Complete absence of evening melatonin increase in tetraplegics.

Individuals with a spinal cord injury (SCI), especially with tetraplegia, experience poor sleep quality, and this may be related to impaired control of circadian rhythmicity. Here, we examined the evening onset of melatonin secretion, an important hormone for the initiation of sleep, in people with a complete cervical (tetraplegia) and thoracic (paraplegia) SCI, and age- and sex-matched able-bodied control participants. Multiple samples of salivary melatonin were obtained during the evening hours and analyzed by ELISA methods in 10 control partcipants, 9 individuals with paraplegia, and 6 indi

Sleep problems, chronotype, and diurnal preferences in children and adults with spina bifida.

Spina bifida meningomyelocele (SBM) is a neural tube defect that involves dysraphism of the spinal cord and extensive reorganization of the brain. The authors assessed the relationship between chronotype, diurnal preferences, and sleep problems in individuals with SBM and healthy controls. Although individuals with SBM showed the characteristic decelerating quadratic relationship between age and chronotype, the curve was displaced, peaking at a younger age in controls compared with SBM (23.4 vs. 29.2 years). Groups did not differ in morningness-eveningness preferences. Individuals with SBM end

Effects of body mass index on sleep patterns during pregnancy.

The purpose of this study was to profile sleep patterns during pregnancy according to body mass index (BMI) and to correlate labour outcomes with both BMI and hours sleep. Data were collected from 200 postpartum women detailing sleep characteristics before and during pregnancy. A validated sleep questionnaire was employed, which comprised of questions about sleep apnoea, snoring, subjective sleep quality, sleep latency, sleep duration, habitual sleep efficiency, sleep disturbances, use of sleeping medication and daytime dysfunction. Descriptive analyses were used. With advancing gestation, the

[Sleep and quality of life among rural elderly in Anhui province].

OBJECTIVE: The primary purposes of this article were to examine the distributions and correlation between conditions of sleep and the quality of life, so as to explore the risk factors of abnormal sleep among elderly in the rural areas of Anhui province. METHODS: Elderly who aged 60 years or more (n = 1680) were randomly selected from rural areas in Anhui province. Conditions of sleep and quality of life of the subjects were assessed independently, using the pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI) scale and SF-36 scale. A generalized logistic model analysis was performed, using sleep-related fa

Sleep enhances false memories depending on general memory performance.

Memory is subject to dynamic changes, sometimes giving rise to the formation of false memories due to biased processes of consolidation or retrieval. Sleep is known to benefit memory consolidation through an active reorganization of representations whereas acute sleep deprivation impairs retrieval functions. Here, we investigated whether sleep after learning and sleep deprivation at retrieval enhance the generation of false memories in a free recall test. According to the Deese, Roediger, McDermott (DRM) false memory paradigm, subjects learned lists of semantically associated words (e.g., "nig

Obesity and sleep disturbances: meaningful sub-typing of obesity.

Obesity, excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS), and self-reported short sleep duration appear to be on the rise, while there is evidence that obesity and these sleep disorders are strongly connected. In this paper, we review data that challenge the common belief that the sleep apnoea and sleep loss, frequently associated with obesity, are the primary determinants of obesity-related objective daytime sleepiness and subjective fatigue (tiredness without increased sleep propensity). Specifically, obesity is associated with objective and subjective EDS regardless of the presence of sleep apnoea. The

Behavioural aspects of children's sleep.

There is good empirical evidence that behavioural factors play a role in the onset/maintenance of many childhood sleeplessness problems and that behaviour therapy can be used as an effective form of management. There is a smaller, but growing, literature supporting the idea that behavioural interventions may also play a significant role in the management of other types of sleep disorder (eg, rhythmic movement disorders, arousal disorders, nightmares and circadian rhythm sleep disorders), and this is an area ripe with research possibilities. This review outlines the nature of behavioural aspect

Effects of modafinil on cognitive performance and alertness during sleep deprivation.

The performance- and alertness-sustaining/restoring effects of modafinil during sleep deprivation in normal, healthy adults were reviewed. Results indicate that modafinil is efficacious for sustaining/restoring objective performance and alertness during sleep deprivation with few adverse effects. At appropriate dosages, modafinil restores performance and alertness to non-sleep deprived levels. Modafinil also impairs post-sleep deprivation recovery sleep, but from the few studies available addressing this issue, it is unclear whether these sleep impairments translate into post-sleep performance

Sleep, the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, and cytokines: multiple interactions and disturbances in sleep disorders.

Sleep is an important component of mammalian homeostasis, vital for survival. Sleep disorders are common in the general population and are associated with significant medical, psychologic, and social disturbances. Sleep, in particular deep sleep, has an inhibitory influence on the HPA axis, whereas activation of the HPA axis or administration of glucocorticoids can lead to arousal and sleeplessness. Insomnia, the most common sleep disorder, is associated with a 24-hour increase of ACTH and cortisol secretion, consistent with a disorder of central nervous system hyperarousal. Sleepiness and fat

Resolution of sleep paralysis by weak electromagnetic fields in a patient with multiple sclerosis.

Sleep paralysis refers to episodes of inability to move during the onset of sleep or more commonly upon awakening. Patients often describe the sensation of struggling to move and may experience simultaneous frightening vivid hallucinations and dreams. Sleep paralysis and other manifestations of dissociated states of wakefulness and sleep, which reflect deficient monoaminergic regulation of neural modulators of REM sleep, have been reported in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS). A 40 year old woman with remitting-progressive multiple sclerosis (MS) experienced episodes of sleep paralysis sin

Scheduled naps in the management of daytime sleepiness in narcolepsy-cataplexy.

A repeated testing paradigm was used to assess the efficacy for the management of daytime sleepiness in narcolepsy-cataplexy of single long, multiple short and no-nap sleep/wake schedule conditions, with total sleep per 24 hours held constant. Eight narcoleptic subjects participated and followed each experimental schedule for two consecutive days, the second of which served as a test day during which simultaneous electroencephalogram (EEG) polygraphic recordings were made. Performance tests reported here include a grammatical transformation test and a four-choice reaction time test. A single l

[A case of three-year-old boy with periodic apnea during waking and sleep, severe psychomotor retardation and hypotonia].

We presented a 3-year-old boy, a product of consanguineous parents, with periodic apnea during waking and sleep states, severe psychomotor retardation and hypotonia. According to polysomnographical recordings, he exhibited frequent central apneas which decreased in frequency and regularity in the stage REM. He showed abnormal background EEG, undifferentiated sleep stage and very short duration of stage REM. The initiation of breathing after apnea was often accompanied with generalized muscles contraction like a startle response. In the waking state the apnea induced generalized muscular hypoto

Sleep problems in healthy preadolescents.

Few data currently exist concerning the sleep problems of preadolescents. A parent report questionnaire concerning sleep habits and problems was developed. The questionnaires were completed by the parents of 1000 unscreened elementary school children attending the third, fourth, and fifth grades. The schools were randomly selected from an urban area. Of the 1000 questionnaires, 972 were completed and could be used for statistical analysis. Among the parents, 24% reported sleeping poorly and 12% regularly relied on sedatives to induce sleep. Sleep difficulties lasting more than 6 months were pr

Nocturnal paroxysmal dystonia.

Sleep-related seizures characterised by choreoathetoid, dystonic and ballic movements occurred in 12 patients, repeatedly each night and over a period of years. The nocturnal attacks were short-lasting, responded well to carbamazepine and were sometimes associated with clearly or possibly epileptic seizures during night- or daytime. They resembled the paroxysmal kinesigenic dystonias of wakefulness. Similar dystonic-dyskinetic attacks, but of long duration and unresponsive to medication, were also observed in two other patients, in one 20 years before the onset of clinically apparent Huntingto

Lower respiratory rate during sleep in children with angelman syndrome compared to age-matched controls.

BACKGROUND: Angelman syndrome (AS) is a rare genetic neurodevelopmental disorder caused by the absence of a functional UBE3A gene, leading to developmental, behavioral, and medical challenges. Sleep disturbances, including sleep-disordered breathing, are common in AS. This study, for the first time, investigates nocturnal respiration in individuals with AS and healthy controls at home in a long term setting. METHODS: A non-invasive ballistocardiography-based (BCG) sleep monitoring device ("sleep mat") placed under the participants' mattresses, was used to remotely monitor children with AS age

Functional connectivity of thalamus in children with primary nocturnal enuresis: results from a resting-state fMRI study.

Primary nocturnal enuresis (PNE) is characterized by a low cure rate and a high reoccurrence rate, since its underlying mechanism remains unclear. Based on the recent studies that thalamus plays an important role in waking up a sleeping person, here we further investigate the functional connectivity (FC) information between thalamus and other brain regions, in order to make better understanding of the PNE's pathogenesis. In this study, we enrolled 30 children diagnosed with PNE and 30 typically developing children that are age and sex matched, the thalamus-based FC estimates were extracted at

Effects of circadian variation, lifestyle and environment on hematological parameters: A narrative review.

The complete blood count (CBC) is the most widely prescribed laboratory test. It plays a key role in screening, diagnosing, and monitoring a variety of medical disorders. Preanalytical and analytical variables are responsible for more than 50% of laboratory errors that may lead to spurious CBC results. The effects of blood sampling, transport, storage, and analytical errors on hematological parameters have been well described. Circadian variation and changes in lifestyle and environment can also affect blood cells. It has been extensively studied in the past, but highly variable methodology an

Focus on the pedunculopontine nucleus. Consensus review from the May 2018 brainstem society meeting in Washington, DC, USA.

The pedunculopontine nucleus (PPN) is located in the mesopontine tegmentum and is best delimited by a group of large cholinergic neurons adjacent to the decussation of the superior cerebellar peduncle. This part of the brain, populated by many other neuronal groups, is a crossroads for many important functions. Good evidence relates the PPN to control of reflex reactions, sleep-wake cycles, posture and gait. However, the precise role of the PPN in all these functions has been controversial and there still are uncertainties in the functional anatomy and physiology of the nucleus. It is difficul

Exposure to early adversity: Points of cross-species translation that can lead to improved understanding of depression.

The relationship between developmental exposure to adversity and affective disorders is reviewed. Adversity discussed herein includes physical and sexual abuse, neglect, or loss of a caregiver in humans. While these stressors can occur at any point during development, the unique temporal relationship to specific depressive symptoms was the focus of discussion. Further influences of stress exposure during sensitive periods can vary by gender and duration of abuse as well. Data from animal studies are presented to provide greater translational and causal understanding of how sensitive periods, d
