Two potential obstacles to the creation of implantable tissue engineered heart valves are inadequate mechanical properties (ability to withstand hemodynamic stresses) and adverse host-tissue reactions due to the presence of residual nondegraded polymer scaffold. The present study provides in vivo trials of poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA) as a porous biodegradable nerve conduit using a 10 mm sciatic nerve defect model in rats. PURPOSE: To determine the efficacy of using a scaffold of hydroxyapatite blocks within the maxillary sinus to treat patients with large orbital floor fractures and secondary vertical globe dystopia.

METHODS: Bioactive glass was used as obliteration material in a series of osteoplastic frontal sinus operations on 10 patients suffering from chronic frontal sinusitis, which other, more-conservative treatment modalities had failed to cure.

In our department, we studied 243 patients who underwent open or close tympanoplasty, from 1984 to 1989, generally caused by cholesteatoma (229 cases) or by non-cholesteatomatous chronic suppurative otitis media (14 cases). The biocompatibility of heparin surface modified poly(methyl methacrylate) intraocular lenses (IOLs) was evaluated in two experiments following implantation in the anterior and posterior eye chambers of adult cynomolgus monkeys. A significant portion of the population suffer from diabetic foot ulcers. While conservative treatment is often successful, many diabetic patients with accompanying peripheral vascular disease and neuropathy are under constant medical care for chronic, recurring foot ulcers. A new injectable biomaterial, Keragen Implant, was evaluated on two patients with bilateral diabetic ulcers. The implanted lesions healed completely during the months following treatment. Control lesions treated by conventional means remained open and ulcerated.

Medial orbital wall fenestrations were created bilaterally in 16 adult cats. The fenestrations were reconstructed with polyglactin 910 film, Dacron-reinforced silicone sheeting, or no implant.
