exposure. Comparison of two randomized trials in the United States of America and Brazil.

OBJECTIVES/GOAL: To compare self-reported condom use problems and objectively determined semen exposure in 2 populations. STUDY DESIGN: Two randomized crossover trials in the United States and Brazil compared the failure rates of the female condom (FC) and male condom (MC). Participants used both condom types, completed condom-specific questionnaires to report problems, and collected precoital and postcoital samples of vaginal fluid. Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) was detected by immunoassay. RESULTS: Problems with condom use were reported less frequently in the Brazilian study (rate differ

The genetics of pathological gambling.

Problem and pathological gambling (PG) occurs in about 5% of Americans. Gambling is associated with substantial psychosocial and psychiatric health problems, and the increasing ease of access to gambling may increase its future prevalence. Therefore, it is important to gain greater insight into the causes of PG. Family studies of PG are consistent with a substantial familial impact on vulnerability to PG. However, family studies cannot distinguish genetic from family environmental influences. By contrast, the study of twin pairs permits the genetic and environmental influences on PG to be esti

Minority stress and the development of problem alcohol use among sexual minority youth: A scoping review synthesizing multidisciplinary mechanisms of risk.

Beginning in adolescence, lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) individuals exhibit higher levels of problem alcohol use relative to heterosexual populations. Based in minority stress theory, psychological mediation frameworks of LGB psychopathology typically serve as explanatory models of these disparities, suggesting that LGB identity-related stressors lead to social and affect-related mechanisms that proximally influence alcohol use disorder risk. While stress and its psychological consequences are considered universal risk factors, minority stress research has yet to be synthesized with theory

Violence in adulthood amplifies the health correlates of childhood maltreatment.

BACKGROUND: Although experiences of violence are detrimental and may occur throughout the lifespan, few studies have examined the long-term health correlates of violence in both childhood and adulthood. OBJECTIVE: To examine the association of exposure to child maltreatment (CM) as well as severe violence in adulthood with mental and physical health problems and health-related risk behaviors in adulthood. METHODS: The study was cross-sectional and applied a novel survey instrument among a random sample of 10 337 Swedish women and men aged 18-74. Logistic regression was applied to calculate o

Identification and comprehensive characterization of moral disapproval and behavioral dysregulation-based pornography-use profiles across 42 countries.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The Moral Incongruence Model of Pornography Use proposes that pornography-use-related problems may be present due to problematic pornography use (PPU) and/or moral disapproval (MD) of pornography use. Despite some supporting empirical evidence, no study has tested the presence of different pornography-use profiles based on individuals' behavioral dysregulation (i.e., PPU) and moral values concerning pornography use. The generalizability of previous findings to diverse populations has also been limited given the scarcity of studies conducted outside of Western countries. M

Longitudinal associations between response-style strategies and abnormal eating behaviors/attitudes in adolescents: a cross-lagged panel model.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have suggested that response-style strategies (rumination, problem-solving, and distraction) can be risk or protective factors for the development of abnormal eating behaviors/attitudes (AEB) during adolescence. However, due to limited empirical data regarding the prospective effects of these strategies on AEB, further research is needed to clarify their role in developing AEB in adolescence. METHODS: This study investigated the one-year lagged effects of response-style strategies on AEB in 24,883 fourth- to eighth-grade students in Japan between 2015 and 2019 usi

Five-year follow-up of the iBerry Study: screening in early adolescence to identify those at risk of psychopathology in emerging adulthood.

The iBerry Study, a Dutch population-based high-risk cohort (n = 1022) examines the transition from subclinical symptoms to psychiatric disorders in adolescents. Here, we present the first follow-up measurement, approximately 3 years after baseline assessment and 5 years after the screening based on self-reported emotional and behavioral problems (SDQ-Y). We give an update on the data collection, details on the (non)response, and the results on psychopathology outcomes. The first follow-up (2019-2022) had a response rate of 79% (n = 807). Our results at baseline (mean age 15.0 years) have show

Melatonin vs. dexmedetomidine for sleep induction in children before electroencephalography.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: In children requiring electroencephalography (EEG), sleep recording can provide crucial information. As EEG recordings during spontaneous sleep are not always possible, pharmacological sleep-inducing agents are sometimes required. The aim of the study was to evaluate safety and efficacy of melatonin (Mel) and dexmedetomidine (Dex; intranasal and sublingual application) for sleep induction prior to EEG. METHODS: In this prospective randomized study, 156 consecutive patients aged 1-19 years were enrolled and randomized by draw into melatonin group (Mel; n = 54; dose:

Using Schema Modes for Case Conceptualization in Schema Therapy: An Applied Clinical Approach.

This article is situated within the framework of schema therapy and offers a comprehensive and clinically useful list of schema modes that have been identified as being relevant to conceptualizing complex psychological problems, such as those posed by personality disorders, and, in particular, the way that those problems are perpetuated. Drawing on the schema therapy literature, as well as other literature including that of cognitive behavior therapy and metacognitive therapy, over eighty modes are identified altogether, categorized under the widely accepted broad headings of Healthy Adult, Ch

Atypical Functional Network Properties and Associated Dimensions of Child Psychopathology During Rest and Task Performance.

BACKGROUND: When brain networks deviate from typical development, this is thought to contribute to varying forms of psychopathology. However, research has been limited by the reliance on discrete diagnostic categories that overlook the potential for psychological comorbidity and the dimensional nature of symptoms. METHODS: This study examined the topology of functional networks in association with 4 bifactor-defined psychopathology dimensions-general psychopathology, internalizing symptoms, conduct problems, and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder symptoms-via the Child Behavior Checklis

Cannabinoids for behavioral symptoms in severe dementia: Safety and feasibility in a long-term pilot observational study in nineteen patients.

CONTEXT: The management of behavioral symptoms and rigidity in patients with dementia constitutes a significant challenge. Short-term studies suggest an interest in the use of medical cannabis, but long-term data are lacking. OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to investigate the feasibility and long-term safety of administering tetrahydrocannabinol/cannabidiol (THC/CBD) treatment as an additional drug to a poly medicated population with severe dementia, evaluate clinical improvements, and collect information on the pharmacokinetics of cannabinoids and possible drug-drug interactions.

Prevalence and Clinical Characteristics of Recreational and At-Risk/Problematic Gambling in a National Sample of U.S. Military Veterans.

Gambling among U.S. military veterans is common, with more extensive involvement linked to gambling disorder and associated problems. This study examined associations between recreational gambling (RG) and at-risk/problem gambling (ARPG), and clinical measures (psychiatric disorders, substance use), behaviors (suicidality, homelessness, arrests) and functioning in a nationally representative sample of U.S. military veterans. Data were analyzed from 4069 veterans who participated in the National Health and Resilience in Veterans Study. Chi-square tests, analyses of variance (ANOVAs) and logisti

Is the Hitchcock Story Really True? Public Opinion on Hooded Crows in Cities as Input to Management.

In recent years, the Hooded crow (Corvus cornix) has become one of the most successful wild bird species in urban environments across Europe. Hooded crows can cause several problems in cities, including trash scattering, noise disturbance, and aggressive behavior toward humans or pets, and they can be potential vectors of pathogens. To find effective solutions, the public has to be involved in the decision-making process in urban planning management, managed by the city administration. In this study, we surveyed the attitude of people in Hungary towards crows and crow management by collecting

µ-Opioid Receptors Expressed by Intrinsically Photosensitive Retinal Ganglion Cells Contribute to Morphine-Induced Behavioral Sensitization.

Opioid drugs are the most effective tools for treating moderate to severe pain. Despite their analgesic efficacy, long-term opioid use can lead to drug tolerance, addiction, and sleep/wake disturbances. While the link between opioids and sleep/wake problems is well-documented, the mechanism underlying opioid-related sleep/wake problems remains largely unresolved. Importantly, intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells (ipRGCs), the cells that transmit environmental light/dark information to the brain's sleep/circadian centers to regulate sleep/wake behavior, express μ-opioid receptors

A comparison of psychosocial adjustment among children of women who received behavioral couples therapy versus individually based therapy for substance use disorder.

BACKGROUND: Children of women with substance use disorder (SUD) exhibit elevated risk for psychosocial adjustment problems. However, little research has examined whether women's SUD treatment is beneficial for their children. In comparison to individually based therapy (IBT), behavioral couples therapy (BCT) is superior for reducing women's SUD problems and improving their intimate partner relationships. The current study sought to examine whether BCT is more efficacious than 12-step-oriented IBT for reducing psychosocial adjustment problems among the children of women with SUD. METHODS: The
